Beyond the Power of Networks: Differentiating Network Structure from Social Media Affordances for Perceived Social Support

    No full text
Existing research suggests that social media use is associated with higher levels of social capital – the resources contained within a person’s network of friends, family, and other acquaintances. However, in predicting access to these resources, it has been impossible to distinguish the affordances of social media from the underlying advantage of maintaining a favorable social network of relationships on- and offline. Based on data from a representative, national survey, we compare the relationship between social network structure and various activities on Facebook for one type of resource: informal support in the form of companionship, emotional support, and tangible aid. In addition to a positive association between number of close ties, overall network size and diversity and support, we find that Facebook status updates and private messaging are independently associated with perceived support. We argue that these affordances are an outcome of the “pervasive awareness” provided by social media.Peer reviewe

Digital Media and Stress: The Cost of Caring 2.0

    No full text
This research explores the relationship between the use of digital media and stress. Based on the findings of a national, probability sample of adults in the United States, the use of digital media was not directly associated with higher levels of psychological stress. Some uses of digital media were associated with lower levels of perceived stress for women but not for men. However, the evidence suggests that, for men and women, digital media provides heightened awareness of network life events (AoNLE) in the lives of both close and more distant acquaintances. An awareness of undesirable, major life events in the lives of others can be a source of psychological stress; this is the cost of caring. Thus, the link between digital media and stress is indirect. We argue that the growth of digital media is related to changes in the structure of peoples’ personal communities that contribute to this trend. There has been a shift toward networks that offer persistent contact and pervasive awareness. Findings suggest that different mobile technologies, Internet technologies, and social media afford AoNLE for men and women, but women tend to report greater psychological stress than men, and they experience psychological stress from a wider range of AoNLE. We discuss explanations for the negative relationship between technology use and stress for women, as well as the implications of our findings for research on the use of digital media and psychological well-being, such as the relationship to social support, narcissism and empathy.Peer reviewe

Lu-H-N phase diagram from first-principles calculations

    No full text
Using a comprehensive structure search and high-throughput first-principles calculations of 1483 compounds, this study presents the phase diagram of Lu-H-N. The formation energy landscape of Lu-H-N was derived and utilized to assess the thermodynamic stability of compounds. Results indicate that there are no stable Lu-H-N ternary structures in this system, but metastable ternary structures, such as Lu20H2N17 (C2/m), Lu2H2N (P3-m1), were observed with small Ehull (< 100 meV/atom). Moreover, applying hydrostatic pressure up to 10 GPa causes the energy convex hull of the Lu-H-N to shift its shape and stabilizes binary phases such as LuN9 and Lu10H21. Additionally, interstitial empty sites in LuH2 were noted, which may explain the formation of Lu10H21 and LuH3-xNy. To provide a basis for comparison, X-ray diffraction patterns and electronic structures of some compounds are also presented

Recognized as modern China’s preeminent man of letters, Lu Xun (1881–1936) is revered as the nation’s conscience, a writer comparable to Shakespeare or Tolstoy. Gloria Davies’s portrait now gives readers a better sense of this influential author by situating the man Mao Zedong hailed as "the sage of modern China" in his turbulent time and place. In Davies’s vivid rendering, we encounter a writer passionately engaged with the heady arguments and intrigues of a country on the eve of revolution. She traces political tensions in Lu Xun’s works which reflect the larger conflict in modern Chinese thought between egalitarian and authoritarian impulses. During the last phase of Lu Xun’s career, the so-called "years on the left," we see how fiercely he defended a literature in which the people would speak for themselves, and we come to understand why Lu Xun continues to inspire the debates shaping China today. Although Lu Xun was never a Communist, his legacy was fully enlisted to support the Party in the decades following his death. Far from the apologist of political violence portrayed by Maoist interpreters, however, Lu Xun emerges here as an energetic opponent of despotism, a humanist for whom empathy, not ideological zeal, was the key to achieving revolutionary ends. Limned with precision and insight, Lu Xun’s Revolution is a major contribution to the ongoing reappraisal of this foundational figure.Recognized as modern China’s preeminent man of letters, Lu Xun (1881–1936) is revered as the nation’s conscience, a writer comparable to Shakespeare or Tolstoy. Ekonomista N. Kohanovska kolekcija - lielākais pēckara gadu dāvinājums LU Bibliotēkai

    No full text

Lu Xun zaoqi wenyan lunwen li suo tansuo de xin wenhua (The 'New Culture' formulated in Lu Xun's early classical-style essays)

    No full text
This article links a number of the main themes expressed in Lu Xun's early wenyan essays, written in Japan in 1906-1908, with the concerns of the New Culture Movement, which emerged later (circa 1919) in China. The author argues that these book-length theses written in dense classical language were in fact intellectual precursors to the New Culture Movement and its aftermath. It delineates a partial outcome of the author's Australian Research Council (ARC) project on the early Lu Xun and his formative period in Japan
