    Anxiety above the clouds

    No full text
The first in this series of Dr Cochrane clinical vignettes is based upon an overview of Cochrane Reviews that was published in the previous issue of Evidence-Based Child Health: Manassis K, Russell K, Newton AS: The Cochrane Library and the treatment on childhood and adolescent anxiety disorders: an overview of reviews. Evid-Based Child Health 2010, 5: 541–554. Dr Cochrane is a unique self-learning experience—the integration of Cochrane evidence with a quirky fictional story and multiple-choice questions provides readers with the opportunity to explore and understand the applicability of a Cochrane Review or Overview in a new way. In this series of fictional clinical vignettes, Dr Cochrane travels across time from the past century to the present day, to solve clinical problems using evidence from Cochrane Reviews. Read the associated article and/or listen to the Evidence-Based Child Health podcast available online at www.cochrane.org/podcasts/ and then test your knowledge with six multiple choice questions. You can find the answers to the questions on page 1547. In the next issue of Evidence-based Child Health, Dr Cochrane explores the evidence for chronic cough, based upon the Cochrane Overview available in this issue (Russell K, Chang AB, Foisy M, Thomson D, Williams K: The Cochrane Library and the Treatment of Chronic Cough in Children: An Overview of Reviews. Evid-Based Child Health 2010, 5: 1196–1205). Copyright © 2010 The Cochrane Collaboration. Published by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. The Cochrane Collaboratio

Medicina centrata sul paziente : uno strumento per ridurre la frequenza delle cause di malpractice?

    No full text
The possibility that a patient centred style could decrease the probability of malpractice claims will be discussed. We will examine the relationship between patient centred medicine and patient satisfaction; and the relationship between patient satisfaction and malpractice claims. We will also discuss the data in literature that demonstrate a direct link between the communication style of doctors and the number of instances they received

Modulation of brain tryptophan hydroxylase activity by brain tryptophan content

NECKERS, L. M., G. BIGGI0, E. MOJA AND J. L. MEEK: Modulation of brain tryptophan hydroxylase activity by brain tryptophan content. J. Pharmacol. Exp. Ther. 201: 110-116, 1977. Although hydroxylation oftryptophan (TP) is considered to be the rate-limiting step in serotonin synthesis, the mechanism whereby tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH) partici-pates in the regulation of serotonin synthesis is still in question. Since the brain TP concentration is probably near the Km for tryptophan hydroxylase, changes in brain TP content could affect the rate of its hydroxylation. However, it has not been established whether in vivo the activity ofTPH changes with changes in TP concentra-tion. In this paper we have made use of high pressure liquid chromatography coupled with fluorescence detection to measure TPH and TP in several brain nuclei and other regions of rat brain after treatments known to lower brain TP levels. Chlorimipra-mine, loading with neutral amino acids and a TP-deficient diet decreased the TP content of some, but not all, brain regions studied. Whenever TP content was de

Incidence of bullying and victimisation among adolescents in New Zealand

    No full text
Bullying and victimisation are highly prevalent among young people, and both bullies and victims exhibit negative outcomes (Stassen Berger, 2007). Adolescents are greatly involved in bullying and experience particularly adverse outcomes in comparison with children (Kim & Leventhal, 2008; Simon-Davies, 2011). Furthermore bullying phenomena are under-researched in New Zealand samples. This paper aims to describe the nature of bullying and victimisation in a large sample of New Zealand adolescents and compare the findings to results from international samples. Four types of bullying will be assessed: traditional bullying inside the school, traditional bullying outside the school, cyber bullying via text message and cyber bullying via the internet. The same four types of victimisation will also be assessed
