Who Were “Volodko” and “Bilyi”? About the Alleged Existence of Ukrainian Insurgent Army in Wrocław Province in 1947–1951

Both in quasi-historian literature and in serious historiography one can find statements that in Poland after 1948 structures of Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) and Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) existed. To support this thesis authors bring information about activities of so called “Zenon’s” net and of “partisan groups” in provinces of Olsztyn and Włocław. In “Zenon” case, despite the complexity of the problem, in the light of researches led by i.e. I. Hałagida, it is clear, that that was a provocative structure, organised and controlled by Ministry of Public Security (MBP). As far as the case of partisan groups in Olsztyn province, is concerned, their activities did not go beyond 1948. In the current article the author tries to determine what can one call activities of “Volodko” and “Bilyj” in Wrocław province. Was it a temporary organised group which aimed at transferring ex-members of UPA abroad, or it was, just like C-1 operation, a provocation of MBP to work out the environments of OUN and UPA, or else – was it an ideological or criminal organisation? The material posessed authenticated the statement, that “Volodko” group was not UPA “sensu stricto” or any kind of armed formation. It can be treated as a germ of civil underground structure at most. The least probable seems to be a hypothesis about the criminal nature of the group, although it accepted some people of very poor reputation. MBP posessed some information about the group, thanks to “Skała” agent among others, nevertheless, according to all possible data, “Volodko” was an agent of local activities aiming to open a transfer channel for exmembers of UPA, ordered by a rival of Bandera fraction of OUN – the Foreign Representation of Ukrainian Main Liberation Committee (ZP UHWR). The subject of the analysis was also determination of the real sequence of events happening because of “Volodko’s” “organisation” existence. It is known, that at least one transfer abroad of the ex-member of UPA was accomplished (Bogdan Stańko). It was confi rmed that the turning point in the activities of the group were events of October 1949, when “Volodko” was murdered by Jan Kret with pistol shot in the head. Previously unknown threads of Jakub Hirnyj arrest were reconstructed. It was also found out that in connection to “Volodko” case in the period between September 1950 to May 1959 seventeen people got sentences ranging from one year imprisonment to the capital punishment. Authenticity of “Volodko’s” real name, which had “a priori” been accepted to be Włodzimierz Karasiewicz, was questioned. A very probable hypothesis was taken, that “Volodko”, asa “Wujek” was really called Dymitr Tychanicz. The article presents also some information on further lot of main characters connected with the “Volodko’s” case

The Rossmann fold of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) is a nuclear docking site for antisense oligonucleotides containing a TAAAT motif

The subcellular localisation of oligodeoxynucleotides (ODN) is a major limitation for their use against nuclear targets. In this study we demonstrate that an antisense ODN directed against cytosolic phospholipase A(2) (cPLA2) mRNA is efficiently taken up and accumulates in the nuclei of endothelial cells (HUVEC), human monocytes and HeLa cells. Gel shift experiments and incubation of cells with oligonucleotide derivatives show that the anti-cPLA2 oligo binds a 37 kDa protein in nuclear extracts. The TAAAT sequence was identified as the major binding motif for the nuclear protein in competition experiments with mutated ODNs. Modification of the AAA tripler resulted in an ODN which failed to localise in the nucleus. Moreover, inserting a TAAAT motif into an ODN localising in the cytosol did not modify its localisation. The 37 kDa protein was purified and identified after peptide sequencing as glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH). It was shown by confocal microscopy that GAPDH co-localises with anti-cPLA2 ODN in the nucleus and commercial GAPDH effectively binds the oligo. Competition experiments with increasing concentration of NAD(+) co-factor indicate that the GAPDH Rossmann fold is a docking site for antisense oligonucleotides containing a TAAAT motif. Intrapersonal factors of adolescents self-harming behaviour.

Researches often differentiate two groups of self-harming adolescents: those who attempters a suicide, and those who are harming themselves in a non-suicidal way, and they don‘t seek the death. However just a few community-based research, which would directly compare these groups, were done so far, and therefore information about the differences of the psychological peculiarity and self-harming behavior‘s internal factors between the groups is ambivalent. Lifestyle and Coping Skills Questionnaire (Hawton, 2006), adapted and adjusted for the research of adolescents self-harming behavior by A. Laskytė and N. Žemaitienė in 2006, was used in this work. A part of their collected data is also used in this work. The aim: to examine the intrapersonal factors of suicidal and non-suicidal self-harm in a community sample population: the motives, suicidal intentions, the peculiarities of harming self-harm and person‘s psychological traits that could be possibly related to those factors. It also aimed to reveal the typical differences of these factors between the genders. The sample: 15-17 year old Lithuanian pupils who, while answering into Lifestyle and Coping Skills Questionnaire, responded that they were harming themselves at least once in a life time. In the questionnaire while explaining the reasons of self-harming behavior, into the proposition “I wanted to die” they could write “Yes” or “No”- in this way they were separated into two groups: suicidal self-harmers – who wanted to die (n=163) and non-suicidal self-harmers - who didn’t want to die (n=118). Results: more girls than boys were seeking death while harming themselves. The motives of those adolescents who wanted to die and those who didn’t want to die weren’t significantly different. Adolescents of both groups most often were harming themselves in order to show hoe desperate they were feeling or to get relief from a terrible state of mind. Regardless the wish to die, girls and boys were harming themselves with medicine or other substance most often. However the boys who wanted to die same often were using several methods at the same time, and those who didn’t want to die – same often were cutting themselves or harming themselves in another external way. The longer duration of planning and the frequency of deliberate self-harm were significantly related to the wish to die, as it was named, however this relation was of different intensity in the girls’ and boy’s groups. Those who wanted to die, could be characterized as those who have the higher level of depressiveness and anxiety, and lower self-esteem. Conclusions: we noticed significant differences between the psychological and behavioral peculiarities of self-harming adolescents who wanted or who didn’t want to die, and specialists who are working with adolescents should necessarily consider them. However girls’ and boys’ groups also significantly differ, therefore even if we knew whether the teenager wanted to die, while analyzing the motives of self- harming behavior we should consider the specificities of the gender
