No full textAbstractThe reformulation of the Bessis–Moussa–Villani (BMV) conjecture given by Lieb and Seiringer asserts that the coefficient αm,k(A,B) of tk in the polynomial Tr(A+tB)m, with A,B positive semidefinite matrices, is nonnegative for all m,k. We propose a natural extension of a method of attack on this problem due to Hägele, and investigate for what values of m,k the method is successful, obtaining a complete determination when either m or k is odd
Advances on the Bessis–Moussa–Villani trace conjecture
No full textAbstractA long-standing conjecture asserts that the polynomialp(t)=Tr[(A+tB)m]has nonnegative coefficients whenever m is a positive integer and A and B are any two n×n positive semidefinite Hermitian matrices. The conjecture arises from a question raised by Bessis et al. [D. Bessis, P. Moussa, M. Villani, Monotonic converging variational approximations to the functional integrals in quantum statistical mechanics, J. Math. Phys. 16 (1975) 2318–2325] in connection with a problem in theoretical physics. Their conjecture, as shown recently by Lieb and Seiringer, is equivalent to the trace positivity statement above. In this paper, we derive a fundamental set of equations satisfied by A and B that minimize or maximize a coefficient of p(t). Applied to the Bessis–Moussa–Villani (BMV) conjecture, these equations provide several reductions. In particular, we prove that it is enough to show that (1) it is true for infinitely many m, (2) a nonzero (matrix) coefficient of (A+tB)m always has at least one positive eigenvalue, or (3) the result holds for singular positive semidefinite matrices. Moreover, we prove that if the conjecture is false for some m, then it is false for all larger m. Finally, we outline a general program to settle the BMV conjecture that has had some recent success

Dynamic response studies on aggregation and breakage dynamics of colloidal dispersions in stirred tanks
No full textAggregation and breakage of aggregates of fully destabilized polystyrene latex particles in turbulent flow was studied experimentally in both batch and continuous stirred tanks using small-angle static light scattering. It was found that the steady-state values of the root-mean-square radius of gyration are fully reversible upon changes of stirring speed as well as solid volume fraction. Steady-state values of the root-mean-square radius of gyration were decreasing with decreasing solid volume fraction as well as with increasing stirring speed. Moreover, it was found that the steady-state structure and shape of the aggregates is not influenced by the applied stirring speed

In 1958 Mr. Moussa joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Egypt, where he worked in several departments and Egyptian missions including Egypt’s UN mission (1985-1972). In 1974-1977 Amr Moussa was an Assistant and Advisor to the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt. In 1977-1981 and 1986-1990 he held office of the Department of International Organizations as the Director in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Egypt. In 1981-1983 Mr. Moussa was an Alternate Permanent Representative of Egypt to the United Nations in New York. In 1983-1986 he worked as Ambassador to India. Amr Moussa worked as Permanent Representative of the Arab Republic of Egypt to the United Nations in 1990-1991. In 1991-2001 he was a head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Egypt. In 2001-2011 he worked as Secretary General of the League of Arab States. In his interview, Mr. Amr Moussa talks about the role of international organizations in the developing world, the peculiarities of regional political and economic integration of developing countries.
