Una nuova procedura per le correzioni atmosferiche: applicazione sulla Solfatara di Pozzuoli

    No full text

The article describes the processes of adapting an economics or financial text during translating for publication in another language. Strategies for adaptation are identified, then classified and illustrated with examples taken from university textbooks and journal articles

Seeing scientists' voices: Towards a 'grammar' of scientific translation?

    No full text
This paper seeks to illustrate how Halliday’s analysis of the language of science as a syndrome of features can be used to develop a “grammar” of scientific translation. While systemic-functional grammar has been frequently used for the purposes of translating in general, Halliday’s work on the language of science is mainly referred to in the description of special languages, but is not applied consistently in scientific translation. First, Halliday’s contribution to the discussion of issues in translation and the language of science will be outlined against the backdrop of current studies in both areas. Second, it will be argued that Halliday’s syndrome of features in the language of science proposes a dynamic model of interrelated characteristics that can provide a holistic approach to the problems of scientific translation. Third, these features will be described and illustrated through a series of examples taken from a corpus of nuclear/particle physics. A dynamic grammar of the language of science can thus be fruitfully employed together with other frameworks of analysis to provide a holistic view of problems in the translation of science

Procedura con interfaccia-utente grafica per le correzioni atmosferiche di immagini satellitari

In this paper is shown a software procedure built to apply orographic and atmospheric correction to remote sensing images acquired in the visible-near infrared electromagnetic spectral region. The required atmospheric correction terms are computed, on pixel-by-pixel basis, using the 6S and MODTRAN radiative transfer models. In order to make this procedure user friendly it has been provided with a graphic user interface that guides the user throughout the setting and running steps of the elaborations. Both the procedure and the interface have been developed in the ENVI/IDL environment, in order to take advantage of the tools given by this software for remote sensing images processing

A foot in both camps: Redressing the balance between the 'pure' and applied branches of translation studies

    No full text
The aim of this article is to argue for an approach to translation research integrating/bridging the divide between the descriptive, theoretical and applied branches of Translation Studies (TS). Based on a perspective of translation as cross-cultural communication centred on language and as a professional activity where the translator makes decisions, the branch of Applied Translation Studies (ATS) is seen not just as an “extension” of the “pure” branches of TS (Theory and Description), or one where theoretical statements based on the results of descriptive studies are transmitted in a unidirectional way (Toury 1995: 17-19). Rather, the applied strand of TS covering translation teaching and practice, translation quality assessment, the development of translation aids etc. is effectively incorporated in the disciplinary core of TS, providing a site for testing theoretical statements, identifying problems and providing explanations to be fed into the theory

Not just an extension: Reinstating the applied branch within Translation Studies

Based on a perspective of translation as cross-cultural communication centred on language and as a professional decision-making activity where the translator has to make decisions, in this article we argue for an approach to translation research linking up the descriptive, theoretical and applied branches of Translation Studies (TS). We suggest that the various sub-branches of Applied Translation Studies – pertaining to the professional and more practical aspects of translation (translator training, translation quality assessment, translation aids etc.) – are to be included in the disciplinary core of TS, providing both a benchmark for theoretical statements, and a breeding ground to identify problems and the appropriate solutions as well as explanations to be fed into the theory

    I tecnicismi collaterali

Nell'articolo vengono presentati e discussi vari modelli teorici di descrizione dei tecnicismi collaterali, indicando le possibilità sia di distinguerli da modi di dire, espressioni idiomatiche ecc. della lingua comune (difficioltà, questa, sentita dai traduttori), sia di registrarli nelle banche dati terminografiche plurilingui (con notevole vantaggio per i traduttori)

Una nuova procedura per le correzioni atmosferiche: applicazione sulla Solfatara di Pozzuoli.

This paper describes CIRILLO, a new software for the correction of spaceborne images acquired in the VIS-SWIR spectral range. Moreover the capability to retrieve minerals composing the Solfatara di Pozzuoli surface using ASTER multispectral data is shown. In order to identify the mineralogical composition of the collected sample, mineralogy analysis (X-ray fluorescence and X-ray diffratometry) have been done. The reflectance spectra of the collected sample, obtained using a FieldSpec Pro spectrometer (INAF-LASF) has been compared with measurements performed directly on the Solftara di Pozzuoli using a portable ASD-Fieldspec spectrometer.Published77-861.10.
