Haas-Molnar Continued Fractions and Metric Diophantine Approximation.

Haas–Molnar maps are a family of maps of the unit interval introduced by A. Haas and D. Molnar. They include the regular continued fraction map and A. Renyi’s backward continued fraction map as important special cases. As shown by Haas and Molnar, it is possible to extend the theory of metric diophantine approximation, already well developed for the Gauss continued fraction map, to the class of Haas–Molnar maps. In particular, for a real number x, if (p n /q n )n≥1 denotes its sequence of regular continued fraction convergents, set θ n (x) = q 2n|x − p n /q n |, n = 1, 2.... The metric behaviour of the Cesàro averages of the sequence (θ n (x))n≥1 has been studied by a number of authors. Haas and Molnar have extended this study to the analogues of the sequence (θ n (x))n≥1 for the Haas–Molnar family of continued fraction expansions. In this paper we extend the study of (θkn(x))({\theta _{{k_n}}}(x))n≥1 for certain sequences (k n )n≥1, initiated by the second named author, to Haas–Molnar maps

Development of young talents in the (post)covid time: views of machinists

In the master\u27s thesis we deal with talent management. We aim to define the key concepts, explore the impacts on talent management, such as demography, technology and globalization, and present its practices: talent acquisition, development, and retention. We also dedicate a few words to the challenges, opportunities, and adjustments that the outbreak of covid-19 brought along. We later focus on addressing the development and in connection with it, retention of young talent within the company. In the empirical work, we explore the views of young machinists on the development of young talents. We were primarily interested in young mechanists’ definition of the meaning of talent, how the development and retention of talent are connected, which competencies young machinists and their companies are looking for, and which good development practices have been preserved or established in the (post)covid period. The research is based on a qualitative approach, namely on eleven interviews with young machinists, whose answers were analysed using the text analysis method. We find out that young machinists place more emphasis on experience and effort than on talent, that the development of talents is closely related to their retention, and that companies and young machinists are somewhat more inclined to acquire technical competencies, although at the same time they are aware of the importance of generic competencies. We explore how the development of young machinists during covid-19 was greatly limited or even temporarily stopped, but at the same time it was partly transformed into online versions

Some tetrahedron manifolds with Sol geometry and related groups

    No full text
We study a series of 2-generator Sol-manifolds depending on a positive integer n, introduced by Molnar and Szirmai. We construct them as tetrahedron manifolds and show that they are twofold coverings of the 3-sphere branched over specified links. Finally, we give a surgery description of the considered 3-manifolds; indeed, they can be obtained by n−2 and 0 Dehn surgeries along the components of the Whitehead link

Molnar on Truthmakers for Negative Truths

    No full text
Molnar argues that the problem of truthmakers for negative truths arises because we tend to accept four metaphysical principles that entail that all negative truths have positive truthmakers. This conclusion, however, already follows from only three of Molnar´s metaphysical principles. One purpose of this note is to set the record straight. I provide an alternative reading of two of Molnar´s principles on which they are all needed to derive the desired conclusion. Furthermore, according to Molnar, the four principles may be inconsistent. By themselves, however, they are not. The other purpose of this note is to propose some plausible further principles that, when added to the four metaphysical theses, entail a contradiction

Fiji's Women Rugby Players: Finding Motivation in a ‘Hostile’ Environment

    No full text
In the Pacific island country of Fiji, where men’s rugby union enjoys immense popularity as a ‘national’ sport and a pinnacle of indigenous masculinity, a small community of women have actively pursued the game since the late 1980s. Until recently, they received little institutional or public support, and faced negative social sanctions for playing the hyper-masculine sport. But the Fijiana, the women’s national team, have made remarkable accomplishments in the last few years, including their qualification, along with only 11 other countries in the world, for the 2016 Summer Olympics. These achievements have significantly increased institutional and public support, although club registration remains low and limited resources (compared to those available to men’s rugby) are allocated to the development of women’s rugby. Given both the historical challenges and the remarkable recent achievements of Fijian women rugby players, this chapter, based on a mixed-method study consisting of a questionnaire survey (n = 70) and focus group discussions (n = 12), explores their motivations for playing rugby and continued involvement in the game against adversities as well as the key obstacle
