Concentration in Knowledge Output: A case of Economics Journals
This paper assesses the degree of author concentration in seven economics journals, which were published in India during 1990-2002. To measure the degree of author concentration, Lotka's Law was used. Moreover, we also make an exploratory analysis of the geographic, economics subfield and institutional concentration in 704 economics journals. An important finding of this paper is that specialized journals in the sample report the highest degree of author concentration. This result is quite similar to the findings by Cox and Chung (1991). Furthermore, there are several instances showing that the journals lean towards certain norms; this may affect the flow of innovative ideas into economics. We conclude that a knowledge activity, involving the high degree of concentration and a biased publication process, may affect the flow of new ideas into the discipline.Concentration, Lotka's Law
Effect of leaf extract of Pongamia glabra (Vent.) (Fabaceae) on histological changes of fat body of Periplaneta americana (Linn.) adult male
The fat body of Periplaneta americana usually contains trophocytes, urocytes and mycetocytes. The fat body showed some marked changes in insects injected with a sublethal concentration of Pongamia glabra [P. pinnata] leaf extract (0.05 ml of 5% concentration) through the intra-peritoneal membrane. In treated insects, the lipid vacuoles of the trophocytes disintegrated, and swollen and irregular shaped nuclei were conspicuous. The mycetocytes decreased in size, and the urocytes mostly disintegrated..RE: 16 ref.; SC: ZA; HE; VE; CA; TR; PA; 0JSource type: Electronic(1) http://upei-resolver.asin-risa.ca?sid=SP:CABI&id=pmid:&id=&issn=0378-9519&isbn=&volume=21&issue=4&spage=355&pages=355-359&date=1997&title=Journal%20of%20Entomological%20Research&atitle=Effect%20of%20leaf%20extract%20of%20Pongamia%20glabra%20%28Vent.%29%20%28Fabaceae%29%20on%20histological%20changes%20of%20fat%20body%20of%20Periplaneta%20americana%20%28Linn.%29%20adult%20male.&aulast=Ramanathan&pid=%3Cauthor%3ERamanathan%2c%20B%3bRajasekarapandian%2c%20M%3bSelvi%20Sabhanayakam%3C%2Fauthor%3E%3CAN%3E19980505846%3C%2FAN%3E%3CDT%3EJournal%20article%3C%2FDT%3
Small-disturbance angle stability enhancement through direct load control - Part I - framework development
This paper is the first of a two-part paper on the application of selective direct control of loads for small-disturbance angle stability enhancement in power systems. The change in the utility business model and developments in enabling technologies open up new possibilities for power system reliability enhancement. This paper proposes preventive modulation of selected loads through direct control for small-disturbance angle stability enhancement. An analysis framework based on the structured singular value theory has been proposed in which the controllable load range at selected buses that satisfies the desired stability robustness performance criterion is determined. Two conceptually different approaches for analysis of load modulation have been presented. Results have been presented on an equivalent of the Western Electric Coordinating Council system in the second part of this paper.PT: J; CR: 6216063, US *CIGRE, 1999, TF380216 CIGRE *IEEE, 1992, 42151992 IEEE ANDERSON PM, 1994, POWER SYSTEM CONTROL BALAS GJ, 1993, ANAL SYNTHESIS TOOLB DJUKANOVIC M, 1998, IEEE T POWER SYST, V13, P1311 DJUKANOVIC M, 1999, IEEE T POWER SYST, V14, P635 DOYLE JC, 1982, P I EL ENG D, V129, P242 ETO J, 2002, P IEEE WINT POW M NE, P1002 HIRST E, 2002, NEW ENGLAND DEMAND R ILIC M, 2002, P IEEE WINT POW M NE KUECK J, 2003, CALIFORNIA ENERGY CO RAMANATHAN B, 2003, P N AM POW S ROLL OC SKOGESTAD S, 1998, MULTIVARIABLE FEEDBA YOUNG PM, 1993, THESIS CAL TECH PASA YU XC, 2001, IEEE T POWER SYST, V16, P456; NR: 16; TC: 0; J9: IEEE TRANS POWER SYST; PG: 9; GA: 039NOSource type: Electronic(1
Liberté / Liberty
This book is a typographic interpretation of the poem "Liberté" (1942) by Paul Éluard inspired by the surrealist graphic universe. To design this book, graphic designer Rathna Ramanathan immersed herself in the surrealist typographic productions of the Kandinsky Library at the Centre Pompidou: leaflets, posters, flyers and programs, anonymous or signed, constituting an extraordinary range of daring compositions. The author was inspired by this material and, more generally, by the surrealist spirit, to create her own graphic compositions in the service of the poem "Liberté", a masterpiece by Paul Éluard with a universal theme
Three-year experience of hypospadias surgery: Bracka′s method
This is the author′s experience of hypospadias reconstruction using Bracka′s technique (mainly) over a period of three years. A total of 98 procedures related to hypospadias were done in three years. The surgical technique is described. In the author′s hand, Bracka′s technique gives good result both functionally and in appearance. Its versatility enables its use in all types of hypospadias with consistently reproducible results with minimal complications. At the end of the second stage a circumcised penis with natural looking vertical slit neo-meatus at the apex of the glans is produced
MCLI (Murty Classical Library of India) Archive (Issues 1 through 4). A series of archival captures that document the process of designing the interiors of the Murty Classical Library of India for Harvard University Press.
Many important classical texts in Indian literature have never reached a global audience; others are becoming unavailable even to Indian readers. This strategic design project was commissioned by the Murty Library, with the aim of creating an accessible classical library to provide modern translations of important Indian texts available in print and online. Funded by a trust set up by the Indian industrialist Rohan Murty and overseen by Harvard University Press, Ramanathan set out to create a framework for the design of the printed book interiors, digital texts and Indic typography for jacket designs.
Ramanathan developed this series of ‘Archive’ publications as a method of sharing the research with the Murty/Harvard team of senior editors, translators, and the design and production team. These publications embed references to original Indic manuscripts alongside proposals for the visual identity and interface of future publications. Ramanathan is primary author and editor with two research assistants. Research was based on key subject areas: history of the book and printing in India, language and scripts of India, reading and reader interactions with texts and bilingual translations employing multi-script typography. The typesetting and design of bilingual Indic texts of such range and complexity is unprecedented in modern book design practice and poses many challenges that were addressed through three lines of enquiry. First, to establish a systematic bilingual book design for English translations of texts in ten different Indian languages and scripts grouped into four categories: North Brahmic (Sanskrit, Hindi, Gujarati, Bengali), South Brahmic (Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada), Perso-Arabic (Urdu) and Prakrit (Pali). Second, to accommodate two genres in the template design: poetry and prose. Third, as Indian texts do not use italics or bold, it was imperative to establish an Indic hierarchy and grammar through the application of typographic rules
I. New strategy for the synthesis of TMC-95A II. Selective ortho-substitution on substituted aryl rings III. Characterization of steroidal glycosides from easter lily
TMC-95A is a natural product which has demonstrated inhibition activity against the proteasomal pathway. Though its biological activity is proven, the total synthesis of the molecule is challenging in many ways. In this thesis the synthetic strategy taken for the partial synthesis of the northern fragment of the TMC-95A is described. Part of the synthetic studies on the northern fragment involves selective ortho substitution on the indole aromatic ring. It was successfully achieved by protecting the para position with a bromo substituent. This selective ortho substitution was studied further on simple aromatic compounds. Bromides and chlorides at the para position were selectively removed in the presence of sensitive functional groups, which allowed this method to be utilized for selective ortho substitution. Model studies on 3-methyloxindole were carried out as part of the TMC-95A project. Although the model study gave very different results as opposed to the TMC-95A tryptophan intermediates, the outcome was interesting and turned out to be a project on its own. The halogen substitution at the α-position and sequential conversion of the halide to hydroxyl group was an interesting discovery. Several arylsulfonylhydroxylamines were investigated for the synthesis of the 1-propynamie, which will be used in the preparation of the TMC-95A Z-enamide sidechain. It was discovered that an arylsulfonylhydroxylamine with a dodecyl chain dissolved in THF and ether solvents at lower temperatures. This property should allow for the in situ synthesis of 1-propynamine. Synthesis of a TMC-278 model compound was successfully accomplished in 3 steps. The key step was the coupling of the pyrimidine intermediate with an aniline, which was achieved after oxidizing the sulfide substituent on the aminopyrimidine substrate. In contrast to literature reports with hydroxypyrimidines, the coupling with the sulfide itself does not occur with aminopyrimidines. A collaborative project with the Gianfagna group in the Department of Plant Science ¬- characterization of saponin compounds isolated from a species of Easter Lily by NMR was also accomplished.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical referencesIncludes vitaby Ahalya Ramanatha
Gender dynamics in data collection on reproductive health: field experiences in Kerala, India
Reproductive health researchers tend to choose interviewers of the same sex as those interviewed. In many societies, it is considered unacceptable for men to interview women on topics of an intensely personal nature like sexuality or contraceptive use. In this paper, the author analyzes 21 interviews and 16 focus group discussions (FGDs) undertaken during a field study on the Quality of Services in the Indian Family Welfare Programs conducted in Kerala. The analysis was based on the model which identifies the principal participants in the interview as the respondent and the interviewer. In all these cases the contradiction between the gendered roles of the interviewer and interviewee are visible. However, if viewed in the context of the model provided by Briggs, it is clear that these contradictions are due to the differences in the social roles that the interviewers assumed and that the respondents ascribed to them and in the interactional goals of the interviewers and the respondents. Contradictions were also experienced during the FGDs. Educational sessions on contraception are a good tool for gathering sensitive information instead of the conventional interview, where the gendered roles are so crucial to the information gathering exercise itself
Folk author: Collaborations between folk artist and publisher, a Tara Books case study
This article refers to a specific case study, i.e. collaborations between folk artists and an independent publisher in India – Tara Books – with the purpose of creating book narratives. Central to this article is the concept of the folk artist as author and illustrator as well as that of the publishing process as a community effort. The article begins by reflecting on popular definitions of folk art with the aim of providing an understanding of ‘the function of folk’ in the Indian context. Using examples of two titles – The London Jungle Book (2004) and Following my Paintbrush (2010) – on which this author has worked in the role of book designer, the article examines and illustrates with visual examples the roles and nature of collaboration between folk artist, publisher and book designer. It looks at the development of a folk-art book from concept origin through to completion. The article explores the challenges of working with folk art within the constraints of a commercial book market and queries what place folk art conventions have in the context of communication design
