Saint-Maur en 1570. Les deux projets de Catherine de Médicis
No full textLittle is known about the nature and the extent of the work undertaken by Catherine de Medici at Saint-Maur on the little castle which she bought in 1563, but which had been built in 1541 by Philibert Delorme for the cardinal Du Bellay. Nor is there much information concerning the rôle of the architect in the work undertaken by the queen for finishing the extensions to the castle. Four hitherto unpublished contracts concerning the work executed in 1570 throw new light on évolution of the work and allow for a new dating of the campaigns defined by Monique Kitaeff in a recent study : one campaign falls within the context of a first project represented by the drawings in the British Museum of which Philibert Delorme would be the author, and which was begun under his direction (ca. 1563-August 1570) ; the other falls within the context of a second project represented by the plan published in 1579 by Du Cerceau {Les plus excellents bâtiments de France , II), begun in September 1570, after the abandonment and partial destruction of the extensions already executed. The realization of the second project was far from completion at the queen's death in 1589, as indicated by an engraving by Israël Sylvestre showing the castle receiving its finishing touches in the mid seventeenth century.On connaît mal la nature et l'étendue des travaux entrepris par Catherine de Médicis à Saint-Maur après qu'elle eut racheté en 1563 le petit château élevé à partir de 1541 par Philibert Delorme pour le cardinal Du Bellay, ni le rôle joué par l'architecte dans le chantier lancé par la reine pour l'achèvement et l'agrandissement du château. Quatre marchés inédits concernant des travaux exécutés en 1570 éclairent d'un jour nouveau le déroulement du chantier et autorisent une nouvelle datation des campagnes de travaux successives déterminées par Monique Kitaeff dans une récente étude : l'une, autour d'un premier projet représenté par des dessins au British Museum, dont Philibert Delorme serait l'auteur, et qui reçut sous sa direction un commencement d'exécution (env. 1563-août 1570) ; et l'autre, autour d'un second projet représenté par le plan publié en 1579 par Du Cerceau {Les plus excellents bâtiments de France , II), mis en œuvre dès septembre 1570, après l'abandon et la destruction en partie des travaux déjà exécutés. La réalisation de ce second projet était loin d'être terminée à la mort de la reine (1589), comme le prouve une gravure d'Israël Sylvestre montrant en cours l'état d'achèvement du château au milieu du XVIIIe siècle.Grodecki Catherine, Kitaeff Monique.
