How to Measure the Green Façade Sustainability? A Proposal of a Technical Standard

AbstractDifferent guidelines drive EU countries to use greening systems – green roofs and green façades - as a sustainable strategy to maximize environmental buildings performance. While technical standards concerning green roofs are available, standards concerning green façades and particularly Living Wall Systems (LWSs) still missing. The paper deals with a research carried out in order to develop a proposal of a technical standard to be adopted as method and tool to measure the performances of green façades and LWSs according to a sustainable approach. The proposal was implemented in consistency to an Italian standard (UNI 11235:2015). The UNI 11235 contains the instructions for designing, building up, monitoring and maintaining the green roofs. Although the standard is not international some basic information may be applied at global scale and most importantly at green façades. The study was focused to setting-up a proper number of requirements to be met in: designing a LWS; defining guidelines for construction stage; monitoring the performance. Requirements and guidelines were set up according to a wide study on international references and thanks to an industrial research project where the authors were involved. Monitoring carried out on chamber tests and on-site was enabled to getting comprehensive data helpful for assessing environmental properties of LWSs and on the whole to characterizing some requirements to be used in the standard

The Turin 0rganising Committee for the XXth Olympic winter games (TOROC) appointed il Politecnico di Torino, . Dip. Scienze e Tecniche per I Processi di Insediamento (DlNSE) -under the direction of Prof. Gabriella Peretti and Prof. Mario Grosso - to evaluate the environnrental quality and compatibility of the projects included in the 0lympic programme. These projects concern land transformation and constructed assets, construction of new buildings, and refurbishment of old unused industrial and commercial structures. This report deals with environmental evaluation of projects at building and territorial scale

Several stakeholders (public and private) are paying an increasing interest about Green Walls and particularly about the Living Wall Systems (LWSs). The benefits of the use of vegetation in indoor environment, and in particular the use of Living Wall Systems, are demonstrated by the international scientific literature. Such benefits can be listed as follows: acoustic comfort, indoor air quality and dilution of pollutants, thermo hygrometric comfort, psycho-emotional well-being (improvement of cognitive skills, stress reduction and user satisfaction). During the last years, the LWS’ spread is confirmed by the increasing number of building featured by vegetation both on façades and on partitioning. Despite the interest about the vegetated technologies and their benefits, LWSs in Italy are seldom used. The reasons are referable to three main causes: high initial and maintenances costs; absence of scientific data about some properties; lack of economic incentives as well as of technical standards aimed at encouraging a wider use of such system. These standards are usually available in other European Countries. According to critical issues described, the paper outlines some research activities in order to assess the LWS’ environmental and economic sustainability. Particularly the paper deals with an industrial research carried out by the Department of Architecture and Design (DAD) of Politecnico di Torino. The research was aimed at developing an environmental friendly and low cost LWS. A Life Cycle Thinking approach was adopted in order to plan and assess the LWS over its life cycle. Furthermore, the paper describes a cooperation activity carried out by DAD and Growing Green. Growing Green is a small enterprise and a Politecnico di Torino’s start up. The collaborative programme was focused on implement-advanced methods and tools enable to perform social and environmental data according to scientific state of art. A proposal technical standard concerning the design as well as the proper construction and maintenance of LWSs is finally explained

Field surveys for the humanization in hospital buildings: tools and case studies

The international scientific literature supports the great interest to the evidence-based design, focused on the relationship between the spatial arrangement of hospital environment and the potential support to the healing process. According to this approach, the paper deals with field surveys in hospital departments of oncology; the research is aimed at evaluating the environmental perceived quality by the end users. The analysis carried out through questionnaires and interviews was useful to develop tools for the assessment of the relationship among environmental factors and psycho-emotional reactions and to validate the patients and staff’s needs
