Comparative mechanical performance evaluation of recycled brick aggregate concrete and natural aggregate concrete
The global increase in construction and demolition (C&D) waste due to natural disasters and urban redevelopment presents a significant environmental challenge. This study evaluates the mechanical performance of reinforced concrete (RC) beams incorporating recycled brick aggregates (RBA) as a sustainable alternative to natural aggregates (NA). Four concrete mixes were tested: 100 % NA, 100 % RBA, and two hybrid combinations of fine and coarse aggregates. RC beams were subjected to four-point bending tests, and companion cylindrical and prismatic specimens were tested for compressive strength and modulus of rupture (MOR). Results indicate that RC beams made with RBA can achieve shear capacities comparable to those made with NA. While beams incorporating coarse brick aggregates showed a more pronounced reduction in shear strength, with values dropping to 53.0 kN, the highest shear strength (71 kN) was observed in mixes using brick fine aggregates and natural coarse aggregates, nearly matching the 70.8 kN of the 100 % NA mix. However, 100 % RBA mixes exhibited a 24 % reduction in compressive strength and a 16 % reduction in MOR compared to NA mixes. Despite these reductions, the structural behavior and failure modes remained consistent across all compositions. From a sustainability perspective, the use of RBA offers a dual benefit: reducing the demand for virgin aggregates and diverting substantial volumes of brick waste from landfills. In regions where C&D waste constitutes a significant portion of total solid waste, adopting RBA concrete could conserve millions of tons of natural resources annually. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using 100 % recycled brick aggregates in structural concrete, supporting a circular economy approach in the construction sector
Intellectual capital performance in the financial sector:Evidence from China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan
It is no doubt that successful organizations tend to be those that persistently innovate, believing on new technologies and emphasizing on abilities and knowledge of their employees. Knowledge has become one of the most imperative intangible assets of financial institutions in recent years. The aspiring organizations have recognized that Intellectual Capital Efficiency is important in promoting the performance of financial institutions. This paper tests the relationship between intellectual capital and performance using a sample of 76 financial institutions from Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan over the period 2006–2016. The results show that intellectual capital efficiency has a significant and positive impact on the profitability of financial institutions, while human capital and structural capital are not significantly related to the performance of financial institutions in Taiwan and Hong Kong. The present research extends the knowledge of intellectual capital between managers, academicians, and highlights its contribution to the value creation. These results determine that the financial institutions need to emphasize on the elements of intellectual capital, to enhance the best financial performances in these countries.</p
Financial innovation and economic growth:Empirical evidence from China, India and Pakistan
This study investigates the causal relationship between financial innovation and economic growth in China, India, and Pakistan over the period of 1970-2016. Using an Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) bound testing and Granger causality-based Error Correction Model (ECM), this study finds that financial innovation generally has a positive and statistically significant impact on economic growth in the short-run and long-run. These results show that in the long run, monetary management and credit flow to the private sector play an essential role in economic growth. The trade openness and gross capital formation contribute considerably to the economic growth in China, India, and Pakistan. For robustness, this study also applies the Dynamic Ordinary Least Square (DOLS) and Fully Modified Ordinary Least Square (FMOLS) method. The findings of this study suggest that the financial sector plays an essential role in supporting innovation activity in Asian countries.<br/
Effect of zinc concentration on physical properties of copper oxide (Cu1-xZnxO)
Zn-doped CuO (Cu1-xZnxO) nano-rods have been prepared by simple chemical solution method, using Cu(CH3COO)(2)center dot 5H(2)O and NaOH as precursors. Prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and diffused reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). XRD results showed that grain size of the as-prepared samples increased while strain and dislocation density were found to decrease with the increase in Zn concentration. The absorption bands in FTIR spectra between the region 500-700 cm(-1) indicated the formation of Cu1-x Zn (x) O. The band gap measured from DRS exhibited an increasing trend (1.29-1.43 eV) with increasing Zn concentration. Absorption coefficient for reference sample was calculated to be 5.25 x 10(4) cm(-1) at 600 nm wavelength, and a decrease of 1.14 % was observed as the Zn concentration increased from 0 to 8 %. With maximum value of absorption coefficient and thermal absorptance in visible region, and its band gap energy close to that of an ideal material for photovoltaic conversion efficiency, suggests that Cu1-xZnxO is potentially a good candidate for solar absorption
CEO Characteristics and Valuation of the Organization: A Quantile Regression Analysis
This study examines the effects of three highly-visible CEO characteristics on a valuation of the organization. Using a sample for Chinese firms over the period of 2007-2016, we find that CEO age is consistently related with lower organizations’ valuation. CEO tenure is also related with lower valuation, but more significantly so in the higher quantiles of organizations’ valuation, that is for organizations with high growth opportunities. The CEO duality is found to be valuable only for organizations with high growth opportunities. Overall, this study highlights the contingent association between CEO characteristics and valuation of the organization.</jats:p
