    Assessing bullfrog population size distribution in a wetland habitat at Montclair State University

    Bullfrogs (Lithobates catesbeianus) are a common apex predator amphibian whose habitat choices can help scientists understand health and environmental change from a top-down approach. This study investigates where bullfrogs and their tadpoles are found in the wetland habitat near Lot 45 at Montclair State University, and how factors like plant cover, water depth, and human activity affect their locations. Adult bullfrogs should prefer different areas than tadpoles with adult bullfrogs choosing deeper, open-water spaces for calling and feeding, while tadpoles stay concealed in the shallows. To test this idea, field survey sampling was conducted using visual, physical and audio evidence to estimate population size and rough location, and body size of tadpoles from different parts of the wetland was measured. We also measured water quality parameters.This research is important for understanding how amphibians survive, especially in urban areas like Montclair State University. Bullfrogs are opportunistic feeders, and they can survive in many different conditions. Because of this, studying them can give insight into how other, more fragile amphibians might survive in changing environments. This study is also easy to complete as it does not disturb the bullfrogs much, is affordable, and can be done with a small team. The results will help improve wetland conservation and provide a better understanding of how amphibians adjust to human-impacted environments

    Animal Biodiversity of a Former Quarry at Montclair State University

    Natural habitats play crucial roles in sustaining local biodiversity when located within urban ecosystems. These habitats offer refuge to animals that would otherwise not be able to survive in environments with high human presence. A former quarry site located inside Montclair State University fulfills those aforementioned roles. The quarry’s activity ended in the 1970s, and now this site contains two ponds and a small surrounding woodland. In this study we documented the animals at Montclair State University’s former quarry throughout different times of the year. Field observations were conducted weekly from the end of September 2022 to April 2023. The number of individuals for each species were recorded along with the weather conditions. Many of the animals observed consisted of common backyard bird species, such as blue jays and American robins. Mammal, reptile, amphibian, and invertebrate species were seen less often, which was to be expected as many species belonging to those groups were inactive during the day and Winter. Our species accumulation curve demonstrated that most species present during the Fall were detected. Towards the end of the Winter season little to no new species were being discovered but we expect to find additional species during the Spring. This is the first observational study of the local wildlife that inhabit Montclair State University’s abandoned quarry. Our new discoveries about this small ecosystem provide a baseline for additional research at this site

    Evaluation of mammal and herptile biodiversity at Montclair State University

    The Northeastern United States is an area experiencing environmental shifts and habitat loss due to anthropogenic activity. We surveyed mammal, reptile, and amphibian populations within the Montclair State University campus, ponds, and surrounding trails to evaluate current species composition, distribution and seasonal variations. Data collection spanned eight weeks divided into late winter and spring phases, using direct tracking, visual encounter, and auditory call surveys. Environmental factors such as temperature and humidity were recorded to assess their influence on animals’ activity. Out of the 61 mammals of New Jersey, 7 species have been identified to date. White tailed deer, cottontails and gray squirrels were seen active in both winter and spring, while hibernating mammals like groundhogs and chipmunk first appeared in late February. Red foxes and raccoons were encountered once. Of the 71 reptiles and amphibians, 3 species have been identified. We observed a pickerel frog, eastern painted turtle, adult bullfrogs, and large numbers of bullfrog tadpoles. We expect to see more species appear in the spring season and possibly witness the breeding cycle of amphibians. Our results contribute to understanding local biodiversity, species richness, and population density. They can be used to identify any major ecological changes that need to be addressed for wildlife conservation. The study is ongoing, and data collection will continue until mid-April

    Survey of raptors across the main campus of Montclair State University

    This study surveyed raptor species across three distinct habitat types on Montclair State University\u27s main campus in Montclair, New Jersey. The campus pond (wetland), Red Hawk Trail (forested), and NJ Transit Train Station (urbanized). Raptors serve as ecological indicators reflecting environmental health. Due to humans altering these habitats, monitoring these birds is crucial for conservation efforts. Surveys occurred five times per week over a semester, rotating between morning and midday observations lasting approximately one hour each. Surveys consisted of visual observations of raptor activity, such as, perching, foraging, or soaring. With spring migration happening at the same time as the study period, increased raptor sightings were anticipated. Each site gave insight into habitat preferences, species diversity, and behavioral patterns. Findings from this study aim to contribute to habitat quality assessments, inform campus wildlife management strategies, and promote citizen science engagement in urban ecological research

    Does Introductory Writing Instruction Help Students To Succeed At Montclair State University?

    This study examines whether Montclair State University (MSU) students who were placed into an introductory writing course between 2005 and 2009 later succeeded as measured by retention rates, academic advancement and available grade data. While available data was limited, retention rates and grade data suggest that most of these students have succeeded so far at MSU. The study also submitted an online survey to former introductory writing course students which asked whether they believe that their experience in that course was an actual contributing cause to their academic success. Survey responses of 68 students confirm that most believe the course made them stronger writers and helped them to succeed at MSU. In particular, these students say they learned a number of writing concepts and skills in the introductory course that were actually useful to them in other writing courses
