Model Predictive Control Technique of Multilevel Inverter for PV Applications
Renewable energy sources, such as solar, wind, hydro, and biofuels, continue to gain
popularity as alternatives to the conventional generation system. The main unit in the renewable
energy system is the power conditioning system (PCS). It is highly desirable to obtain higher
efficiency, lower component cost, and high reliability for the PCS to decrease the levelized cost of
energy. This suggests a need for new inverter configurations and controls optimization, which can
achieve the aforementioned needs. To achieve these goals, this dissertation presents a modified
multilevel inverter topology for grid-tied photovoltaic (PV) system to achieve a lower cost and
higher efficiency comparing with the existing system. In addition, this dissertation will also focus
on model predictive control (MPC) which controls the modified multilevel topology to regulate
the injected power to the grid. A major requirement for the PCS is harvesting the maximum power
from the PV. By incorporating MPC, the performance of the maximum power point tracking
(MPPT) algorithm to accurately extract the maximum power is improved for multilevel DC-DC
converter. Finally, this control technique is developed for the quasi-z-source inverter (qZSI) to
accurately control the DC link voltage, input current, and produce a high quality grid injected
current waveform compared with the conventional techniques.
This dissertation presents a modified symmetrical and asymmetrical multilevel DC-link
inverter (MLDCLI) topology with less power switches and gate drivers. In addition, the MPC
technique is used to drive the modified and grid connected MLDCLI. The performance of the
proposed topology with finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) is verified by
simulation and experimentally. Moreover, this dissertation introduces predictive control to achieve
maximum power point for grid-tied PV system to quicken the response by predicting the error
before the switching signal is applied to the converter. Using the modified technique ensures the
iii
system operates at maximum power point which is more economical. Thus, the proposed MPPT
technique can extract more energy compared to the conventional MPPT techniques from the same
amount of installed solar panel.
In further detail, this dissertation proposes the FCS-MPC technique for the qZSI in PV
system. In order to further improve the performance of the system, FCS-MPC with one step
horizon prediction has been implemented and compared with the classical PI controller. The
presented work shows the proposed control techniques outperform the ones of the conventional
linear controllers for the same application. Finally, a new method of the parallel processing is
presented to reduce the time processing for the MPC
High resolution millimeter wave imaging for self-driving cars
Recent years have witnessed much interest in expanding the use of networking signals beyond communication to sensing, localization, robotics, and autonomous systems. This thesis explores how we can leverage recent advances in 5G millimeter wave (mmWave) technology for imaging in self-driving cars. Specifically, the use of mmWave in 5G has led to the creation of compact phased arrays with hundreds of antenna elements that can be electronically steered. Such phased arrays can expand the use of mmWave beyond vehicular communications and simple ranging sensors to a full-fledged imaging system that enables self-driving cars to see through fog, smog, snow, etc.
Unfortunately, using mmWave signals for imaging in self-driving cars is challenging due to the very low resolution, the presence of fake artifacts resulting from multipath reflections and the absence of portions of the car due to specularity. This thesis presents HawkEye, a system that can enable high resolution mmWave imaging in self-driving cars. HawkEye addresses the above challenges by leveraging recent advances in deep learning known as Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). HawkEye introduces a GAN architecture that is customized to mmWave imaging and builds a system that can significantly enhance the quality of mmWave images for self-driving cars.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'U of I Access', the embargo will last until 2021-12-01The student, Junfeng Guan, accepted the attached license on 2019-12-09 at 12:07.The student, Junfeng Guan, submitted this Thesis for approval on 2019-12-09 at 12:16.This Thesis was approved for publication on 2019-12-09 at 15:49.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #14758 on 2020-02-28 at 17:23:56Made available in DSpace on 2020-03-02T22:15:15Z (GMT). Scaling IoT-based noise cancellation to multiple noise sources
A recent development integrating Internet-of-Things (IoT) sensing techniques with active noise cancellation (ANC) has demonstrated certain benefits over the conventional methods for ANC, including wideband cancellation without blocking the ear and non-causal adaptive filtering. These benefits, however, can only be observed in acoustic environments with a single noise source. This thesis presents a new design for an IoT-based active noise cancellation system that can effectively cancel multiple independent noise sources. By incorporating multiple reference microphone inputs, the new system can estimate the unique acoustic channels between different sources of noise and the listener. Through simulation and hardware experiments, this new design is evaluated and shown to achieve significant improvement in cancellation over the previous implementation of IoT-based ANC.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'U of I Access', the embargo will last until 2022-05-01The student, Michael Collins, accepted the attached license on 2020-05-11 at 17:56.The student, Michael Collins, submitted this Thesis for approval on 2020-05-11 at 18:06.This Thesis was approved for publication on 2020-05-12 at 14:09.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #15340 on 2020-08-25 at 17:31:01Made available in DSpace on 2020-08-26T23:58:46Z (GMT). Weirdness in the novels of Haitham Hussein
The phenomenon of expetriation is named as one of the vital isuues that take place widely both Arabic and Western literature studies. Because the phenomenon of expetriation has been a subject that has existed with humanity since the existence of man. As it contains some features, especially like still being a translator of people's feelings, thougts, a wide range of humanitarian concerns and a noble expression of their aspirations, generally, Because the novel; it clearly reflects the sad and painful experiences of the author. When we consider modern Syrian literature, it is seen that many novels and story writers are on the field of literature. Therefore, the phenomenon of foreignness in Heysem Hussein's novels, which is a part of the recent Syrian novel literature, was examined in the research. Moreover, the subject of the research has been studied in a descriptive and analytical method around the following questions and answers: What ise the concept and phenomenon of expetriation in the novels of Heysem Hussain? What are the types of these concepts? Why is this issue adressed by Hussain? How he embodies the concept and the phenomenon of expatriation on his novels? And can he be really successful on this field? In the study, elements of the novel such as the scene, heroes, time, subject, events, story and plot of an exemplary novel of the author were analyzed. Then the main heroes in the novel were analyzed. In addition, by examining the important people in all his novels, the effect of the phenomenon of expatriate on the novel heroes in thought, attitude and behavior was tried to be revealed
Performance of Reinforced Concrete Flat Slabs Having GFRP Gratings
A thorough study of the literature indicated that there is not much relevant research on the application of GFRP gratings. Otherwise, extensive study has been done on FRP bars, laminates, sheets, strips, and rods. This study proposes a novel approach to improve the punching shear resistance of flat slab column connections by inserting GFRP gratings across the slab thickness. The results of seven specimens tested under vertical static loading are presented, considering the influence of the grating’s characteristics. All specimens were tested as simply supported slabs under one point of static loading. Experimental results, including crack patterns, slab deflection, concrete compressive strain, tensile steel strain, GFRP grating strain, and failure load, were recorded using extensive electric instrumentation. Test results revealed an enhancement in the failure load ranging between 9.03% and 27.67% for the specimens provided with the GFRP grating. In addition, a nonlinear finite element numerical model analysis was carried out using the ANSYS 15 program. Correlational studies based on the load-deflection response and crack patterns were utilized, resulting in a good agreement between numerical simulations and experimental results with differences ranging from 1.0% to 8.0%.

Enhancement of punching shear behavior of reinforced concrete flat slabs using GFRP grating
The literature review showed insufficient relevant research on the application of Glass-Fiber-Reinforced-Polymers (GFRP) gratings in the structural elements, while GFRP bars, laminate, sheets, and strips, have been extensively explored. This research aims to present a proposal for a new reinforcing system using GFRP gratings to improve the punching shear resistance of RC flat slabs. Results of seven specimens tested experimentally under vertical static loading are displayed, taking into account the influence of the gratings variables. Test results revealed an improvement in the ultimate load ranging between 9.03% and 27.67% for the specimens strengthened by the proposed GFRP grating system. A Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis (NLFEA) was carried out using the ANSYS program with correlational evaluation using load-deflection response and cracking pattern, which resulted in a good convergence of numerical simulations and experimental performance results ranging from 1.0% to 8.0%. Key parameters, namely the concrete compressive strength, steel reinforcement yield strength, main steel reinforcement ratio, secondary steel reinforcement ratio, column dimensions, slab thickness, concrete cover, and GFRP gratings characteristics, were investigated through a parametric study adopting NLFEA by the ANSYS program, where the output results were compared to the recent code provisions
