Redundant operators in the exact renormalisation group and in the f(R) approximation to asymptotic safety

In this paper we review the definition and properties of redundant operators in the exact renormalisation group. We explain why it is important to require them to be eigenoperators and why generically they appear only as a consequence of symmetries of the particular choice of renormalisation group equations. This clarifies when Newton’s constant and or the cosmological constant can be considered inessential. We then apply these ideas to the Local Potential Approximation and approximations of a similar spirit such as the f (R) approximation in the asymptotic safety programme in quantum gravity. We show that these approximations can break down if the fixed point does not support a ‘vacuum’ solution in the appropriate domain: all eigenoperators become redundant and the physical space of perturbations collapses to a point. We show that this is the case for the recently discovered lines of fixed points in the f (R) flow equations

This hand-written testimony regarding the case of James Sawyer vs. John Waddle, et al, is dated July 15, 1859. It is the testimony of William R. Morris, Jr. regarding a planned towpath by Swan Creek. It is signed by Morris and notarized by J. M. Gloyd. Morris testified that, in his opinion, building a towpath for horses along Swan Creek was both inconvenient and unnecessary.James Sawyer"""" vs John Waddle et al"""""""""""""" William R. Morris Jr. makes oath that he has this day taken soundings of Swan Creek for some distance above the aqueduct, say about two miles from its mouth That the fig- ures on the annexed map shew said surroundings. - That vessels as large as any coming into this port are continually navigating said creek Applicant has seen large three masted vessels some distance above the wharf of said Plaintiff. Canal Boats have been propelled up and down of said creek by hand for more than two years past without seeming inconvenienced. That the inconvenience from this mode of propulsion can not compare with this inconvenience resulting to the vessels, if said canal boats are to be towed by horses and that the property on the southerly bank of said creek cannot be used for commercial purposes, if said towpath is built, so far as convenience by vessels is concerned Applicant thinks the water in said creek was today lower than its ordinary stage Sworn to and Subscribed before me, July 15, 1859 J. M. Gloyd Wm R Morris Jr. Notary Public Lucas Co. Ohio
