No full textExperimentally derived structural constraints have been crucial to the implementation of computational models of biomolecular dynamics. For example, not only does crystallography provide essential starting points for molecular simulations but also high-resolution structures permit for parameterization of simplified models. Since the energy landscapes for proteins and other biomolecules have been shown to be minimally frustrated and therefore funneled, these structure-based models have played a major role in understanding the mechanisms governing folding and many functions of these systems. Structural information, however, may be limited in many interesting cases. Recently, the statistical analysis of residue co-evolution in families of protein sequences has provided a complementary method of discovering residue-residue contact interactions involved in functional configurations. These functional configurations are often transient and difficult to capture experimentally. Thus, co-evolutionary information can be merged with that available for experimentally characterized low free-energy structures, in order to more fully capture the true underlying biomolecular energy landscape

No full text“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Kennedy sent a telegram to the citizens of Roosevelt, New Jersey, apologizing for not being able to attend the memorial dedication in honor of former President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. (Jersey Homesteads became Roosevelt in 1945 in honor of the president.) Logarithmic variance profiles and the corresponding f-1 spectra of temperature fluctuations in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection
No full textWe report experimental results for the temperature variance 2(z) and the corresponding frequency spectra P(f) in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection (RBC) in a cylindrical sample of aspect ratioT= D/L = 1:00 (D = 1:12 m is the diameter and L = 1:12 m the height). The measurements were conducted in the Rayleigh-number range 1011 < Ra < 1:35 1014 and Pr ' 0:8. For Ra = 1:35x1014, 2(z) could be described well by a logarithmic dependence on the vertical position z in a range of z 1 < z < z 2 with z 1 ' 70 and z 2 = 0:1L. Here L=(2Nu) is the thickness of a thin thermal sublayer adjacent to the horizontal plate where the heat flux (denoted by the Nusselt number Nu) is carried mostly by thermal diffusion. In the log layer, we found that the temperature spectra had a significant frequency range over which P(f) f with close to 1. As Ra decreased, increased so that the log layer became thinner. At Ra = 2:05 1011, z 2 < z 1 and therefore there was no range for a log layer. Correspondingly, the temperature spectrum near the horizontal plate did not have the f1 scaling form either

No full textThe authors conducted an author cocitation analysis on prominent authors writing about the Olympics during the 1990s. Author cocitation is an established bibliometric technique that can be used to measure the relative similarities of topics written about by the cited authors. This enables a visual representation of the “intellectual space” of the discipline, in this case the Olympics, to be created for the period under review. So core and peripheral research areas are identified, along with their major contributors. The representation appears as a two-dimensional cluster-enhanced map. Subject expertise was then applied to the results to place labels on the generated clusters of authors and their topics

Après avoir accepté de le publier sous les auspices du CEDEJ, il en a suivi l’élaboration pas à pas, l’animant de son savoir, l’éclairant de sa compétence. Inventeur du temps, il a assumé la fastidieuse ordonnance de l’ouvrage en dépit d’exigences primordiales surgies au moment où chacun aspire au havre de la détente. Je dois aussi un grand merci à mes amis et collaborateurs Bernard Botiveau et Youssef Darwiche dont la haute technicité palliera, je l’espère, les desiderata de les connaissances juridiques au chapitre des procès. Dans un minutieux travail d’archiviste perspicace et sensible, Youssef Darwiche dépouilla les moindres écrits de presse recueillis par la Bibliothèque Nationale du Caire et d’Alexandrie et l’inextricable fouillis des dossiers enterrés à la Cour de Cassation, exhumant ainsi, ou plutôt ressuscitant dans sa forme mouvementée, le contexte historique et politique des deux procès qu’il a si parfaitement étudiés. Quoique sollicité à outrance par ses travaux d’islamologue, Bernard Botiveau a su trouver le loisir de rédiger un lumineux exposé d’une tranche importante des recherches sur la pénalisation de l’adultère qui fut l’une des préoccupations principales de la carrière de mon père et l’une de ses thèses majeures les plus discutées. Quant à Aly Badran, c’est sans arrêt que j’eux recours à sa connaissance approfondie de la langue arabe dont il avait pratiqué la traduction instantanée au profit de l’Unesco. Son inlassable patience ne se contenta pas de réponses téléphoniques réitérées et prolongées, il prit à plus d’une reprise la peine de se déranger pour venir m’aider à déchiffrer une impression délavée de journaux remontant à quatre-vingts années, reconstituant des phrases à demi effacées et ravivant même certains termes surannés. Je ne peux terminer ce chapitre de précieuses obligations et omettre celle dont je suis redevable à Myriam Hamamdjian pour la quasi inaltérable bonne grâce qu’elle apporta à mettre et remettre dans l’ordinateur les fragments, les corrections et les reprises d’un ouvrage bâti au fil des souvenances et des retrouvailles de documents ignorés. Je remercie d’avance et de grand cœur le lecteur qui s’intéressera à ce récit en marge d’une œuvre et d’une vie dont j’aimerais avoir un peu traduit la personnalité et la dignité. A. M. F. Andrée Morcos FahmyL'ouvrage évoque la figure de Morcos Fahmy, à travers la biographie que sa propre fille a rédigée. Le récit, reconstitution d'une carrière mêlée de souvenirs personnels et d'hommages, retrace la vie d'un avocat, de confession copte, membre du barreau durant l'entre-deux-guerres. Il reprend les principaux moments d'une existence, avec ses hauteurs et ses dépressions. Il met en relief le côté professionnel, les nombreuses affaires dont l'avocat s'est occupé, les causes qu'il a défendues. Il présente aussi l'engagement politique au lendemain de la première guerre mondiale, sans que cela débouche sur une affiliation partisane. Il dégage enfin le réformisme social d'un homme préoccupé du statut de la femme en Orient, comme de la pénalité de l'adultère. À travers l'étude d'un cas, se reconstituent moins une époque ou une société que des jeux d'influence entre individus, groupes. forces ; les interconnexions entre le juridique (civil et pénal), le politique, le social et le religieux ; les effets de miroirs entre passé et présent, personnage et portrait ou sujet et récitant. Ainsi une histoire individuelle s'inscrit-elle dans une histoire nationale..
