Introducing Iqbal the Economist
No full textThe Iqbal Memorial Lecture was instituted in 1994 when the Pakistan Society of Development Economists (PSDE) celebrated the completion of a decade of steady progress. A brief announcement stated: “The Iqbal Memorial Lecture attributed to the national poet [Emphasis added], Allama Muhammad Iqbal has been included in the programme for the first time. Professor Ian M. D. Little is delivering that lecture” [Secretary’s Report (1994), p. 1472]. Iqbal, the poet and philosopher par excellence, has made incisive remarks or comments on economic and social issues in his poetry, philosophical writings, and in the course of his discourses as well as some famous letters, particularly those written to the Quaid-i-Azam, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan. But these do not make Iqbal an economist. The Secretary of the PSDE was, therefore, careful in observing that the lecture commemorates our “national poet”. However, it will be of great interest to this largest national congregation of economists and other scholars concerned with development to know that the very first published book of Iqbal related neither to poetry nor philosophy, but economics. It was written in Urdu. He also taught the subject at undergraduate and Master’s level, even though he had not studied it as a student. At the Government College, Lahore, Iqbal studied English, Philosophy and Arabic for his B.A. and then completed the M.A. in Philosophy.

Ali Farshi's Poem and Archetype: علی فرشی کی نظم اور آرکی ٹائپ
No full textArchetype is a term in psychology and anthropology; this is a combination of conscious and unconscious; with the help of this unconscious, all nations are connected. It is the reason for the creation of myths, giant beads, symbols, and folk stories. This world is the world of the archetype in as much as it contains nothing that is not an archetype. It could indeed be said that most of the problems of modernity result from ignorance of archetypes. A man should therefore understand what that means because, without such understanding, he would fail to understand himself. It is a term that is also used in Urdu literature. The concept of archetype is with every writer. Ali M. Farshi is a modern Urdu poet. Modernity is a very important and multi-meaning term that was initially considered synonymous with westernization. Modernity in the subcontinent entered in the form of translation and Punjab Association. Ali Farshi's concept of archetypes used in his poems is covered in this research article.

Quantification of the inhaled deposited dose during sand and dust storms
No full textExposure to dust particles during a sand and dust storm (SDS) can be harmful for health. The first step to understand the health effects of such exposure is to quantify the amount of deposited dust particles in the respiratory tracts. In this book chapter, a brief summary is presented about: (1) the outbreak mechanisms dust particles and being airborne, (2) physical and chemical characteristics of dust particles, and (3) toxins and health effects of dust particles. This summary was followed by a simple description about the exposure pathways with a focus on the inhaled deposited dose in the respiratory tract. The regional inhaled deposited dose was quantified by a simple model. The simple dose model was applied to quantify the dose rate for adult males or females being exposed to dust particles (i.e., SDS scenario) and undergoing common activities (resting and exercising)
Role of flame-retardants as EDCs in metabolic disorders
No full textThe destructive potential of fire is well known and thus it makes sense to prevent it from happening at all, or slow its rate of spread and to be able to stop it as soon as it happens in undesirable situations. Flame retardants (FRs), as the name indicates, are chemical substances with the capability of slowing down or preventing the growth of fire, have been used in many households and industrial products for a while now. Many kinds of FRs are currently in use, such as halogenated, organophosphosphate, nitrogenous, inorganic and intumescent coatings. These products are also well known to have many side effects, including carcinogenicity, reproductive toxicity, endocrine disruption, and immune system disorders. Not all fire retardants are made or function the same way thus vary in extent of fire-retardant capacity as well as toxic side effects. Herein we succinctly describe various classes of chemical FRs, and associated biological hazards to humans. We have also described underlying mechanisms or pathways that may possibly be involved in inducing endocrine disruption leading to obesity, diabetes, oxidative stress and inflammatory responses
Determinants of Sleep Quality in Cancer Patients: A Tertiary Center Experience from Punjab, Pakistan

Cancer diagnosis and treatment can trigger and/or worsen insomnia. This is a double-edged sword as sleep disturbances then exacerbate cancer symptoms.
Objectives:
1. To determine the sleep quality in cancer patients.
2. To determine the relationship of sleep quality with socioeconomic status, financial burden, marital status, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status, pain, use of analgesia and type of cancer.
Materials and Methods:
An analytical cross-sectional study was carried out with 100 adult and pediatric cancer patients presenting to Mayo Hospital, Lahore. The Urdu version of Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI-U), Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) and Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) score were used to determine the quality of sleep, intensity of pain, and performance status respectively.
Statistical Analysis:
Statistical analysis was carried out using through SPSS software version 26. Chi-square test was applied.
Results:
The mean PSQI score was 11.56 ± 5.70. Higher PSQI scores in older age groups (p=0.017), in patients with poor ECOG scores (p=0.016), the presence of pain (p=0.018) and greater frequency of pain throughout the day (p=0.019) significantly demonstrated poor sleep quality. Low PSQI scores in unmarried patients (p=0.036) and use of morphine and its derivatives (p=0.03) demonstrated significantly better quality of sleep.
Conclusion:
Cancer patients have poor sleep quality which is linked with advanced disease, aging, pain, and poor performance status. Medical, behavioral and psychological interventions can help in alleviating the sleep problems faced by these patients
Islamic distributive scheme: a concise statement
No full textThe present paper highlights the institutional arrange¬ment of Islam for distributive justice. It begins with a note that while Islam gives absolute guiding principles about production and functional distribution, its focus of attention is "re-distribution of income and wealth”. The paper also attempts to provide a comprehensive list of provisions in this regard prescribed by Islam and the main objectives thereof. It concludes with a note that since the primary concern of Indian planners and policy makers is to build a humane prosperous country based on justice and equity, they may benefit from the Islamic measures of distributive justice and can follow the broad outline given by Islam to enhance the social justice.Economics of Distribution, Islam and redistribution, Islamic Economics.
