    Teutonic and Unmixed: Verstegan’s English

    Morini looks at Verstegan's Restitution of Decayed Intelligence in the context of Tudor-Stuart linguistics, or more precisely of Tudor-Stuart views of the English language. Throughout the sixteenth century, English scholars debated how best to extend the possibilities of and confer cultural prestige on the vernacular: some attempted a ‘purist’ defence of domestic linguistic roots, while the silent majority were in favour of a moderately ‘neologizing’ position that would allow writers and translators to add to the native stock by the insertion of foreign terms designating new cultural objects. Verstegan’s book is a very important, though rather belated, fruit of the purist tree: through an analysis of the key terms which recur in the historical and philological chapters (the English tongue and the blood of the English people must be kept ‘pure’ and ‘unmixed’) and by comparing Verstegan’s idea of ‘Teutonic English’ with analogous or contrasting positions expressed by John Cheke, Philip Sidney, and others, Morini enlists A Restitution on the losing side of that ‘struggle for a noble vernacular’ from which modern English emerged as a highly impure and compound language

    Filling a gap in the study of early modern literature, Massimiliano Morini here exhaustively examines the aims, strategies, practice and theoretical ideas of the sixteenth-century translator. Morini analyzes early modern English translations of works by French and Italian essayists and poets, including Montaigne, Castiglione, Ariosto and Tasso, and of works by classical writers such as Virgil and Petrarch. In the process, he demonstrates how connected translation is with other cultural and literary issues: women as writers, literary relations between Italy and England, the nature of the author, and changes in the English language. Since English Tudor writers, unlike their Italian contemporaries, did not write theoretical treatises, the author works empirically to extrapolate the theory that informs the practice of Tudor translation - he deduces several cogent theoretical principles from the metaphors and figures of speech used by translators to describe translation. Employing a good blend of theory and practice, the author presents the Tudor period as a crucial transitional moment in the history of translation, from the medieval tradition (which in secular literature often entailed radical departure from the original) to the more subtle modern tradition (which prizes the invisibility of the translator and fluency of the translated text). Morini points out that this is also a period during which ideas about language and about the position of England on the political and cultural map of Europe undergo dramatic change, and he convincingly argues that the practice of translation changes as new humanistic methods are adapted to the needs of a country that is expanding its empire

    One of the main difficulties of literary stylistics is disentangling the stylistician’s “subjective” stance from the “objective” methods of linguistic research. Geoffrey Leech and Mick Short defined the question by making reference to Spitzer’s Zirkel im Verstehen, or “philological circle”, as they called it: the researcher’s insight is guided by linguistic observation, but the latter depends on the researcher’s habits and prejudices. Spitzer (1962: 19), Leech and Short (2007: 12) actually regarded the circle as virtuous, a method for guiding and enhancing the analyst’s intuitions: but the stylistician can also be seen as trapped into a vicious circle of understanding, unable to find anything that he/she did not set out looking for in the beginning (Morini 2009: 62). This is all the more true in relation to Shakespeare, for two reasons related to the massive weight of previous scholarship. On the one hand, the abundance of studies on every portion of the Shakespearean canon limits the stylistician’s insight even more: if the topic of one’s article is the centrality of appearances in Much Ado About Nothing, it becomes all but impossible to ignore the works that have been written on the subject (Lewalski 1968; Henze 1971; Dawson 1982; Dobranski 1998). On the other hand, and conversely, that abundance of studies will force him/her to choose a limited, previously unexplored linguistic aspect of the work under scrutiny: in the present case, the distribution of words of perception like “seem” and “appear” in Much Ado About Nothing. Guided and limited in this way, the analyst will end up demonstrating very little that was not inscribed in the terms of his/her research: words of perception, he/she will inevitably conclude, are crucial to the linguistic texture of the play

    Translation for the theatre is often considered to hold a marginal status between literary translation and adaptation for the stage. As a result, this book argues that studies of this complex activity tend to take either a textual or performative approach. After exploring the history of translation theory through these lenses, Massimiliano Morini proposes a more totalizing view of 'theatre translation' as the sum of operations required to transform one theatre act into another, and analyses three complex Western case histories in light of this all-encompassing definition. Combining theory with practice, Morini investigates how traditional ideas on translation – from Plautus and Cicero to the early 20th century – have been applied in the theatrical domain. He then compares and contrasts the inherently textual viewpoint of post-humanistic translators with the more performative approaches of contemporary theatrical practitioners, and chronicles the rise of performative views in the third millennium.     Il contributo presenta un modello integrato e interdisciplinare di educazione alla lettura che è stato sviluppato nell’ambito di una ricerca empirica finalizzata a promuovere il pensiero creativo e divergente degli studenti (Biasi et al. 2019; Biasi et al. 2020; Moretti & Morini, 2020; Poce, 2020). L’obiettivo della ricerca è stato di verificare se e in che modo sia possibile qualificare la proposta didattica introducendo nel contesto scolastico attività, esperienze e materiali artistici ad integrazione e supporto dei contenuti curricolari. La ricerca ha coinvolto quattro classi quinte di scuola primaria, di cui due classi sperimentali e due classi di controllo. Le classi sono state individuate in contesti educativi impegnati nella promozione del libro, della lettura e nella fruizione di illustrazioni originali di autore. Nelle classi sperimentali gli insegnanti hanno partecipato a un percorso di formazione in cui è stata rivolta particolare attenzione agli albi illustrati, ai libri d’arte, agli e-book illustrati e interattivi e alle app dedicate all’arte. Gli esiti della ricerca confermano come il modello integrato e interdisciplinare di educazione alla lettura sia stato efficace e abbia prodotto un risultato statisticamente significativo nelle classi sperimentali a confronto con il gruppo di controllo
