    No full text
Expansion of Internet and creation of online media have offered more opportunities for freedom of expression, civil journalism and democracy in general, however, the extended freedom has raised new concerns, related to ethics above all, where the most pressing are associated to hate speech, inaccuracy of information, inappropriate language in online media, etc. Whatsoever, it must be emphasized that evolution of technology is not the main and only factor generating problematic issues related to ethics, especially in online media. There are other factors, too. Bearing in mind that content of online media is created by a whole variety of categories of individuals – not necessarily journalists – consequently raises dilemmas about professional ethics which, as mentioned above, are intensely expressed in online media. Such an element and consistent concerns related to reporting, journalism standards in online media and professional ethics were the main reasons to focus on this topic, which addresses the dilemma on whether we need to create new reporting standards for online journalism

The rapid technological development has caused many foundations in various areas of social life to shake. Even the journalism was no exception. Many world-famous newspapers broke their press releases by focusing more on their online versions. Like in other parts of the world, Kosovo has also had the same fate. An example of this is “Gazeta Express, “Tribuna” and so on, going from the printed platform to the electronic one. With the emergence of numerous portals in Kosovo, the idea came from a group of professional editors and journalists to have a professional and ethical self-regulation. Self-regulation essential role is to protect the media from political censorship, economic dependence, and super-expensive affairs in court. This topic focuses on the role of the Kosovo Press Council Code, how the applicable provisions are applied and respected

Online journalism not only today and now, as well as in the future, professional challenges, ethical, technical challenges and also time challenges. Online journalism has democratized and advanced the media in general, made it easier to obtain information, made it faster to publish information, faster access to read news, and so on. However, Online Journalism has also caused an earthquake in doing daily journalism, deriving lots of amateur mistakes. So the more accessible and practical the internet journalism is, It has become more dangerous for the public and with various, unethical and unprofessional blows. However, the main challenge of Online Journalism remains the verification of information, which should have been the main criteria, before portals publish anything and post on their websites. Failure to verify information brings many consequences, since we automatically enter the media range that publish false news that in media services are creating such a big mess. Accuracy and verification of information are the basis of good journalism, without excluding the practice of strong ethical principles. Among the challenges of online journalism is the battle against fake news, known globally as Fake News . Fake news, usually appear just before the events of great interest or in the verge of happening. That is, because the media use the curiosity of the mass for making different benefits Most of all, the victims of fake news are uninformed citizens, usually of low education, with lack of social, psychological and economic stability

The history of COVID-19 has profoundly affected both, professional and personal aspect of journalists - from psychological trauma and refined investigations, to health risks for their families. When COVID-19 began to spread rapidly, journalists of all sectors didn’t find it easy to report from the field, nor they had easy access to certain areas. All this psychological terror unavoidably resulted with consequences and negative effects in daily reporting routines, particularly to online reporting. Reporting for online media seemed a bit easier at first sight, however it was not easy at all to present the findings to the public. There were many slipups, unethical reporting, violation of privacy, pretentious headlines, just as largely unconfirmed information, presentation of statements by people who had no clues about the virus and pandemics. Keeping it short, we confronted a chaotic situation on the ground. Despite this situation, the media are supposed to support a proper and professional reporting. Of course, for most of the journalists reporting about pandemic was not their strength, however as time passed they became more sensitive and more motivated to improve and catch up with the new dynamics. Referring to my experience and the expertise of media professionals, in such and similar situations there should be a planning - an agenda to keep moving by learning the necessary lessons about pandemics and by improving practices of emergency reporting, and finally, finding some time for rest and recuperation. Therefore, in order to cover the emergency situations such as the COVID 19 pandemic, the online media in Kosovo were expected to act relying on sound and ethically challenging reporting practices. The print media, television, radio and online media in particular, have made fundamental mistakes, not to mention information coming from social media accounts, which provide no evidence on who stands behind them. Sensitive circumstances require high professionalism, maturity, knowledge, and courage to face with unexpected situations and avoid the spread of fake news, which may have extremely negative impact in society. Unfortunately, there is only a small number of journalists in Kosovo capable of performing such field tasks with integrity and professionalism. Therefore, the attention we should pay towards this phenomenon obliges us to be really good and smart professionals and to calmly face the way Covid-19 is reported. The editorial teams of online media, televisions, radios and newspapers must assign mature journalists with sufficient experience and knowledge about the danger that distorted or inaccurate information pose. It is not only the journalists who should be at their best, because the statements of the institutionally responsible persons are also vital in this respect. This topic indeed addresses the reporting differences and nuances in reporting this global pandemic or other crisis situations

    No full text
The topic addressed in this paper highlights interesting developments regarding the role and impact of investigative journalism in Kosova - a field accompanied by numerous risks and challenges in fulfilling a mission that is as delicate as it is noble and beneficial to society. Comparative methods and monitoring of online media in Kosova that genuinely engage in investigative journalism reveal serious concerns in this area, while also providing materials, documents, and numerous pieces of evidence about both the advantages developed by Kosovar media and the shortcomings they display. Investigative journalism exists and is developing in Kosova; however, this sector is still perceived as a threat by those who oppose the publication of materials or facts that stand against wrongdoing and those who create or cause misuse and crimes of various kinds. The research findings indicate that a portion of the Kosovar media adheres to the criteria, principles, guidelines, and professional agendas regarding the proper functioning of investigative journalism. Nevertheless, allegedly in the name of investigative journalism, there is a segment that, in certain situations, misuses and misleads the public. The paper presents numerous arguments and compelling comparisons regarding the definition of investigative journalism by various international and local authors. Investigative journalism is undoubtedly difficult and challenging, yet achievable and highly effective, provided the journalist or media outlet is dedicated, conscientious, and trustworthy in the eyes of the public

The state of the portals and the internal organization of an online medium in Kosovo. Do you know who owns the portals in Kosovo, and why is media ownership important?

The topic that I have chosen to address is the state of online media, their organization, and in particular, the issue of portal ownership in Kosovo. I have taken this very seriously because it belongs to this field, and I know it well, or at least I try to understand it. I will address all professional, ethical, and organizational circumstances related to and around Kosovar portals. When the first online journalism initiatives began in Kosovo, new innovative ideas began to emerge, to make a portal as beautiful as possible in terms of color. In this paper of mine, the many dilemmas and confusions that arise from the internal organization of a portal, the financial side, and the issue of online media ownership in Kosovo will be addressed. Of all these doubts, undoubtedly essential, for a portal continues to be professional and educational preparation, in the general field of journalism. It may be the director of the medium without a journalism faculty, but it would be anachronistic if the editor-in-chief and editorial staff do not consist of 90 percent of journalists. It is important. that each portal in its imprint, makes public its founder, and the editorial team which is then forwarded with all the internal rules, which includes the code of ethics and its editorial concept. And it is quite normal, that in all this hesitation, the online media should be more transparent in their professional and ethical functioning, but also in the sense of transparency and legality. Who owns the main portals, who are the financiers, who are the editors, and so on, there is still a lack of them, for the public to know and know. Online media and its owners. must show an act of courage in their walks and not run away not to hide behind fictitious names. Still in Kosovo, there are portals that work unregistered anywhere and this is extremely worrying. Why is media ownership so important and does it affect the editorial policy of the medium? The answer is that it affects, even a lot, all the more so in Kosovo and the region, where the professional mentality remains hostage to the boss or manager

The history of COVID-19 has profoundly affected both the professional and personal level of journalists, from psychological trauma and refined investigations, to the health risks to their families. But experts say planning, daily habits can make work manageable - the very fact of working and the feeling of doing something good can turn into a factor of strength and motivation that journalists can use. The advice given by media experts is this: learn, plan, relax and communicate. Therefore, to report on such a situation, such as the already global spread of Coronavirus, you need to know many things and principles on how to report on this sensitive and challenging situation for the Kosovar media. The print media, television, radio and portals in particular have made initial mistakes, not to mention those social networks that have not even made headlines and have no information about who is behind them. Sensitive situations require high professionalism, prudence, knowledge and courage to face the unexpected and avoid the impact of misinformation spread by false news. Unfortunately in Kosovo we have very few journalists who had been able to perform this task with conscience and professionalism from the field. Therefore, the attention we must show towards this phenomenon obliges us to be really good and smart professionals to calmly face the way Covid- 19 is reported. The editorial offices of portals, but also of televisions, radios and newspapers must urgently engage journalists who are mature, who have experience and knowledge on the danger posed by distorted or inaccurate information. It is not only the journalists who should be in charge because the statements of the institutionally responsible persons are also vital here. My topic addresses precisely these journalistic differences and nuances in the report or toward any global pandemic

Sensitive news reporting on conflicting situations– Mitrovica case

    No full text
I titled this topic ‘Sensitive news reporting on conflicting situations’ to narrow the focus mainly on the existing and nearly continuous problems occurring in the Mitrovica region and its surroundings, Leposaviq, and other problematic towns. Electronic and broadcast media are experiencing serious problems reporting from the said areas, including threats, time pressure, lack of security in the field, lack of institutional protection, and physical assault against them. Though monitored by many relevant factors, including UNMIK, OSCE, KFOR, Kosovo Police, and other organizations and institutions, the Mitrovica region as an area with plenty of security problemsdue to incessant conflicts, remains a problematic place to be covered by the media outlets. Mistakes ofthe March 2004 riots are still fresh in our memories when international institutions pointed out failures in the coverage, especially those aired by young and inexperienced journalists reporting from the field. The main dilemma lies exactly here. Do Kosovan media need to be emotionallyinduced or should strive for unbiased and professional reporting when covering sensitive situations? There are plenty of processes and techniques as to how media can create a better professional approach when it comes to the nature of reporting in extraordinary situations. Extraordinary situations require a different approach and the highest attention for every detail or obstacle presented. In the day-to-day work of a journalist neither ‘miracles’nor ‘obstacles’ happen every day, therefore a journalist must understand that difficulties will be present at every stage of their development. A journalist punches a good report as long as he or she respects the hot spots articulated again and again by many authors and journalism scholars. This work is designed to elaborate on the proper coverage details by offering professional guidelines and agendas
