The use of crowdfunding as an alternative way to finance small businesses in France
ABSTRACT
The global financial crisis of 2008 has led to a sharp decline in granting loans to businesses by financial institutions in France while the financing stage for the creation or development of a small business or a start-up is the most important phase. In addition, it’s important to know that the French economy landscape is built by more than 95% of small businesses. The recent advent of crowdfunding also called “finance participative” in French can be considered in one of the solutions by an entrepreneur regarding the lack of traditional sources of funding support.
The purpose of this dissertation is to provide a general definition of the new concept of crowdfunding and whether it is a solid and sustainable alternative of funding for French entrepreneurs. The other objective of this research is to contribute to the French literature on this subject because it is very limited today. Moreover, the results of this study can be used by both entrepreneurs and investors as a user guide, as the author gives several recommendations to start a business or invest via crowdfunding platforms.
To implement this study, data were collected from two types of sources: primary and secondary data. The primary data were obtained through four interviews with French people directly related to crowdfunding: two entrepreneurs, one investor and one market expert. The secondary data come from multiple reliable supports (books, academic journals, official reports). The literature review aims to give a comprehensive definition of crowdfunding, explain its main characteristics and show its level of development in France.
The results indicate that crowdfunding is still an option for French entrepreneurs and not a strong enough alternative and recognized means of financing. This way of financing is experiencing an exponential growth in France and in the rest of the world and according to expert forecasts crowdfunding will become a major player in funding industry in the coming years. Crowdfunding development in France is supported by the current government who has initiated a reform to make a more flexible regulation and increased the investment amount for small companies via crowdfunding. The results also show that a crowdfunding campaign is a full time job and creating a community around the project is essential to attract investment crowdfunders. The potential of factoring as part of the working capital management. How far can German SME´s improve their financial management by the usage of factoring?
The consequences of the new bank regulation law Basel III will force German small and medium-sized enterprises to think about alternative forms of finance. In order to finance their business activities and to ensure a sufficient amount of liquidity within the company these firms could use factoring as part of their working capital management respectively their receivables management.
This dissertation shows that factoring would offer immense advantages to German SME´s concerning their liquidity management. Next to the opportunity to shorten the Cash Conversion Cycle they could also become less addicted to bank loans and their liquidity planning process could be simplified. However, it turned out that the willingness of using factoring depends on the company size. Especially smaller SME´s in Germany still deny the usage of factoring because they are afraid that the close relationship to their clients may be damaged. The study also identified a positive correlation between the average distance to the client and the willingness to use factoring. In other words SME´s which are located far away from their clients apply factoring more often than companies which are located near their clients.
Moreover it was found out that international factoring has a very high potential for small and medium-sized enterprises in Germany. In view of the growing meaning of internationalization for German SME´s, the usage of international factoring will surely increase in the future. Author keywords:Factoring, financing with receivable

Iceland’s response to their economic and banking crises
In times before its economic crisis, Iceland developed to a country with one of the highest living standards in the world. This time was characterized by privatisation and liberalisation.
Its rise, however, ended abruptly in 2008 with its economic and banking crisis.
This crisis was enabled by an inefficient and deregulated banking sector combined with a weak and powerless supervision, which allowed banks to operate well beyond the capacity of the central bank. Total assets of the banking sector equated to 900 percent of the coutry’s GDP. With the beginning of the global financial crisis this model was no longer sustainable.
Iceland responded with a mix of partly unorthodox measures:
Banking reforms were initiated and supervision was strengthened.
Commercials and Central Bank was recapitalized
Capital controls were introduced to stop the Icelandic Krona from depreciating
Monetary policy was tightened to reduce and stabilise inflation
Public expenditure was reduced and taxes raised to return to a budgetary surplus and a positive current account
Fiscal deficits were bypassed by credit lines from the IMF and many other countries
Until now these measures had mixed results. It was possible to reduce inflation rate and stabilise the krona. Also did the fiscal balance return to positive, but is significantly lower than expected and planned. Similarly, the current account returned to appositive level, but nevertheless remained very volatile and small. Further did unemployment rate rise as a consequence of the restrictive policies, but has a trend to lower levels.
The measures therefore were partly effective, but their long-term consequences have to be observed further on. Author keywords: Iceland, crisis, fiscal policy, monetary policy, IMF, inflation, unemplymen
