Mixing of miscible liquids in gas-segmented serpentine channels

    No full text
The chaotic mixing of miscible liquids in gas-segmented serpentine channels is studied computationally in a two-dimensional setting. Passive tracer particles are used to visualize and quantify the mixing. The molecular diffusion is ignored and only the mixing due to chaotic stirring is considered. Mixing is quantified using the entropy and intensity of segregation measures. The effects of various non-dimensional parameters on the quality of mixing are investigated and it is found that the relative bubble size, the capillary number and the non-dimensional channel corrugation length are the most important parameters influencing the mixing. The mixing is found to be weakly dependent on Reynolds number and nearly independent of viscosity rati

Axial dispersion in segmented gas-liquid flow: Effects of alternating channel curvature

    No full text
The effects of channel curvature on the axial dispersion in segmented gas-liquid flows are studied computationally in a two-dimensional setting using a finite-volume/front-tracking method. Passive tracer particles are used to visualize and quantify the axial dispersion. The molecular diffusion is modeled by random walk of tracer particles. It is found that there is significant axial dispersion in serpentine channels even in the absence of molecular diffusion. The lubricating thin liquid layer that persists on the wall of a straight channel is periodically broken in the serpentine channel leading to enhanced axial dispersion. It is also found that the axial dispersion is always larger in the serpentine channel than that in the straight channel but the effects of channel curvature are more pronounced at high Peclet numbers, i.e., Pe > 10(4). A model is proposed based on the difference between the liquid film thicknesses on the inner and outer side of the bend in the limit as Pe ->infinity. Good agreement is found between the computational results and the model when the liquid slug is well mixed by the chaotic advection. (C) 2010 American Institute of Physics. [doi:10.1063/1.3531742

A new robust consistent hybrid finite-volume/particle method for solving the PDF model equations of turbulent reactive flows

    No full text
A new robust hybrid finite-volume (FV)/particle method is developed for solving joint probability density function (JPDF) model equations of statistically stationary turbulent reacting flows. The method is designed to remedy the deficiencies of the hybrid algorithm developed by Muradoglu et al. (1999, 2001). The density-based FV solver in the original hybrid algorithm has been found to be excessively dissipative and yet not very robust. To remedy these deficiencies, a pressure-based PISO algorithm in the open source FV package, OpenFOAM, is used to solve the Favre-averaged mean mass and momentum equations while a particle-based Monte Carlo algorithm is employed to solve the fluctuating velocity-turbulence frequency-compositions JPDF transport equation. The mean density is computed as a particle field and passed to the FV method. Thus the redundancy of the density fields in the original hybrid method is removed making the new hybrid algorithm more consistent at the numerical solution level. The new hybrid algorithm is first applied to simulate non-swirling cold and reacting bluff-body flows. The convergence of the method is demonstrated. In contrast with the original hybrid method, the new hybrid algorithm is very robust with respect to grid refinement and achieves grid convergence without any unphysical vortex shedding in the cold bluff-body flow case. In addition, the results are found to be in good agreement with the earlier PDF calculations and also with the available experimental data. Finally the new hybrid algorithm is successfully applied to simulate the more complicated Sydney swirling bluff-body flame 'SM1'. The method is also very robust for this difficult test case and the results are in good agreement with the available experimental data. In all the cases, the PISO-FV solver is found to be highly resilient to the noise in the mean density field extracted from the particles. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

Intertextuality theory which was propounded by Kristeva and improved by the literature theoreticians such as Barthes, Riffaterre, Jenny, Genette has started to use beginning from the 1960s in order to analyze the texts. Intertextuality asserts that a text can’t be existed by oneself and it carries the traces of the antecedents texts. Intertextuality inspection method focuses on the affiliations between two or more texts.Intertextuality is not only considered as an inspection method but also is used as a writing technique. This technique provide the fertile results for intertextuality researches. Moreover, this enables the sharing of information about the ground, basis, and sources of the text between author and readers. The author can lead the readers by means of the works which can be guide for the main text.In intertextuality inspection method, some terms are used such as referent, citation, hidden citation, adumbration, pastiche and parody. In this research, the seven fictional writings of Metin Savas have been examined in terms of intertextuality and referent-relations between texts were analyzed

How do grants influence firm performance?: an econometric evaluation of the SBIR program at NIH

This thesis is an econometric study of the impact of Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grants awarded by the US National Institutes of Health (NIH). NIH is the largest biomedical research funding agency in the world, investing over 29billionannuallyinmedicalresearch.ThebudgetofSBIRatNIHreached29 billion annually in medical research. The budget of SBIR at NIH reached 558.9 million in 2008. In the current economic environment, NIH administrators are interested in the relationship between their funding and health, economic growth and global competitiveness. This thesis will contribute towards an understanding of this relationship by examining sales and employment growth in firms that received SBIR awards from NIH. Using this information, all firms are matched to the National Establishment Time-Series (NETS) Database which provides firm-level sales and employment observations, as well as information on other explanatory variables. The main finding from the thesis is that the NIH SBIR program stimulates both sales and employment growth. Firms that received any number of Phase I and/or Phase II awards experienced 6.82% greater sales growth, and 6.90% greater employment growth over the three years following the first year they received an award compared to firms that applied to the program but were rejected, controlling for other factors. Firms that received one or more Phase II awards experienced 6.13% greater sales growth and 7.86% greater employment growth over the three years following the first year they received an award compared to those that applied but were rejected.M.S.Includes bibliographical references (p. 105-107)by Metin Eg

Religious thought: Its religious economy, transformation, and future

& Idot;shak Arslan's book titled Din Dusuncesi is a distinctive and original study compared to other works on religion in Turkish literature. Rather than focusing on religion itself, Arslan employs the concept of the "religious," which he defines as a form of generalized economy between the individual and the community. According to the author, the religious is structured around a "triadic spiral" composed of sacrifice, moderation, and hope. This triad distinguishes the religious from other forms of belief and spirituality. The book discusses the relationship between religion and economy, the functions of rituals, and the transformation of religion in the modern era. While presenting hedonism as the strongest rival to religion, it does not consider atheism or deism as genuine alternatives. This review highlights certain criticisms but emphasizes that Din D & uuml;& scedil;& uuml;ncesi makes an original and creative contribution to the literature

In a literary text, the author aims to describe a fact and an event, to clarify a point or to prove a claim. According to these purposes and acts, the author’s text has different functions like descriptive, narrative, expository and argumentative text types. All these features can be only in a text. The story by Günther Weisenborn, one of contemporary German authors, “Two Mans” has some of these different text types at the same time. In this study, functions and types of the text are shown on the example of this story, in which social and personal realities are implied
