Christy Moore and the Making of a Traditional Irish Rebel Song

    No full text
Between 1968 and 1998, the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland were divided by “the Troubles,” an ethno-nationalist conflict fought between paramilitary groups who sought to maintain Northern Ireland’s place in the United Kingdom or achieve independence through Irish reunification. Christy Moore (b. 1945), an Irish folk singer renowned for his outspoken protest songs, spent the Troubles performing at political rallies to protest the mistreatment of political prisoners under a regime of censorship that saw his music banned from the radio and an album release raided by special police forces. In this paper, I use newspaper articles, radio recordings, and interviews to argue that Christy Moore’s music came to be considered traditional because of his presence at political rallies, use of traditional instruments, references to events in Irish history in his lyrics, and radio bans, which supported narratives of oppression popular in nationalist music.Livingstone Undergraduate Research Award in HumanitiesTemple University. Constructing Spatial Narratives: Considerations and Practices Across Communities

    No full text
This panel considers how critical, innovative approaches with GIS draw our attention to new pathways of digital mapping. How can the practice of digital mapping within a critical lens produce new cartographies for spaces of possibility? How can spatial narratives restore the tarnished lineages of cultural geographies obscured from history? The projects represented on this panel are connected through a theoretical grounding that harnesses the power of imagining cultural recovery of landscape as a means of redress from historical obscurity. These projects represent a form of social justice that responds to how injustice is identified only through social memory; in this way mapping can contribute as an artifact of cultural restoration and catalyst for further action. link:https://vimeo.com/439454686 Christy Hyman- organizer, panelist Alli Crandell- panelist Sue Bergeron- panelist Jesse Rouse-panelist Shane Lynch- panelist Jamila Moore Pewu-panelist Hilary Green- discussant, Chai
