"Author Meets Critics: Predrag Cicovacki, Author of Gandhi's Footprints, Meets Critics Sanjay Lal and Carlo Filice"
Two critics respond to Predrag Cicovacki’s book, Gandi’s Footprints. Cicovacki opens the discussion by presenting his motivations for exploring a paradox, that Gandhi’s work is widely revered but not widely emulated. Cicovacki explores a resolution to the paradox by suggesting how Gandhi’s promising visions may be followed without being imitated, especially Gandhi’s insight that we must seek spiritual grounding for life in a materialistic world. Critic Sanjay Lal affirms Cicovacki’s insight but suggests that precisely because Gandhi’s aspirations for spiritual life were profoundly transformative we should take care not to dilute them into our conventional wisdoms. Critic Carlo Filice asks how Gandhi’s commitment to unified reality could be more clearly articulated once a distinction is drawn between spirit and matter, also how Gandhi’s nonviolence could manage to embrace important exceptions. In reply to critics, Cicovacki proposes an approach to Gandhi informed by the insights of Tagore
Ascending the Nonviolence Continuum: Sanjay Lal, Author of \u3cem\u3eViolence, Nonviolence, and Moral Worth, \u3c/em\u3eMeets Critics
In this author-meets-critics discussion, Sanjay Lal presents the main ideas of his book Violence, Nonviolence, and Moral Worth, arguing that nonviolence meets violence along a continuum where there are degrees of greater and lesser examples, including a wide range of examples that combine both tendencies. Lal defines nonviolence in terms of three components that emphasize attitudes over actions: (1) a willingness to not harm others, (2) wanting to facilitate the well-being of others, (3) and not sacrificing one\u27s own moral worth. Three critics share their praises and concerns: Predrag Cicovacki challenges Lal to be more specific on the definition of moral worth, on the relationship between violence and nonviolence, and on the account that he gives for value theory and value conflict. Jennifer Kling asks if beliefs can serve as pre-existing grounds for action, if reconceptualizations of pop culture are bound to any limits, and if there are good reasons for assuming that all people are approachable. Danielle Poe asks what it means to reconceptualize popular culture as an approachable resource of nonviolent insight. Answering these questions, Lal reflects on what it means to be inspired by Gandhi’s example
Madho Lal
This chapter describes Muharram Ali's observations of drumming and music traditions linked to the Madho Lal Husain shrine in Lahore, Pakistan. Muhammad Mushtaq, Ali's shalwār, summarized Shah Husain's story. According to him, “The kāfīs of Shah Husain are very powerful for setting human beings on the straight path.” The chapter considers poetry and sayings attributed to Shah Husain as well as the ʻurs, a multifaceted event that drew pilgrims from many religious backgrounds, including Hindus, Sikhs, and Christians. It shows that, in Pakistan, understanding music, movement, poetic recitation, and other forms of action in Sufi shrines involves more nuanced categories than those of “scriptural Islam” and “Islam on the ground.” Even a rough map of the Madho Lal Husain complex would suggest this with its dedicated malang space, with its centers and peripheries created through performance.</p

The Road Ahead for Networking: A Survey on ICN-IP Coexistence Solutions
In recent years, the usage model of the Internet
has changed, pushing researchers towards the design of the
Information-Centric Networking (ICN) paradigm as a possible
replacement of the existing architecture. Even though both
Academia and Industry have investigated the feasibility and
effectiveness of ICN, achieving the complete replacement of the
Internet Protocol (IP) is a challenging task: (i) the process
involves multiple parties, such as Internet Service Providers
(ISPs), that need to coordinate among each other; (ii) it requires
an indefinite amount of time to update hardware and software
of network components; and (iii) it is a high risk goal that
might introduce unexpected complications. Thus, the process
of replacing the current Internet will inevitably lead towards a
period of coexistence between the old and the new architectures.
Given the urgency of the problem, this transition phase will
happen very soon and people should address it in a smooth way.
Some research groups have already addressed the coexistence
by designing their own architectures, but none of those is the
final solution to move towards the future Internet considering the
unaltered state of the networking. To design such architecture, the
research community needs now a comprehensive overview of the
existing solutions that have so far addressed the coexistence. The
purpose of this paper is to reach this goal by providing the first
comprehensive survey and classification of the coexistence architectures according to their features (i.e., deployment approach,
deployment scenarios, addressed coexistence requirements and
additional architecture or technology used) and evaluation parameters (i.e., challenges emerging during the deployment and
the runtime behaviour of an architecture). We believe that this
paper will finally fill the gap required for moving towards the
design of the final coexistence architecture
Fair-RTT-DAS: A robust and efficient dynamic adaptive streaming over ICN
To sustain the adequate bandwidth demands over rapidly growing multimedia traffic and considering the effectiveness of Information-Centric Networking (ICN), recently, HTTP based Dynamic Adaptive Streaming (DASH) has been introduced over ICN, which significantly increases the network bandwidth utilisation. However, we identified that the inherent features of ICN also causes new vulnerabilities in the network. In this paper, we first propose a novel attack called as Bitrate Oscillation Attack (BOA), which exploits fundamental ICN characteristics: in-network caching and interest aggregation, to disrupt DASH functionality. In particular, the proposed attack forces the bitrate and resolution of video received by the attacked client to oscillate with high frequency and high amplitude during the streaming process. To detect and mitigate BOA, we design and implement a reactive countermeasure called Fair-RTT-DAS. Our solution ensures efficient bandwidth utilisation and improves the user perceived Quality of Experience (QoE) in the presence of varying content source locations. For this purpose, Fair-RTT-DAS consider DASH’s two significant features: round-trip-time (RTT) and throughput fairness. In the presence of BOA in a network, our simulation results show an increase in the annoyance factor in user’s spatial dimension, i.e., increase in oscillation frequency and amplitude. The results also show that our countermeasure significantly alleviates these adverse effects and makes dynamic adaptive streaming friendly to ICN’s implicit features
COMPARATIVE STUDY OF EDITORIAL TREATMENT OF DAWN AND THE NEWS REGARDING LAL MASJID OPERATION
Abstract: Lal Masjid operation was one of the hot issues of Musharraf regime. Media disseminate the information to the people in many ways. No doubt the media has strong social and cultural impact on any society. Pakistani media portrayed Lal Masjid operation with different angles and with different point of views. Lal Masjid issue was attracting the full attraction of the media at the time when issue of national importance such as the independence of the judiciary and the decision on the fate of the chief justice media gave full time coverage to the Lal Masjid issue before the world. Media is considered fourth pillar of society and a free market of ideas. It guides, moulds and forms public opinion. People come to know about different issues after analyzing media opinion about it. This study has equipped for the method of content analysis of elite English newspapers of Pakistani press
