FISH DIVERSITY AND SPECIES COMPOSITION IN DIFFERENT HABITATS IN THE 1ST, 2ND AND 3RD ORDER STREAMS OF KYUNJA GAD FROM GARHWAL HIMALAYA, INDIA
Present study has been conducted on spring-fed hill stream Kyunja from Rudraprayag District, Uttarakhand, India. In this work author proposed one novel approach viz., stream order wise study of distribution and diversity of fish fauna from Garhwal Himalaya, India. A Total 18 fish species (2 species in 1st order, 10 in 2nd and 16 in 3rd order stream) were recorded from Kyunja gad stream. The fish biodiversity recorded belongs to 4 families, 7 genera and 18 species. On the basis of economic importance fishes were divided into three groups, viz. major groups, minor groups and other groups. The hill spring fed stream was divided into 3 zones viz. 2 Rhithron and 1 Potamon zone for fish catch. The lower stretch (3rd order stream) was more diverse and productive and showed fish productivity of 34 CPPs (Calculated productivity points system- 16 fish species). The middle stretch (2nd order stream) showed productivity of 21 CPPs (10 fish species). The upper stretch (1st order stream) had lowest diversity and productive with fish productivity of 06 CPPs (02 fish species)
Development of a Health Technology Assessment Quality Appraisal Checklist (HTA-QAC) for India
OBJECTIVE: We aim to develop a comprehensive checklist for evaluating Health Technology Assessment (HTA) studies commissioned in India. The primary objective of this work is to capture all vital aspects of an HTA study in terms of conduct, reporting and quality. METHODOLOGY: The development of a quality appraisal checklist included 3 steps. First, a targeted review of the literature was done to gather information on existing HTA checklists. After reviewing these checklists, an initial draft of the HTA quality appraisal checklist (HTA-QAC) for India was prepared with discussion amongst the authors. Second, the draft checklist was reviewed by the members of the Technical Appraisal Committee (TAC) and their feedback was incorporated. Subsequently, the revised checklist was presented at a virtual meeting of the TAC. Finally, a pilot phase was undertaken to apply HTA-QAC for the approved HTA study reports. Three rounds of virtual discussions were held with the researchers who were involved in the conduct of these HTA studies to resolve any discordance in opinion or develop solutions for the problems in the use of the HTA-QAC followed by a further revision of the checklist. RESULTS: The HTA-QAC is divided into two parts: a self-reporting section to be completed by the author, and the other to be completed by the reviewer. The reviewer checklist has two sections: one to review the report and the other to review the model. The author section is in a self-reporting format, which includes details of basic study information, the rationale for the study, policy relevance, study description, study methods, reporting of model parameters, and results. The reviewer section of the checklist focuses on the quality aspect of the conducted study. The domains included in the report review include details on study methodology, results, discussion, and conclusion. The second part of the reviewer section of HTA-QAC constitutes a review of the model in terms of model assumptions, functionality, model inputs, calculations, uncertainty analysis, model output, and model validation. CONCLUSION: We recommend a standardised process of quality appraisal to ensure the high quality of HTA evidence for policy use in the Indian context. The proposed HTA-QAC will help authors to ensure standardised reporting, as well as allow reviewers to assess the quality of analysis. Trends and challenges for sustainable marine resource management for rural Solomon Islanders
Much has been claimed about the positive benefits of the customary marine tenure (CMT) system in the South Pacific and its implications for resource management. In Solomon Islands the premise of effective community-based resource management (CBRM) as a contemporary management tool, rests to a great degree on CMT, but does CMT still provide a sufficiently strong foundation to support this premise?
This research examines the social and environmental characteristics of two rural Solomon Islands coastal communities that have a long history in customary marine tenure; one with a strong chiefly system and the other one with a weaker chiefly system. The research gains insight into and an understanding of the experiences and lives of the villagers, given current debates on the need to address and move forward with the concept of CBRM with regards to the sustainability issues that they are currently confronting.
Using primarily qualitative methodologies the study focused on how marine resources are perceived and valued by different members of the community. The findings suggest that in communities where a common agreement on CMT no longer exists there is a significant challenge to stakeholders in attaining the goal of sustainably managed coastal marine resources through community based approaches. This challenge needs to be accounted for on a case by case basis as part of CBRM facilitation processes.
While this research may true for much of Solomon Islands, the case studies have revealed that although the villages are made up of families who are closely related they are not unified as a whole. Study findings suggest that the people retain a lingering vision of a small, integrated community but have failed to grasp how their differences as a community have affected their resource management outcomes.
The present day communities are affected by many outside factors that did not exist when traditional management systems were evolving. These factors bring management challenges for which traditional arrangements were not designed to cope and thus many have severely destabilising effects on the performance of traditional systems
