Mujeres en las Ciudades: Jakoba H. Mulder, Urbanista

    No full text
Postprint (author's final draft

Also By The Same Author: AKTiveAuthor, a Citation Graph Approach to Name Disambiguation

    No full text
The desire for definitive data and the semantic web drive for inference over heterogeneous data sources requires co-reference resolution to be performed on those data. In particular, name disambiguation is required to allow accurate publication lists, citation counts and impact measures to be determined. This paper describes a graph-based approach to author disambiguation on large-scale citation networks. Using self-citation, co-authorship and document source analyses, AKTiveAuthor clusters papers, achieving precision of 0.997 and recall of 0.818 over a test group of eight surname clusters

This paper aims to make a whole list of the mathematics textbooks in the era of the Great Han Empire and summerize bibliographical data and linguistic characteristics in view of Korean history. In chapter 1, the author reviewed former studies which deals with the mathematics textbooks in the era of the Great Han Empire. In chapter 2, the author summerized bibliographical data of 45 volumes of 32 kinds textbooks. In chapter 3, the author described linguistic characteristics of the textbooks, especially focusing on writing systems, the use of Arabic numerals, horizontal writing, and presence of index or glossary

    Genetic analysis of environmental variation

    No full text
Environmental variation (V-E) in a quantitative trait - variation in phenotype that cannot be explained by genetic variation or identifiable genetic differences - can be regarded as being under some degree of genetic control. Such variation may be either between repeated expressions of the same trait within individuals (e. g. for bilateral traits), in the phenotype of different individuals, where variation within families may differ, or in both components. We consider alternative models for defining the distribution of phenotypes to include a component due to heterogeneity of V-E. We review evidence for the presence of genetic variation in V-E and estimates of its magnitude. Typically the heritability of V-E is under 10%, but its genetic coefficient of variation is typically 20% or more. We consider experimental designs appropriate for estimating genetic variance in V-E and review alternative methods of estimation. We consider the effects of stabilizing and directional selection on V-E and review both the forces that might be maintaining levels of V-E and heritability found in populations. We also evaluate the opportunities for reducing V-E in breeding programmes. Although empirical and theoretical studies have increased our understanding of genetic control of environmental variance, many issues remain unresolved.</p

A common HLA-DPA1 variant is associated with hepatitis B virus infection but fails to distinguish active from inactive Caucasian carriers

Background and Aims: Chronic infection with the hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a major health issue worldwide. Recently, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within the human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-DP locus were identified to be associated with HBV infection in Asian populations. Most significant associations were observed for the A alleles of HLA-DPA1 rs3077 and HLA-DPB1 rs9277535, which conferred a decreased risk for HBV infection. We assessed the implications of these variants for HBV infection in Caucasians. Methods: Two HLA-DP gene variants (rs3077 and rs9277535) were analyzed for associations with persistent HBV infection and with different clinical outcomes, i.e., inactive HBsAg carrier status versus progressive chronic HBV (CHB) infection in Caucasian patients (n = 201) and HBsAg negative controls (n = 235). Results: The HLA-DPA1 rs3077 C allele was significantly associated with HBV infection (odds ratio, OR = 5.1, 95% confidence interval, CI: 1.9–13.7; p = 0.00093). However, no significant association was seen for rs3077 with progressive CHB infection versus inactive HBsAg carrier status (OR = 2.7, 95% CI: 0.6–11.1; p = 0.31). In contrast, HLA-DPB1 rs9277535 was not associated with HBV infection in Caucasians (OR = 0.8, 95% CI: 0.4–1.9; p = 1). Conclusions: A highly significant association of HLA-DPA1 rs3077 with HBV infection was observed in Caucasians. However, as a differentiation between different clinical courses of HBV infection was not possible, knowledge of the HLA-DPA1 genotype cannot be translated into personalized anti-HBV therapy approaches

Inah has been having nightmares. Nightmares of fish bones, fractals, and a marriage that ended under some unnamed violence. Walking the night streets with a man she has known for years, whose feelings for her are bound up with his intense longing to live as a woman, the fragile bond of their relationship threatens to shatter. Internationally acclaimed author Han Kang directs her unflinching gaze on the painful complexities of damage and recovery, questioning what it is we want from ourselves and each other, and whether there are some things that are truly irreparable

    Corvèe under Han

    No full text
The author distinguishes between the corvee systems of Ch'in and Han. In spite of the fact that the corvee system underwent a marked change in 167 B. C. in the reign of Emperor Wen of Former Han, the fact has been hitherto almost entirely overlooked. The author tries to reconstruct the Ch'in corvee system from various sources. In the sense that these two ancient empires were despotic in their constitution there was no essential difference between their system of government, but Han succeeded in melting feudalistic residues of the Chan-kuo period into her own system, while Ch'in failed in doing so due to the short period of her rule. Moreover, Ch'in failed in taking local differences into consideration in establishing her institutions. In the author's view the reign of Emperor Wen is significant in the sense that it represents renovation of the feudalistic taxation system and of the uniform and artificial system of local administration
