    Specification Testing in Nonlinear Time Series with Long-Range Dependence

    This paper proposes a model specification testing procedure for parametric specification of the conditional mean function in a nonlinear time series model with long–range dependence. An asymptotically normal test is established even when long–range dependence is involved.     Characterization for high dynamic range imaging

    In this paper we present a new practical camera characterization technique to improve color accuracy in high dynamic range (HDR) imaging. Camera characterization refers to the process of mapping device-dependent signals, such as digital camera RAW images, into a well-defined color space. This is a well-understood process for low dynamic range (LDR) imaging and is part of most digital cameras — usually mapping from the raw camera signal to the sRGB or Adobe RGB color space. This paper presents an efficient and accurate characterization method for high dynamic range imaging that extends previous methods originally designed for LDR imaging. We demonstrate that our characterization method is very accurate even in unknown illumination conditions, effectively turning a digital camera into a measurement device that measures physically accurate radiance values — both in terms of luminance and color — rivaling more expensive measurement instruments

    On April 12, 2022 poet Melissa Range read from her work at Winona State University as part of WSU’s John S. Lucas Great River Reading Series. Melissa Range was born and raised in East Tennessee. She received a BA from the University of Tennessee–Knoxville in 1995, an MFA from Old Dominion University in 1998, and an MTS from Emory University in 2005. She is the author of Scriptorium (Beacon Press, 2016), selected for the National Poetry Series by Tracy K. Smith, and Horse and Rider (Texas Tech University Press, 2010). Of Scriptorium, poet Tracy K. Smith writes: What may likely strike you on the first read is Range’s remarkable facility with form. She moves nimbly, naturally, with comfort and acrobatic delight through the rigors of sonnets, villanelles, anagrams, cento and the like. She submits joyfully to the whims of rhyme, allowing music to exert its will upon her train of mind, and she does so with such virtuosic ease that you may not even detect it on a first read. But what you will feel more than any of this, I am certain, is an urgent usefulness. These are poems for which form is not an end in itself.     Living with fire: protecting communities and restoring forests: findings and recommendations of the Front Range Fuels Treatment Partnership Roundtable

    May-06.The Front Range Fuels Treatment Partnership Roundtable has worked together since 2004 to develop a long-term vision and roadmap for protecting communities from the risks of wildfire and restoring forest health in 10 Colorado Front Range counties (Boulder, Clear Creek, Douglas, El Paso, Gilpin, Grand, Jefferson, Larimer, Park and Teller). The results of the Roundtable's work show that the challenges posed by Front Range forests are significant. The Roundtable identified approximately 1.5 million forested acres along the Front Range that require treatment to protect communities or restore forest health, which the Roundtable refers to as fire risk mitigation and ecological restoration. At current treatment costs, achieving these goals could cost approximately 15millionannuallyovera40yearperiod,asumthatvastlyexceedstheapproximately15 million annually over a 40-year period, a sum that vastly exceeds the approximately 6 million currently available each year for forest treatments. This challenge falls on individual landowners as well as governmental land managers because a significant portion of acres that need treatment are on private land. While the challenge is daunting, the combined goals of reducing fire risk and restoring Front Range forests to good health are achievable. Success depends on leadership and action by federal, state, and local governments, as well as the proactive involvement of Front Range communities. The Roundtable has formulated a specific set of initiatives designed to provide additional resources for forest treatments, reduce treatment costs, drive local leadership and planning, and establish common priorities for forest treatments. Roundtable members will continue to work with federal, state, and local decision-makers to advance these initiatives and help catalyze the changes needed to protect and restore Colorado's forests. This report is a product of the Front Range Fuels Treatment Partnership Roundtable, a coalition of individuals from state and federal agencies, local governments, environmental and conservation organizations, the academic and scientific communities, and industry and user groups—all with a commitment to forest health and fire risk mitigation along Colorado's Front Range

    Range Unit Root (RUR) Tests: Robust against Nonlinearities, Error Distributions, Structural Breaks and Outliers

    Since the seminal paper by Dickey and Fuller in 1979, unit-root tests have conditioned the standard approaches to analysing time series with strong serial dependence in mean behaviour, the focus being placed on the detection of eventual unit roots in an autoregressive model fitted to the series. In this paper, we propose a completely different method to test for the type of long-wave patterns observed not only in unit-root time series but also in series following more complex data-generating mechanisms. To this end, our testing device analyses the unit-root persistence exhibited by the data while imposing very few constraints on the generating mechanism. We call our device the range unit-root (RUR) test since it is constructed from the running ranges of the series from which we derive its limit distribution. These nonparametric statistics endow the test with a number of desirable properties, the invariance to monotonic transformations of the series and the robustness to the presence of important parameter shifts. Moreover, the RUR test outperforms the power of standard unit-root tests on near-unit-root stationary time series; it is invariant with respect to the innovations distribution and asymptotically immune to noise. An extension of the RUR test, called the forward?backward range unit-root (FB-RUR) improves the check in the presence of additive outliers. Finally, we illustrate the performances of both range tests and their discrepancies with the Dickey?Fuller unit-root test on exchange rate series.Publicad
