The production and trade of objects manufactured from the skeletal axis of coralid precious corals is a historically, culturally and economically important global industry. Coralids are members of the diverse Coralliidae family, which contains several species complexes and morphospecies. For most precious coral found in the jewelry trade, the color remains the sole clue and link to the taxonomic identity of the individual. Different coralid species have however similar or overlapping colors resulting in difficulty to taxonomically identify jewelry objects, including four species listed by the Convention on the International Trade of Endangered Species (CITES) whose international transport and trade requires species-specific and country of origin documentation. We aimed at developing a reliable method to taxonomically identify coralid material with the objective of distinguishing CITES protected species from their non-protected counterparts. We present Coral-ID, a genetic assay to taxonomically classify coralid objects using quasi non-destructive sampling. The assay classifies the analyzed sample in one of six taxonomic categories and performs at least presumptive separation of CITES-listed and non-listed species in all cases. Developmental validation experiments prove that Coral-ID is a specific, accurate and very sensitive method. As the first attempt to randomly sample corals in the trade to identify them, we applied Coral-ID on 20 precious coral objects seized by custom authorities upon import to in Switzerland. Thirteen (65%) of these samples could be analyzed; three of these were found to be presumptively CITES-listed, and 10 of them have proven to originate from non-CITES-listed species

    Programiranje v jezikovnem izobraževanju odraslih

From the viewpoint of didactics and programming, not enough attention is paid to linguistic education of adults. Abilities for learning foreign languages do not decrease with age neither can they be measured with the same mechanisms as the knowledge of children. The author emphasises that topics are of the utmost importance; more and more adults need individually structured programs. Therefore, topics can only be chosen according to an agreement between or a mutual plan of the educator and the student. The very phase of programming is the disadvantage of numerous linguistic courses for adults; therefore, linguistic education of adults is still quite closely linked with the ideas valid for educating children and youths.

ln this contribution, the author of fers a description of the book Zofia\u27s World, by the Norwegian professor of philosophy, Jostein Gaarder, a work which is treated in literary theory mainly as an interesting post-modernist novel, since it would appear to be a presentation of the history of philosophy in the popular form of a novel. The author of this paper, however, sees far more in the book, which is indeed an exceptional philosophy textbook for independent study. It is, really, a correspondence course in philosophy, as is also reflected by the distinctive outer design of the book. The distinctive feature of Zofia\u27s World lies in the fact that the connective text is interwoven with chapters on philosophy in a wholly life-like way.

French philosopher Michel Serres is among the most important savants and humanists of our time. In the sixties, he wrote about the earth as a global communication space-in which the para digm of production was permanently substituted by the paradigm of communication -and about the necessity of establishing harmony between natural sciences and the humanities. One of Serres \u27s main concerns remains education. Critically, but also optimistically, he considers the possibilities provided by computer networks, which offer free of-charge access to knowledge, dissemination of knowledge and creation of new centres of learning, thus paving the way for a transformation of the communication society into the learning society of the future. Michel Serres is Professor at the Sorbonne and Stanford, author of numerous books, and member of the French Academy of Science.

The author investigated the correlation of the primary family on an individual\u27s romantic relationship and differences in trust in the romantic relationship, attachment style in adoulthood and the quality of relationships within the primary family among individuals who have experienced their parent\u27s divorce and those, who have not. In the theoretical section, the basic theory of attachment in childhood is described, including the process of attachment development, the various forms of attachment, and the characteristics typical for each type. The theory is then connected to attachment in adulthood, discussing the similarities and differences compared to attachment formed with caregivers. Internal working models and attachment styles in romantic relationships are also presented. The author also describes the influences of the primary family, the divorce process, and the consequences of divorce for individuals. Toward the end of the theoretical section, the focus shifts to the romantic relationship itself and the concept of trust in a romantic relationship. The master\u27s thesis also includes an empirical section in which a survey is conducted using five different questionnaires. A total of 515 participants took part, including 121 individuals with experience of their parents\u27 divorce and 294 without such experience. The research results showed a statistically significant correlation between the quality of relationships in the primary family and trust in the romantic relationship. The study also confirmed that a decrease in the quality of relationships in the primary family is associated with an increase in attachment anxiety but found no link with attachment avoidance. The research also confirmed that there is a statistically significant difference in the quality of relationships in the primary family and attachment style in individuals with experience of their parents\u27 divorce and those without such experience. However, differences in satisfaction in the romantic relationship between individuals with and without experience of their parents\u27 divorce were not established

The modernist angel: Art at the Limits of the Human in D. H. Lawrence, H. D. and Mina Loy

    No full text
PhDThe subject of this thesis is a figure that might provisionally be called the *modemist angel'. Focusing on modernist literature, and more particularly on the work of D. H. Lawrence, H. D. and Mina Loy, it aims to isolate from the many angels found in all periods and all types of art a historically specific and intellectually coherent paradigm: an angel of and for its modernist times. A figure of precisely this type could be said to exist in the form of Walter Benjamin's 'angel of history'. Critics who address the question of the modern angel in texts by Franz Kafka and Rainer Maria Rilke often do so in conjunction with the problem posed by the angel of history. Beginning with a chapter on Benjamin, this thesis nevertheless follows a different trajectory. Over five chapters, it explores a modernist landscape formed not only by Lawrence, H. D. and Loy, but also by European and American writers such as A. R. Orage, Allen Upward, Ezra Pound, Wallace Stevens, Havelock Ellis, Edward Carpenter, Sigmund Freud and Friedrich Nietzsche. Although the angel that emerges from this investigation might, in some respects, be said to anticipate Benjamin's later version, this figure is also very different, standing for a project that is distinctively, and recognisably, modernist in nature. He/she (the sex of the modernist angel is often open to question) represents an attempt to reconcile the divine responsibilities of the artist with the material and gendered conditions of being, specifically of being human, in the modem world. This thesis looks again at the clash of intellectual paradigms in the early-twentieth century - notably, the confrontation of the Romantic view of art as a superhuman or sacred undertaking with the psychoanalytical or evolutionary idea that all human endeavour is underpinned by sub-human motives - and suggests the angel as a new and instructive figure through which to think the perilous limits between the human and the divine in modernist literature

Authorial comic: From the idea to the realization / The Bohemian Youngsters

In the master\u27s thesis Author\u27s comic book: from idea to realization, I will comprehensively present the process of creating comics, from the original idea to the final realization in a low-volume edition. I will summarize my work process and my experience in creating The Bohemian Youngsters comic. I will focus on the following phases: genre selection, storytelling process, approach to painting, first sketches, drafts, and studies. Additionally I will describe the phase of the study of words, images and sound effects. I will also pay attention to the process of correcting comic books, making traditional covers and comparing them with other works of art (works on canvas, sculptures and graphics). I would like to conclude by explaining why comics are also an art form and presenting different opinions on why we place comic in the art world. ABSTRACT (practical thesis) The practical part of the master\u27s thesis consists of the following parts: - Pictures that are the cover for my comic The Bohemian Youngsters. Most of these paintings are gruesome interpretations of the first part of the comic. Images that are different in size and colorful, focused on complementary colours. -In addition, I have created a sculptural work of various characters, which are shown in the comic book. -It would also include a woodcut triptych depicting the degradation of one of the characters of the comic with a hidden message. The paintings, which are shocking in some respects, all relate to the final product. The comic is made in a traditional medium (acrylic, acrylic ink, watercolor), containing almost 40 pages of originally written story created for my master\u27s thesis. I would mention that this part is only the first part of a trilogy that would be intended for later publication

Factors Influencing Developers' Acceptance of Native Development Environments: An Expansion of the Technology Acceptance Model

    No full text
Mobile operating systems opening up their development environments to third-party developers evoke skyrocketing supply of mobile applications. This study investigates factors influencing the acceptance of third-party developers to adopt native development environments for creating mobile apps. Based on an extensive literature review, the author proposes a research model, built on the technology acceptance model created by Davis. Through the data collected from an online questionnaire completed by third-party app developers, the model was tested using structural equation modeling. Findings indicate a significant effect of the proposed constructs: self-efficacy, output quality, subjective norm, perceived enjoyment, perception of external control, developer community and training. This analysis confirms that the intention to use a native development environment is significantly affected by perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness, whereby the effect size of perceived usefulness is noticeably stronger. Managerial implications suggest to promote high usefulness rather than primarily focusing on an easy to use interface

Phylogeography and population genetic structure of the European roe deer in Switzerland following recent recolonisation

    Get PDF
In the early 1800s, the European roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) was probably extirpated from Switzerland, due to overhunting and deforestation. After a federal law was enacted in 1875 to protect lactating females and young, and limiting the hunting season, the roe deer successfully recovered and recolonised Switzerland. In this study, we use mitochondrial DNA and nuclear DNA markers to investigate the recolonisation and assess contemporary genetic structure in relation to broad topographic features, in order to understand underlying ecological processes, inform future roe deer management strategies and explore the opportunity for development of forensic traceability tools. The results concerning the recolonisation origin support natural, multidirectional immigration from neighbouring countries. We further demonstrate that there is evidence of weak genetic differentiation within Switzerland among topographic regions. Finally, we conclude that the genetic data support the recognition of a single roe deer management unit within Switzerland, within which there is a potential for broad scale geographic origin assignment using nuclear markers to support law enforcement

Internal validation of Tecan robots (Freedom EVO® 150 and 75) for PCR and capillary electrophoresis setup

We validated and established an automated method for PCR and capillary electrophoresis setup (CE setup), using the Tecan Freedom EVO® 150 and 75 automated liquid handling workstations powered by Freedom EVOware®. The PCR setup script of the Freedom EVO® 150 was based on the HID EVOlution™ System. However, substantial changes in the HID script were required before putting the system on stream in the routine. The CE setup of the Freedom EVO® 75 was based on a script made by application specialists of Tecan. For internal validation of the two robots, we investigated repeatability, reproducibility and occurrence of contaminations. The analysis of the reproducibility data demonstrated that electropherograms of samples pipetted by the robots had a lower mean size standard peak height, than the hand-pipetted samples, whereas the mean sample peak height did not differ between the two methods. This was mainly due to precision-differences between the robots and the hand-pipetting. The investigation of the occurrence of contaminations showed that with the PCR setup robot no sample got contaminated. The CE setup robot on the contrary revealed carryovers of samples from one well to the subsequent well. After intense examination, we discovered that the tip travel height was set too low, causing the tip to touch the rim of the 96 well plate which led to the carryovers. The contact between rim and tip could not be seen by naked eye, but after increasing the tip travel height, no further contamination was observed. Our validation demonstrates that robots, even when set up by application specialists, need to undergo a proper internal validation before being put on stream in the routine
