Control-Oriented modeling and validation of bicycle curve dynamics with focus on lateral tire parameters
Under the objective of modeling, simulating and controlling the dynamics of bicycles in dangerous situations, such as wheel slippage, an accurate tire model is essential. Especially the lateral tire behavior is crucial since it is fundamental for stability in both rectilinear and curve maneuvers. So far, various test bench measurements are available in literature that describe lateral tire forces and moments under different load, sideslip and camber angle. The most recent measurements that study the behavior of common bicycle tires that are still available on the market come to very different results, even for identical tires. Anyhow, test bench measurements almost always imply conditions that differ from field application of bicycles on actual road surface. The aim of this paper is to use lateral tire parameters extracted from literature and include them into a multibody model of lateral bicycle dynamics. The simulation result is then compared to measurements recorded in a realistic environment. Therefore a bicycle is equipped with sensors to provide a large set of relevant variables of lateral vehicle dynamics. The validation process identifies a set of tire parameters that allows good model accuracy. Also for different tires at different inflation pressure model validity can be shown using tire parameters extracted from test-bench measurements

An improved method for measuring red blood cell filterability
A new simple method for measuring red blood cell (RBC) filterability by weighing the amount of RBC filtered through micropore membranes is described. Red cell filterability by weighing (RCFW) is determined on washed RBC resuspended in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) at low (5%) hematocrit. The filtration step is performed using gravity alone and the amount of the filtered suspension is referred to the filtration of PBS alone through the same membrane. The new method shows a reproducibility better than that of the widely used Dormandy technique, with a lower coefficient of variation (5.3 vs. 7.2%) and a higher sensitivity to artificially hardened RBC
Semi-active suspension control on bicycles: Anti-dive during road excitation
Suspension systems on bicycles have a tendency to severe brake-induced dive-in, caused by the small wheelbase in combination with a high center of gravity. Semi-active dampers allow the implementation of anti-dive functionality, preventing this behavior. Experimental analysis has shown that this yields significant advantages during brake control on level surfaces. In the presence of additional road excitation, however, a strong conflict arises. A specific test case is a bump occurring while braking, when the damping is set to the hardest value in order to mitigate dive-in. A simulative analysis illustrates that especially the dynamic wheel load is affected, which during braking is safety critical. By simulation and experimental implementation it is shown that using a simple semi-active control rule a decent trade-off can be found. Finally, the influence of the actuator response time is evaluated
Assessing the Underground CO2 Storage Potential in a Highly Populated and Industrialized Area: The Case of Lombardia Region (Italy)
The paper is aimed to the assessment of the CO2 underground storage potential of Lombardia Region (Italy), one of the most populated and industrialized area of the Country. The study is intended to locate adequate sites for the potential application of carbon capture and geologic storage in deep underground formations.
The first part of the study concerns the evaluation and analysis of the mass of CO2 generated in Lombardia Region (the largest CO2 producer in Italy, with over 70 million metric tonnes per year of CO2 released in the atmosphere) by investigating both the localized sources (industry, power generation, etc.) and the diffused ones (transport, domestic heating, etc.). The second part of the study concerns the technical evaluation of the possibility to put into practice the geologic storage of CO2 in deep underground formations of Lombardia Region. Finally, the study reports some preliminary evaluation for the possible implementation of a CO2 storage pilot plant in the area. In particular, a potential candidate located in a deep saline aquifer has been identified, and its geological and hydrodynamic modelling has been extensively studied and analyzed. The investigated reservoir has a storage capacity of more than 370 million metric tonnes of CO2, corresponding to about 30 years of CO2 emissions produced by the main thermoelectric power plants located in the same area
