A genetic design technique for field correction systems in NMR devices

    No full text
The optimal design of a set of actual shimming coils for NMR magnets is addressed. The problem is firstly described in the framework of electromagnetic inverse problems and then regularized on the basis of feasibility considerations, in the limit of negligible cross sections. The effects of finite cross section are then introduced, and an assessment of the results is done. Finally, by employing a genetic, global optimisation technique, a broad range search in the parameters space is performed, leading to solutions not foreseen by the studies based on the thin coil assumption

RITMIčESKA PAMET I FORMALNI STRUKTURI (BELEŽKI V"RHU PROIZVEDENIJATA, PRIPISVANI NA EVFIMIJA)

The author went through some formal frames in texts written by the Serbian nun Euphemia, traditionally labelled as poetic works. Due to the lack of clear matrical patterns, an analysis on the basis of logical-syntactic scanning was performed. The scansion, as well as partial accentual regularity (isocolic constructions), showed a clear well organized rhetorical speech with several devices of an ornate prose style. The second work of Euphemia's, especially, revealed a rich phonical-rhytmical tissue

A Wavelet Based Neural Network Procedure for the Field Reconstruction of NMR Main Magnet

    No full text
A novel procedure to identify and correct the field inhomogeneities in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) devices is proposed. Instead of local field measurements, the procedure makes only use of the information supplied by the standard output (absorption spectrum) of the device to determine the correction field to be supplied to the magnet. The reconstruction of the actual field map starting from the spectrum is carried out by means of a Neural Network (NN) approach. The inputs of NN are, in turn, the moments of the spectrum or a pattern of features extracted by a wavelet pre-processor. The accuracy achieved in correcting the field is acceptable and the computational burden of the operation phases appears to be smaller with respect to other methods. The nature and shape of the wavelets are particularly suitable for treating the asborption spectra signal. The procedure promises to be a possible alternative tool to the frequently needed routine calibrations of the magnetic field in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance devices

Mercury contamination of riverine sediments in the vicinity of a mercury cell chlor-alkali plant in Sagua River, Cuba

    No full text
Sediment is a great indicator for assessing coastal mercury contamination. The objective of this study was to assess the magnitude of mercury pollution in the sediments of the Sagua River, Cuba, where a mercury-cell chlor-alkali plant has operated since the beginning of the 1980s. Surface sediments and a sediment core were collected in the Sagua River and analyzed for mercury using an Advanced Mercury Analyser (LECO AMA-254). Total mercury concentrations ranged from 0.165 to 97 μg g-1 dry weight surface sediments. Enrichment Factor (EF), Index of Geoaccumulation (Igeo) and Sediment Quality Guidelines were applied to calculate the degrees of sediment contamination. The EF showed the significant role of anthropogenic mercury inputs in sediments of the Sagua River. The result also determined that in all stations downstream from the chlor-alkali plant effluents, the mercury concentrations in the sediments were higher than the Probable Effect Levels value, indicating a high potential for adverse biological effects. The Igeo index indicated that the sediments in the Sagua River are evaluated as heavily polluted to extremely contaminated and should be remediated as a hazardous material. This study could provide the latest benchmark of mercury pollution and prove beneficial to future pollution studies in relation to monitoring works in sediments from tropical rivers and estuaries. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd
