No full textProfessor Alfredo Falcone and Dr Lisa Salvatore speak to Roshaine Gunawardana, Managing Commissioning Editor: Professor Alfredo Falcone is the Director of the Department of Oncology and the Specialization School at the University Hospital of Pisa, Italy. He trained in Pisa and Genoa, Italy, and has held major positions in Italian oncology since 2000. He currently has more than 300 publications, including papers in peer-reviewed international and national journals, book chapters, and more than 600 abstracts of presentations to international and national conferences. The majority of his papers regard clinical and translational research, with a particular focus on metastatic colorectal cancer. Dr Lisa Salvatore is a medical oncologist in the Department of Translational Research and New Technologies in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Pisa. She has been an author on about 40 publications in major peer-reviewed publications and has made numerous presentations in national and international conferences. Her main interest is focused on clinical and translational research in metastatic colorectal cancer

Get PDFScaffolding teaching, learning and assessment in Higher Education Authors: Lisa Murtagh and Maggie Webster AbstractThis paper reports the initial findings of a small scale initiative undertaken in a modern university in the United Kingdom to investigate the use of a scaffolded approach to teaching, learning and assessment. The design of a specific module was structured such that the mode of assessment; in this case a presentation, became a focus for each taught session, with each session being strategically scaffolded to increase individual student engagement. The findings demonstrate that such an approach served to impact on students’ ability to engage in self-regulated learning and to impact positively on the academic achievement of most students involved; however, for some students, the impact was ‘negative’. The paper concludes that although a scaffolded approach to teaching, learning and assessment is, in the main, conducive to deep learning and can potentially lead to improved academic achievement, consideration needs to be given to how and why particular modes of assessment are used to assess student achievement. Enhancing preparation for higher education
No full textEvidence from national and international studies points to the lack of preparation for Higher Education (HE) as a major factor for student non-completion of courses. This paper reports the findings of a study designed to enhance potential students’ understandings of the expectations of independent learning and assessment. It seeks to provide evidence of the ways in which students and their families can be supported in their understanding of the values and practices of a HE institution. Data are drawn from questionnaires distributed to potential pre-entry students and their parents/carers/friends. The findings illustrate that in allowing for opportunities for pre-entry students to develop a transparent understanding of the expectations of HE study, that they can be supported in the transition to HE by parents/carers/friends. It is hoped that the outcomes of this research will contribute to a more informed transition to HE
