Spatial distribution of R&D expenditure and patent applications across EU regions and its impact on economic cohesion
This article explores the spatial distribution of regional technology indicatorsin the EU over the last decade and its impact on cohesion. Thus, we find thatpublic R&D spending and patent applications have converged among regions duringthe nineties. On the other hand, private R&D activities have diverged, as a result of anasymmetric expansion during the second half of the nineties. We show that when thedispersion of public R&D across regions diminished in the second half of the nineties,income disparities at regional level also decreased. Therefore, while technologypolicy based on efficiency criteria should remain as a policy tool for economicgrowth, this policy should be counterbalanced by R&D funds to the least developedregions to maintain economic cohesion

The Dispersion of Technology and Income in Europe: Evaluation and Mutual Relationship Across Regions
The first part of this article explores whether convergence has occurred in technology and income across EU regions during the period 1990–2002. The second part evaluates whether these two processes of convergence are related to each other. With respect to the first question, we find that all R&D indicators and patents have converged among regions during the 1990s and this has ran parallel to a real convergence in income per capita levels. Regarding the second question, we have identified a strong relationship between the distribution of technology indicators and the distribution of regional income in Europe. Our main result is that convergence in business R&D leads to convergence in patents, which in turn leads to convergence in income per capita. Although, we identify a role for government R&D and higher education spending in this process, the policy implications for these two variables are less clear

Hydrodynamic behaviour of compacted granite sawdust from the dimension stone industry of Pontevedra (Spain): experimental and modelling
Two large-scale column experiments have been performed to test the hydrodynamic behaviour of unsaturated, compacted granite sawdust—a material produced during the dressing of dimension stone in Pontevedra (Spain). One of the columns was equipped with psychrometers and capacitance probes while, in the other, a radial array of 80 electrodes made possible a time-dependent 3D electrical resistivity survey. All these devices allowed investigating and modelling the progressive saturation of the material. The study includes a straightforward methodology developed to calibrate the resistivity signals based on standard Proctor-compacted specimens. The progressive saturation of the granite sawdust reveals different stages: initially, an uneven advance of the saturation front (fingering) occurs; later on, this feature vanishes and is replaced by a more regular advance of the saturation front. Numerical analysis of the results shows that the yield capacity of the granite sawdust is ~0.39 m3 m?3 and a saturated hydraulic conductivity ~2 × 10?6 m s?1. The latter, which corresponds to the specific standard Proctor compaction, is not sufficient to support the use of granite sawdust for compacted-single-layer capping structures. Nonetheless, increased compaction efforts or improved design criteria (multilayer systems or capillary barriers) can keep bearing when considering granite sawdust for this purpose
Regionalizing the sea-level budget with machine learning techniques
Attribution of sea-level change to its different drivers is typically done using a sea-level budget approach. While the global mean sea-level budget is considered closed, closing the budget on a finer spatial scale is more complicated due to, for instance, limitations in our observational system and the spatial processes contributing to regional sea-level change. Consequently, the regional budget has been mainly analysed on a basin-wide scale. Here we investigate the sea-level budget at sub-basin scales, using two machine learning techniques to extract domains of coherent sea-level variability: a neural network approach (self-organizing map, SOM) and a network detection approach (δ-MAPS). The extracted domains provide more spatial detail within the ocean basins and indicate how sea-level variability is connected among different regions. Using these domains we can close, within 1σ uncertainty, the sub-basin regional sea-level budget from 1993–2016 in 100 % and 76 % of the SOM and δ-MAPS regions, respectively. Steric variations dominate the temporal sea-level variability and determine a significant part of the total regional change. Sea-level change due to mass exchange between ocean and land has a relatively homogeneous contribution to all regions. In highly dynamic regions (e.g. the Gulf Stream region) the dynamic mass redistribution is significant. Regions where the budget cannot be closed highlight processes that are affecting sea level but are not well captured by the observations, such as the influence of western boundary currents. The use of the budget approach in combination with machine learning techniques leads to new insights into regional sea-level variability and its drivers

Armed violence and poverty in Somalia: a case study for the Armed Violence and Poverty Initiative
YesThis report on Somalia is one of 13 case studies. This research draws upon secondary data sources including existing research studies, reports and evaluations commissioned by operational agencies, and early warning and survey data where this has been available.
