Variation of structural and functional metrics in macrophyte communities within two habitats of eastern Mediterranean coastal lagoons: natural versus human effects
1. The variation of structural (multi-dimensional scaling plot of Bray–Curtis similarity, species number, Shannon–Weaver index, percentage coverage) and functional (Ecological State Group (ESG) I percentage coverage, ESG II percentage coverage, Ecological Evaluation Index (EEI)) metrics in benthic macrophyte communities was studied in two different habitats: (a) mud with submerged angiosperms (MA), and (b) mud with macroalgae (MM), in three eastern Mediterranean coastal lagoons. One lagoon was in northern Greece (Agiasma, Nestos Delta, Eastern Macedonia region) and two in south-eastern Italy (Cesine and Margherita of Savoia, Apulian region).
2. The aim was to differentiate metric variation caused by human or natural processes and thereby to (1) select reliable metrics and (2) develop user-friendly protocols for cost-effective monitoring programmes for coastal lagoon water quality.
3. Eight different sites dominated by macrophyte communities characterized by two angiosperms (Ruppia cirrhosa and R. maritima), two opportunistic macroalgae (Ulva sp. and Chaetomorpha linum), and Cyanobacteria colonies were quantitatively and destructively sampled twice.
4. Structural metrics showed highest heterogeneity at a local site-specific scale, while functional metrics showed highest heterogeneity at the scale of habitat. As a result the structural metrics appeared inappropriate as indicators of lagoon water quality changes. By contrast shifts of habitat dominated by angiosperms to opportunistic macroalgae owing to nutrient excess, especially nitrogen, can be identified by functional metrics, especially with EEI

Coastal zones between anvil and hammer: a glance to the future
Coastal systems, from both the environmental and social standpoint, are complex systems that respond to inputs arising from spatial and temporal scales larger than those outlined by their local boundaries. The impact of human activities is not expected to decrease in the future and the globalization of "driving factors" poses serious questions about the solution of the prob-lems of coastal zones. The thoughts that are proposed concern only some of the pressing is-sues that must be addressed: the complexity of the systems must be dealt with by widening the spatial and temporal scales of investigation, considering the delays of systems in respond-ing to past and present inputs, and by building together hypothesis of adaptive management with long-view. In particular, we address issues concerning current methodological approaches used in the hydrogeology of the coastal areas, the promising adaptive management, the retoxi-fication by heavy metal at the land-sea interface and the possible comebacks of coastal groundwater to climate change and anthropogenic pressure in terms of "critical transitions "
Predicting Aquifer Recharge Trends From Local Scale Numerical Scenarios
Climate changes are supposed to greatly affect soil water content (SWC) and soil temperature, which in turn drive the recharge toward the aquifers. The aim of this study is to estimate future trends of recharge in a silty loamy agricultural soil located in the Po river lowland, using a variably saturated finite elements model. The model was calibrated and validated using SWC and matric potential at different depths from 2008 to 2012. The validated model ran using the predicted evapotranspiration and precipitation for the year 2050 following the IPCC A1B scenario. The forecasted input data derive from the downscaled model PROTHEUS that use ECHAM5/MPI-OM as global driver and using a basin Multi Global Model Ensemble (MGME) prediction for the Mediterranean area. The estimated changes in recharge are not significant for this area, since the forecasted input data do not change dramatically from the actual dataset. Although, linking the evapotranspiration only to the projected temperature increase leaded to a reduced recharge of approximately 30%. The conjunctive use of small scale validated models with downscaled results from global drivers could be an effective tool to manage the climate changes at the local scale
