Pursuit-plunging by Northern Gannets (Sula bassana) feeding on Capelin (Mallotus villosus)

Northern gannets (Sula bassana) are considered to obtain prey usually by rapid, vertical, shallow plunge dives. In order to test this contention and investigate underwater foraging behaviour, we attached two types of data–logging systems to 11 parental northern gannets at Funk Island in the North–West Atlantic. We documented, for the first time to the authors' knowledge, gannets performing long, flat–bottomed, Ushaped dives that involved underwater wing propulsion as well as rapid, shallow, V–shaped dives. The median and maximum dive depths and durations were 4.6 and 22.0m and 8 and 38s, respectively. Short, shallow dives were usually V–shaped and dives deeper than 8m and longer than 10s were usually Ushaped, including a period at constant depth (varying between 4 and 28s with median 8s). Diving occurred throughout the daylight period and deepest dives were performed during late morning. On the basis of motion sensors in the loggers and food collections from telemetered birds, we concluded that extended, deep dives were directed at deep schools of capelin, a small pelagic fish, and we hypothesized that V–shaped dives were aimed at larger, pelagic fishes and squids. Furthermore, these V–shaped dives allowed the birds to surprise their pelagic prey and this may be critical because the maximum swimming speeds of the prey species may exceed the maximum dive speeds of the birds

There is great political and social pressure to reduce the pollution arising from food industrial activities who is heading the entire food area in a perspective of circular economy where food waste are recovered, recycled, requalificated and so converted from waste to resource. Among our laboratory research, two cases study of waste recycle were considerated, oil mill wastewater (OMW), and of spent coffee ground. Olive oil processing generates a large content of OMW, rich in inorganic compound, acids, sugars, phenols, raising several environmental issues. An olive vinegar was obtained in laboratory from the OMW and showed a high potential as functional food with good content of hydroxytyrosol and mineral compounds. Also a study of OMW acetification process in order to establish the best method to its preparation (alcoholic-acetous fermentation with yeast inoculum and the spontaneous acetification) was carried out. Both the methods have produced an acetic acid content around 4% (w/v) but spontaneous acetification has been more performant in relation to consumed sugars. In addition, this procedure given an irrelevant alcohol content and this suggests the acetogenesis was occurred bypassing the alcoholic fermentation. The spent coffee ground, usually discarded as organic waste, has still water, lipids (high concentrations of C16:0, C18:0 and C18:2), some aminoacids and volatile compounds (coffee aroma’s main compounds). This made it possible to development of a recovery system that allowed extracting simultaneously the fat fraction and volatile compounds using organic solvents and separating them from the solid residue. For each phase, new uses and formulations have been devised, including a coffee alcoholic drink from the hydro alcoholic extract, ingredients in the food sector or production of biogas from lipid fraction. Finally the solid residue defatted and dried was used for biopolymers formulation obtaining a biodegradable plastic

Zasady szacowania gruntów w postępowaniach scaleniowych w Polsce

The subject of the study was the principles of land estimation used for the purpose of consolidation proceedings, as they are applied in Poland. The work examines the legal conditions relating to the estimation of land for the purposes of consolidation. Documents prepared in the years 2005–2017 concerning land estimation (resolutions of the consolidation participants, and protocols from the value estimates) have been collected for 41 consolidated sites, located in 28 districts of 11 voivodships (regions). A survey was conducted among the surveyors-designers of the consolidation proceedings, consisting of 19 questions. In the current year, the co-author of the present article was present at meetings of consolidation proceedings’ participants, convened in order to determine the rules for estimating land value on two sites located in different regions, and the material she collected during those meetings was used in the article. The collected data were subjected to an analysis, which showed that within Poland there is no homogeneity in the method of estimating land value for the purpose of consolidation proceedings, and that the method used to determine the value of land, taking into account the 1-hectare estimated rate, and the price of 1dt of rye grain, according to the provisions of the agricultural tax, is incompatible with the principles for the valuation of agricultural real estate, as specified in the law on real estate management.

The paper attempts to analyse, as to how distance education mechanisms can be effectually used for sustainability in areas of the human environment, health and management of the natural resources. Short review of methodological experiences in education of knowledge-based society for common action with experts for promotion sustainable development is based on over 20 years activity in this field of the AGH Open University and the Open Seminars on Sustainable Development and ca. 40 years of informal, problem-solving education in linkage with interdisciplinary case studies. Further this model will be sustainable in terms of clean technology used, for the benefit of the human environment and better quality of life. The concept is related to long-term international cooperation of the Polish author (e.g. from 1983 with Indian scientists) on human ecology, medical elementology, ecotoxicology and biotechnology as well as future requirements of the National Open University in India.Artykuł stanowi próbę oceny możliwości zastosowania mechanizmów edukacji na odległość w celu skutecznej promocji zrównoważonych działań w dziedzinach środowiska człowieka, zdrowia i oszczędnej gospodarki zasobami przyrody. Nawiązuje on też do wieloletniej międzynarodowej współpracy polskiego współautora (m.in. od 1983 r. z indyjskimi naukowcami) w zakresie ekologii człowieka, elementologii medycznej, ekotoksykologii i biotechnologii oraz potrzeb rozwojowych Narodowego Uniwersytetu Otwartego w Indiach
