A Methodology for Increasing Business Process Maturity in Public Sector

    Get PDF
Non-profit organizations such as public sector organizations have some specifics, which make renovation projects significantly different. It is clear that radical changes in the execution of business processes and in the organizational structures are not suitable for the public sector because they are not possible for many, also political, reasons. A business process change in public sector mostly means unification of business processes, automation of some activities and elimination of some unnecessary ones. Organizational changes are achievable only to a certain limit. Therefore classic business process renovation methodologies have to be adapted. The proposed methodology that is presented in the paper has been successfully applied in a process change project at one of the Slovene Ministries, which is presented as a case study. Activities, techniques, and tools are proposed for each of the six traditional business process change project’s stages. Problems and topics to which special attention has to be paid are also discussed.</jats:p

The Use of Reference Models in Business Process Renovation

Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems are often used by companies to automate and enhance their business processes. The capabilities of ERP systems can be described by best-practice reference models. The purpose of the article is to demonstrate the business process renovation approach with the use of reference models. Although the use of reference models brings many positive effects for business, they are still rarely used in Slovenian small and medium-sized companies. The reasons for this may be found in the reference models themselves as well as in project implementation methodologies. In the article a reference model based on Microsoft Dynamics NAV is suggested. The reference model is designed using upgraded BPMN notation with additional business objects, which help to describe the models in more detail.ERP solution, reference model, businessprocess renovation, Microsoft Dynamics NAV, BPMN

Using Process Maps for Simulation Modelling in Business Process Change Projects

    No full text
There are several techniques and tools that attempt to effectively represent different modelling perspectives according to business process modelling purpose and goals. One of widely used techniques for process modelling is process maps. The technique is based on flowcharts and one of its most important advantages, that is extremely important in early phases of business process change projects, is that models are easily understandable to all members of a project group. It is believed that this technique can provide only basic facilities in representing processes and is inappropriate for simulation. The main objective of this paper is to show that process maps have all elements required for simulation and that they have some other benefits, very important for business process renovation, that are discussed in the paper.</jats:p

The Impact of Business Process Orientation on Organizational Performance

    No full text
The extensive literature on business process management suggests that organizations can enhance their overall performance by adopting a process view of business. It has been shown in previous studies that the companies which have reached higher business process maturity level consistently outperform those that have not reached them. The paper presents the results of the empirical research that confirms the impact of business process orientation on organizational performance in transition economy by using structural equation modeling. The link is even stronger than in the original investigation. Besides that more detailed specification of organizational performance that includes non-financial performance measures has been used. The results show that business process orientation leads to better non-financial performance and indirectly to better financial performance.</jats:p

Information Transfer in Supply Chain Management

    No full text
The paper deals with integration of supply chains and specifically concentrates on the importance of distribution of information among various companies in the chain. It summarizes the most important concepts of supply chain management. Both technological changes and organizational improvements are essential for effective integration of supply chains. Therefore the paper shows how business process modelling can be used to analyze the existing processes and help in renovation and integration of those processes, with a special emphasis on an inter-organizational level. It is shown on a practical example, how sharing and strategic utilization of information in a supply chain can radically improve execution of vital business processes and help integrate processes in different companies. That leads to shorter cycle times, lower costs and inventory levels and better quality for the final customer.</jats:p

Adoption of Business Process Orientation Practices: Slovenian and Croatian Survey

Process orientation has been empirically linked to corporate performance. Several studies have shown that more process oriented companies perform better than less process oriented companies. Consequently, many researchers attempted to define what makes a company process oriented, which resulted in numerous frameworks and conceptualizations of process orientation. Based on concepts of business process orientation (BPO) the authors have developed and operationalised a concept of extended BPO to study its adoption in two countries, one EU member and one a candidate for EU membership (Slovenia and Croatia, respectively). Extensive field study has been carried out in these countries. The results of the analysis show that there are many statistically significant differences, namely companies in Slovenia have implemented process oriented practices to a higher degree than their counterparts in Croatia. The paper shows the main differences in BPO areas and practices.business process orientation, process orientation, maturity, empirical research, Croatia, Slovenia
