(orig./KW)The work investigates parallelization strategies for a numerical simulation model describing the transport, turbulent diffusion and chemical conversion of trace substances in the atmospheric boundary layer. First of all, the basic meteorological and chemical equations as well as the numerical grid point techniques used for their solution are described. Upon discussion of a modular procedure for parallelization, different grid sectioning methods are presented. The realization of these methods on a Paragon computer permits to discuss the efficiency of the results and to use them in evaluating the scaling of the number of processors respectively the model grid. A liberal theory of virtue and the good: The moral and political thought of T.H. Green
This dissertation critically examines the moral and political philosophy of T.H. Green in order to assess his reconceptualization of individuality, freedom, and rights within a common good liberal framework. The objective is to expand out understanding of Green's version of liberalism. There are four main themes: (1) Green's conception of individuality is appraised and upheld as a substitute for liberal individualism; (2) the role and place of values, virtues, and a conmon good in his moral philosophy are explored and defended vithin a liberal context; (3) Green's concept of political obligation, one based on a common good, is reviewed in order to demonstrate the liberal character of his apptoach; and (4) an attempt is made to extract from Green's texts a consistent theory of individual rights. The dissertation supports Green's revised conception of political obligation and his general theory of individual rights revolving around a liberal common good
Adaptive redundant residue number system coded multicarrier modulation
The novel class of nonbinary maximum minimum distance redundant residue number system (RRNS) codes is invoked in the context of adaptively RRNS coded, symbol-by-symbol adaptive multicarrier modulation, in order to combat the effects of frequency-selective fading inflicted by dispersive wide-band channels. The system’s performance can be adjusted in order to maintain a given target bit error rate (BER) and bit per symbol (BPS) performance. The proposed adaptive RRNS scheme outperforms the convolutional constituent code based turbo coded benchmarker system for channel signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) in excess of about 15 dB at a target BER of 10-4. Index Terms—Adaptive channel coding, adaptive modulation, adaptive OFDM, coded multicarrier modulation, OFDM, redundant residue number system
Universal low-temperature MWCNT-COOH-based counter electrode and a new thiolate-disulfide electrolyte system for dye-sensitized solar cells
A new thiolate-disulfide organic-based electrolyte system composed of the tetrabutylammonium salt of 2-methyl-5-trifluoromethyl-2H-[1,2,4]triazole-3-thiol (S-) and its oxidized form 3,3′-dithiobis(2-methyl-5- trifluoromethyl-2H-[1,2,4]triazole) (DS) has been formulated and used in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The electrocatalytic activity of different counter electrodes (CEs) has been evaluated by means of measuring J-V curves, cyclic voltammetry, Tafel plots, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. A stable and low-temperature CE based on acid-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-COOH) was investigated with our S--DS, I --I3 -, T--T2, and Co II-III-based electrolyte systems. The proposed CE showed superb electrocatalytic activity toward the regeneration of the different electrolytes. In addition, good stability of solar cell devices based on the reported electrolyte and CE was shown. © 2014 American Chemical Society.Ahmad S, 2010, CHEMPHYSCHEM, V11, P2814, DOI 10.1002-cphc.201000612; Balamurugan J, 2013, J MATER CHEM A, V1, P5070, DOI 10.1039-c3ta00140g; Bard A. Fables for Children, Young and Old, in Humorous Verse
See the 1848 second edition of this lovely little book. The differences here include a pictorial onlay on the front cover, now very worn and only half present. There are only six hand-colored plates here, as opposed to eight there. Images not included here but in the second edition are The Barber and His Customer and How Sir Roger Spent Christmas. And this book extends not to 126 but only to 64, where there is the clear marker The End. The colored plate of Bears and Buffaloes now faces not the hand-colored title-page but its fable on 11. The cover is here green cloth. The six colored plates in common offer a fine occasion for comparing the differences in hand-coloring the same image. I will include here some of the comments I made on the second edition. About 5 x 6½. The signature of T.H. Jones is clear on each of the illustrations. The title-page illustration is strong: an adult with distinctive round glasses reads from a fable-book to an eager group of children. Another attractive illustration is that of Tom and Harry and the Donkey (28). The fables here seem new to the Aesopic tradition. While they are humorous, they are also pointedly didactic. For example, the sparrow that envies ducks sees two of them decapitated (32)! For me the morally focussed character of the fables can make them tiresome. There is a presentation inscription from the author on the half-title-page and, from thirty-four years later, an owner's inscription on the inside front endpaper.
