On the survivability and detectability of terrestrial meteorites on the moon
Materials blasted into space from the surface of early Earth may preserve a unique record of our planet's early surface environment. Armstrong et al. (2002) pointed out that such materials, in the form of terrestrial meteorites, may exist on the Moon and be of considerable astrobiological interest if biomarkers from early Earth are preserved within them. Here, we report results obtained via the AUTODYN hydrocode to calculate the peak pressures within terrestrial meteorites on the lunar surface to assess their likelihood of surviving the impact. Our results confirm the order-of-magnitude estimates of Armstrong et al. (2002) that substantial survivability is to be expected, especially in the case of relatively low velocity (ca. 2.5 km/s) or oblique (≤45°) impacts, or both. We outline possible mechanisms for locating such materials on the Moon and conclude that searching for them would be a scientifically valuable activity for future lunar exploration

Western oceanus procellarum as seen by c1xs on chandrayaan-1
We present the analysis of an X-ray fluorescence (XRF) observation of the western part of Oceanus Procellarum on the Moon’s nearside made by the Chandrayaan-1 X-ray Spectrometer on 10th February 2009. Through forward modelling of the X-ray spectra, we provide estimates of the MgO/SiO2 and Al2O3/SiO2 ratios for seven regions along the flare’s ground track. These results are combined with FeO and TiO2 contents derived from Clementine multispectral reflectance data in order to investigate the compositional diversity of this region of the Moon. The ground track observed consists mainly of low-Ti basaltic units, and the XRF data are largely consistent with this expectation. However, we obtain higher Al2O3/SiO2 ratios for these units than for most basalts in the Apollo sample collection. The widest compositional variation between the different lava flows is in wt% FeO content. A footprint that occurs in a predominantly highland region, immediately to the north of Oceanus Procellarum, has a composition that is consistent with mixing between low-Ti mare basaltic and more feldspathic regoliths. In contrast to some previous studies, we find no evidence for systematic differences in surface composition, as determined through X-ray and gamma-ray spectroscopy techniques
Flow patterns around longitudinal training dams
With the intention to reduce the negative effects of ongoing bed erosion, as well as to improve several other river functions such as protection against floods, provision of safe and efficient navigation and ecology, a ‘pilot project longitudinal training dams’ was initiated. The training dams have recently been implemented in the Waal between Tiel and Sind Andries. In this project, river groynes have been completely removed and replaced by dams that lie parallel to the river bank. With help of the longitudinal training dams, a two-channel river system is created in which the river is divided into a main and side channel. The dams are placed in a continuous manner with openings in between that are relatively small compared to the dam length. At the beginning and end of the dam an inlet and outlet region is situated, as shown in Fig. 1. The combination of inlet and openings allows for water and sediment to be divided between the main and the side channel. Both inlet and openings are constructed with the help of a porous rock-layer. The crest heights can be altered by adding or removing stones. This is expected to influence the amount of water and sediment entering the side channel and can therefore be used as a regulation tool.
