Pakistan’s Agricultural Development since Independence: Intertemporal Trends and Explanations

No full text
The main objective of this paper has been to review Pakistan’s historical experience in agricultural development in terms of growth, income distribution, and rural poverty. While the long-term growth rates between 1949-50 and 1994-95 were satisfactory, the variations around the average have been rather too large over the various decades. Beginning with a stagnating sector of the 1950s, agriculture witnessed record growth rates during the Sixties. This was followed by the lowest growth rates of the early Seventies, and acceleration in the second half of the Seventies. The experience since 1979-80 has been mixed, but the growth rates have been rather low through the Eighties and the Nineties. The trends in income distribution and poverty varied directly in relation to the agricultural growth rates, especially when they were in excess of the threshold level of 4.5–5.0 percent per annum. In general, a growth rate of 5.0 percent or higher has induced positive changes in income distribution and poverty. In view of this positive association, the pursuit of a high growth policy in agriculture should guide Pakistan’s future development strategy. The efficiency of resource use, a greater dependence on modern technologies, and a minimisation of government intervention in the market mechanism are the essential pillars of the high growth strategy.

Ghulam Bagh is an important novel created in the Post-Colonial period in which Mirza Athar Baig has presented the intellectual and mental attitudes of this era.We can say that Post-Colonial literature refers to the literary texts that are created in the former colonies of Europe. In these writings, the background of Post-Colonialism and the background of Colonialism are presented in a literary Perspective. Post-Colonial literature shows an attempt to understand, examine and describe the feelings and experiences of those belonging to the former colonies. Mirza Athar Baig\u27s novel Ghulam Bagh was published in 2006 and six editions have been published so far. Ghulam Bagh is a masterpiece novel of fictional literature created in the former British colonial Pakistan, There are also characters living in the Post-Colonial era. Each character shows change, evolution and conflict. Ghulam Bagh is an imaginary place in terms of archeology. If we examine the title of the novel in a broader context, Ghulam Bagh is a metaphor for the desire of western nations to dominate the inferior, weak and noble races of the world. Is based on desire. In this paper, the novel will be studied in the Post-Colonial context to find out how far the author has succeeded in recovering the Colonial discourse. &nbsp

Evaluation of dominant allelopathic weed through examining the allelopathic effects of four weeds on germination and seedling growth of six crops

Leaf aqueous extracts were used to examine the allelopathic effects of Melilotus indica, Medicago polymorpha, Elusine indica and Fumaria indica at four concentrations (10, 20, 30 and 40% W/V) on germination percentage, radicle and hypocotyl growth of six crops, namely Triticum aestivum, Hordeum vulgare, Medicago sativa, Trifolium spp., Raphanus sativus and Trigonella foenum-graecum. All weed extracts showed pronounced inhibitory effect on germination and seedling growth of tested crops, however inhibition was not consistent over studied parameters. Weeds exerted different allelopathic effects on test crops. Fumaria indica exhibited a significant negative effect on germination of all tested species at 20, 30 and 40% aqueous extracts, followed by Elusine indica and Medicago polymorpha, and Melilotus indica at 10% concentration level. Melilotus indica halted the hypocotyl growth of tested crops at 10 and 20% aqueous extracts, followed by F. indica at 30 and 40% dosage. Radicle growth of all recipient species was also stunted under the aqueous extract of M. indica at 20, 30 and 40%, followed by Medicago polymorpha except 10% concentration. Elusine indica showed negative effects on hypocotyl growth at higher concentrations as compared to Medicago polymorpha, whereas radicle growth was not affected under different aqueous extracts of E. indica. Leaf debris method was used in greenhouse to further authenticate the allelopathic effects of dominant allelopathic weed viz., Melilotus indica at four concentrations (0, 25, 50 and 75 g per 300 g of soil) on germination percentage, shoot and root length of four crops, namely Medicago sativa, Trifolium spp., Hordeum vulgare and Triticum aestivum. Powdered leaf debris of M. indica mixed with clay loam soil appeared to have strong allelopathic inhibition under higher concentrations on germination and shoot growth of Medicago sativa and Trifolium spp. as compared to Hordeum vulgare and Triticum aestivum, whereas inhibitory effects were more pronounced on Trifolium spp. and Triticum aestivum, in terms of their root length. Hence, M. indica proved a strong allelopathic weed that should be removed from field to avoid harmful effects during early growth stages of tested crops. Moreover, it is recommended that all these species be phytochemically examined for their allelopathic potential and possible development of environmental safe bio-herbicides to control weeds

The Sheikh Ghulam Mustafa Al Qasimi was one of the great scholars of the twentieth century, and he received knowledge from the great scholars of Sindh, and among the great sheikhs of India affiliated in their thought to Imam Shah Wali Allah Al-Dahlawy. And so on, as it appears from his many books, then Sheikh Al Qasimi has well-known services to the Shah Wali Allah Academy, to government departments and others, in terms of member, director, etc. Then Sheikh Al Qasimi preferred to supervise many of these - Ph.D. and Master of Honor when he was an assistant professor in the Department of Sindhi Culture Islamic Sciences, and Comparing Religions at the University of Sindh Jamshoro, which number more than a hundred and are written in Arabic, Persian, Urdu and Sindhi. The list has been mentioned for some of the titles of PhD theses in the thesis, and this indicates that he was not an individual but rather a party.Sheikh Al Qasimi has left scientific traces in various religious sciences such as translating the meanings of the Qur’an into the Sindhi language, history, jurisprudence and its origins, the Sindhi language, interpretation, hadith, hadith sciences, the Prophet’s biography, literature, Islamic philosophy and others, and his writings are more than forty. Serving the Holy Book from the point of view of teaching, teaching, and from the point of view of authorship, investigation, arrangement and other of his books on interpretation: Interpretation of Surat Saba (The Revolutionary Interpretation - The Predominance of Religion Over All Religions - in the New Color of the Holy Qur’an) which is a valuable interpretation, and the translation of the interpretation of Ilham al-Rahman into the Sindhi language ( The first part) and others, then Sheikh Al-Qasimi wrote the footnotes to the book Ilham Al-Rahman in the interpretation of the Noble Quran, and it includes useful comment
