Flexible quasi-solid-state lithium-ion capacitors employing amorphous SiO2 nanospheres encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon shell as a high energy anode
Lithium-ion hybrid capacitors (LICs) take the advantage of simultaneous high energy – power output, and become increasingly important for next generation applications. Developing a high performing LICs with high energy-power-cycle combination remains a significant challenge due to low capacity intercalation electrodes, and kinetically sluggish alloying type electrodes. A strategy employing fast pseudocapacitive lithium ion storage in high-capacity alloying type anode, rather than a bulk storage, can output kinetically superior LICs with high energy even at high power conditions. Herein, we demonstrate a highly interconnected 3-dimensional (3D) SiO2 nanospheres embedded Nitrogen-doped carbon shell with fast lithium ion storage kinetics as high performing anode for LICs. As a result, LIC with a high energy (139 Wh kg−1), high power density (42 kW kg−1), and super stability (20,000 cycles) is obtained, outperforming previously studied alloying type metal oxide and sulfide anodes. A flexible LICs is further demonstrated which shows good stability under different bending conditions. The current research promotes the practical utilization of earth-abundant material as a high capacity and high rate electrode for the next-generation flexible and wearable devices. © 20201
A Series of Hybrid Multifunctional Interfaces as Artificial SEI Layer for Realizing Dendrite Free, and Long‐Life Sodium Metal Anodes
Sodium metal (Na) anodes are considered the most promising anode for high-energy-density sodium batteries because of their high capacity and low electrochemical potential. However, Na metal anode undergoes uncontrolled Na dendrite growth, and unstable solid electrolyte interphase layer (SEI) formation during cycling, leading to poor coulombic efficiency, and shorter lifespan. Herein, a series of Na-ion conductive alloy-type protective interface (Na-In, Na-Bi, Na-Zn, Na-Sn) is studied as an artificial SEI layer to address the issues. The hybrid Na-ion conducting SEI components over the Na-alloy can facilitate uniform Na deposition by regulating Na-ion flux with low overpotential. Furthermore, density functional study reveals that the lower surface energy of protective alloys relative to bare Na is the key factor for facilitating facile ion diffusion across the interface. Na metal with interface layer facilitates a highly reversible Na plating/stripping for approximate to 790 h, higher than pristine Na metal (100 h). The hybrid self-regulating protective layers exhibit a high mechanical flexibility to promote dendrite free Na plating even at high current density (5 mA cm(-2)), high capacity (10 mAh cm(-2)), and good performance with Na3V2(PO4)(3) cathode. The current study opens a new insight for designing dendrite Na metal anode for next generation energy storage devices.N
The Megala Allagia and the Tzaousios : Aspects of Provincial Military Organization in Late Byzantium
REB 47 1989 France p. 183-207
M.C. Bartusis, The Megala Allagia and the Tzaousios : Aspects of Provincial Military Organization in Late Byzantium. — After a survey of the use of the word allagion in the 13-15th centuries, the author argues that the Thessalonikaion, Serriotikon and Vizyetikon megala allagia were military units that included various types of soldiers and operated within large quasi-thematic regions during the second half of the 13th and first half of the 14th century. Further, the role of the tzaousios within a mega allagion is examined.Bartusis Mark C. The Megala Allagia and the Tzaousios : Aspects of Provincial Military Organization in Late Byzantium. Gender and Identity: Journalistic Perspectives on Wambui Otieno’s Struggle
The research examines how Wambui Otieno's court battle became a turning point in the fight against gender inequality and the depiction of women in Kenyan society. Journalists have described her as a strong woman leader who goes against male norms and her struggle for burial rights to bring attention to larger systemic misconducts women face. Her resistance to cultural norms that put women in subordinate roles makes it clear that women need more power in decision-making processes that are usually run by men. As a widow defending her claim against her husband's family, Wambui’s actions are seen as a brave break with tradition, representing the rights of women who are often ignored in male-dominated environments. Her combat brings to light the systemic barriers that keep women from being represented in societal and cultural systems. It starts a significant discussion on how gender, identity, and culture all have an emotional impact on each other. Journalists also play a dynamic part in this case to signify it in the newspaper and social media. The incident, which is mostly about Wambui’s determination and leadership, showed how a woman's stand became a sign of strength, women's rights, and the search for justice in postcolonial Africa. Grotesque Inversions On Stage, In Film: Horrid Yet Curious, Fascinating Yet Alarming
Grotesque theatre is not a genre but a style of theatre made up of many strands which has been employed over many centuries beginning in Ancient Greece, particularly with Aristophanes and moving through time to the present. François Rabelais recognised the grotesque in Church Feasts, Festivals, Guild performances, sotties and farces. This thesis investigates through theatre and film the seven strands Bakhtin identifies: grotesque image, abusive language, grotesque madness, scatalogical humour, light, reversals and the lower bodily stratum (1984, pp. 24-41). In particular the thesis traces inversions in both theatre and film. These two mediums have been selected to compare and contrast the use of the grotesque in each, as they share two strong commonalities in acting and the requirement of scripts.
Each chapter of this thesis deals with a script, and the last two chapters incorporate the use of a movie for contrast. The Introduction introduces the grotesque, offering an explanation of the styles of the grotesque as defined by Mikhail Bakhtin and Philip Thomson. Examples are shown in pictures. Chapter one explores two plays written by Eugene Ionesco: Amedée or How to Get Rid of It, and Rhinoceros. Chapter two moves back through time to Aristophanes' Lysistrata and explores the power women's bodies might have when men are in need. The third chapter investigates The Roaring Girl, written by Middleton and Dekker. This delves into the life of the character Moll Cutpurse and shows why Moll chose to dress as a man. Chapters four and five deal with the fantasy and the gothic elements in Frankenstein and Dracula respectively: focusing on bodily transformations; as well as the treatment of the monster and Dracula by society, and their treatment in turn of society.
The grotesque is an intriguing style of theatre because it deals essentially with human nature and the human body in its imperfect and ever-changing form. The grotesque therefore lends itself to horror, comedy and exaggeration making it a style which does not have to be limited by strict parameters. The grotesque can be successfully woven into other genres such as the gothic or the absurd giving it even greater dimensions in storytelling, staging and special effects. Human beings are often torn between the gory or visually disturbing whilst needing the safety of the normal and acceptable. The grotesque offers both, which can make a scintillating piece of entertainment by fulfilling our needs at both ends of the emotional spectrum. Grotesque theatre therefore by its very nature is a style which will continue to exist so long as it keeps its patrons in suspense
