    Optimizing plug-in electric vehicle charging in interaction with a small office building

    This paper considers the integration of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) in micro-grids. Extending a theoretical framework for mobile storage connection, the economic analysis here turns to the interactions of commuters and their driving behavior with office buildings. An illustrative example for a real office building is reported. The chosen system includes solar thermal, photovoltaic, combined heat and power generation as well as an array of plug-in electric vehicles with a combined aggregated capaci-ty of 864 kWh. With the benefit-sharing mechanism proposed here and idea-lized circumstances, estimated cost savings of 5% are possible. Different pricing schemes were applied which include flat rates, demand charges, as well as hourly variable final customer tariffs and their effects on the operation of intermittent storage were revealed and examined in detail. He also contributed columns to the Sharon Advocate and other local publications, and in 2002, his stories were collected in the book The Carnie Kid Tells All.     Benefits of Coordinating Plug-In Electric Vehicles in Electric Power Systems: Through Market Prices and Use-of-System Network Charges

    Both electric power systems and the transportation sector are essential constituents to modern life, enhancing social welfare, enabling economic prosperity and ultimately providing well-being to the people. However, to mitigate adverse climatological effects of emitting greenhouse gases, a rigorous de-carbonization of both industries has been set on the political agenda in many parts of the world. To this end, electrifying personal vehicles is believed to contribute to an affordable and reliable energy model that provides tolerable environmental impact. Representing an inherently flexible electricity demand, plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) promise to facilitate the integration of variable renewable energy sources. Yet, how should the PEVs' system usage be ideally coordinated for providing benefits to electric power systems in the presence of resource scarcity? The thesis develops a model of an aggregation agent as the interface to the wholesale electricity generators, which is envisaged to be in charge of procuring energy in electricity markets, exposed to uncertainty in prices, fleet availability and demand requirements. This aggregator could coordinate the PEV charging either with direct load control (DLC), i.e., sending power set points to the individual vehicles, or with indirect load control (ILC), i.e., by sending retail price signals. Contributing to the technical literature this thesis has on the one hand proposed a two-stage stochastic linear program for the PEV aggregator's day-ahead and balancing decisions with DLC over a large fleet of PEVs, while accounting for conditional value at risk in the objective function. On the other hand, it has put forward a formulation of ILC coordination as a bi-level optimization problem given by mathematical programming with equilibrium constraints, in which 1) the upper level decisions on retail tariffs and optimal bidding in electricity markets are subject to 2) the lower level client-side optimization of PEV charging schedules. These decisions may respect a potential discomfort that could arise when PEV users have to deviate from their preferred charging schedule.     Dialogue might be the most appropriate medium for reflections on translingualism. In a dialogue conducted by email over the course of ten days, Steven G. Kellman and Ilan Stavans consider the validity and implications of linguistic determinism. Their conversation examines whether some words that seem to embody the unique Weltanschaaung of a particular culture – such as Schadenfreude, duende, or mångata – can be appropriated, if not translated, into another culture. Pondering whether there are any inherent qualities that distinguish texts by monolingual writers such as Jane Austen and William Faulkner from work by authors who switch languages, such as Samuel Beckett and Vladimir Nabokov, they agree on the usefulness of thinking in terms of a translingual sensibility.     [Book Review] "Understanding street culture: Poverty, crime, youth, and cool" by J. Ilan

    In <i>Understanding Street Culture</i>, Jonathan Ilan analyzes one of the key areas of future concern for young people: how they engage in street culture and the links between street cultural practices and disparate forms of marginality, criminalization, poverty, transgression, and consumerism. Chapter 1 begins with an inquiry into street culture as concept and mode of theorization. The author contends that it is not “a form of ‘resistance’, but rather a posture of defiance” (21). The precise differences between these terms is not very clear, given that the definitions themselves tend to imply one another (resistance meaning refusal to comply and defiance meaning open resistance and disobedience). In the conclusion, however, Ilan does hint at how thinking about street culture as defiance is a more suitable conceptualization than as resistance, which ought to be “reserved for phenomena more overtly political in nature,” suggesting that “street culture generally channels the defiance of exclusion as opposed to practical action towards altering configurations of power” (174). Ilan’s analysis does not, however, elucidate precisely how defiance may be less political. Importantly, street culture is reconceptualized “as a spectrum running from stronger to weaker variants that ultimately provides a similar scheme for understanding the world” (23)

    The introduction of robotic process automation (RPA) has created an opportunity for humans to interact with bots. While the promise of RPA has been widely discussed, there are reports suggesting that firms struggle to benefit from RPA. Clearly, interactions between bots and humans do not always yield expected efficiencies and service improvements. However, it is not completely clear what such human-bot interactions entail and how these interactions are perceived by humans. Based on a case study at the Dutch KAS Bank, this paper presents three challenges faced by humans, and consequently the perspectives humans develop about bots and their abilities to perform work.
