    Preservative-free IOP-lowering medications: potential advantages

Pharmacotherapy for glaucoma implies long-term instillations of IOP-lowering drugs. However, more glaucoma medications per day are required with time. In these cases, fixed-dose combinations containing several active ingredients are beneficial. Potential advantages of fixed-dose combinations include reduced costs, lower risk of washout, less instillations, reduced medication regimen complexity, and saved time. This results in better treatment compliance. Reduced preservative exposure is important as well. Many studies have demonstrated that preservatives induce local adverse reactions. Elimination or minimization of adverse reactions accompanying long-term glaucoma therapy is an important resource to improve treatment compliance and, therefore, to prevent vision loss and to maintain the quality of life. Hence, glaucoma patients may benefit from the avoidance of the addit ional risk of ocular surface disorders resulting from preservative exposure.     Management of root knot nematodes (Meloidogyne incognita) on cowpea with plant extracts

    Screen house experiment was conducted to test the efficacies of leaf powder of neem (Azadirachta indica), kassod tree (Cassia siamea), eucalyptus (Eucalyptus gigantea) and locust bean tree (Parkia biglobosa) in the management of Meloidogyne incognita on cowpea yield. In this study, 50g of each of the leaf powder was separately mixed with 4 kg of soil in a 25-cm diameter plastic pot. Non-amended pots served as the control. Cowpea seeds were sown in each pot and each seedling was inoculated with about 3000 freshly hatched juveniles of Meloidogyne incognita two weeks after sowing. The experiment was laid out in a completely randomised design with five replications. The obtained data were analysed using ANOVA and means, while the significance values were separated using the Duncan multiple test. The result of the study showed that all the treatments significantly (p<0.001) reduced root galling and nematode population, as well as improved plant growth and yield of cowpeas. Although all treatments were effective in reducing root galls and nematode population, application of Azadirachta indica leaf powder gave the highest reduction in root galls (0.293) and nematode population (24), followed by Cassia siamea, Eucalyptus gigantea and Parkia biglobosa. The findings recorded root galls and nematode population of 28.25 and 37.34, 29 and 48, and 30 and 53.34 respectively as compared to the control treatment, which recorded root galls of 107.75 and nematode population of 189.34

    Adapting authoritarianism: institutions and co-optation in Egypt and Syria

    This PhD thesis compares Egypt and Syria’s authoritarian political systems. While the tendency in social science political research treats Egypt and Syria as similarly authoritarian, this research emphasizes differences between the two systems with special reference to institutions and co-optation. Rather than reducibly understanding Egypt and Syria as sharing similar histories, institutional arrangements, or ascribing to the oft-repeated convention that “Syria is Egypt but 10 years behind,” this thesis focuses on how events and individual histories shaped each states current institutional strengthens and weaknesses. Specifically, it explains the how varying institutional politicization or de-politicization affects each state’s capabilities for co-opting elite and non-elite individuals. Beginning with a theoretical framework that considers the limited utility of democratization and transition theoretical approaches, the work underscores the persistence and durability of authoritarianism. Chapter two details the politicized institutional divergence between Egypt and Syria that began in the 1970s. Chapter three and four examines how institutional politicization or de-politicization affects elite and non-elite individual co-optation in Egypt and Syria. Chapter five discusses the study’s general conclusions and theoretical implications. This thesis’s argument is that Egypt and Syria co-opt elites and non-elites differently because of the varying degrees of institutional politicization in each governance system. Rather than view one country as more politically developed than the other, this work argues that Syria’s political institutions are more politicized than their Egyptian counterparts. Syria’s political arena is, thus, described as politicized-patrimonialism. Syria’s politicized-patrimonial arena produces uneven co-optation of elites and non-elites as they are diffused through competing institutions. Conversely, the Egyptian political arena remains highly personalized as weak institutions and individuals are manipulated and molded according to the president’s ruling clique. This is referred to as personalized-patrimonialism. As a consequence, Egypt’s political establishment demonstrates more flexibility in ad hoc altering and adapting its arena depending on the emergence of crises. This study’s theoretical implications suggest that, contrary to modernization and democratization theory’s adage that institutions lead to a political development, politicized institutions within a patrimonial order actually hinder regime adaptation because consensus is harder to achieve and maintain. It is within this context that Egypt’s de-politicized institutional framework advantages its top political elite. In this reading of Egyptian and Syrian politics, Egypt’s personalized political arena is more adaptable than Syria’s. These conclusions do not indicate that political reform is a process underway in either state

    The effect of simulated rain on the activity and uptake of imazapyr was studied on Mikania micrantha H.B.K. The activity of imazapyr was significantly increased both at high concentration of imazapyr and low volumes of staying. Imazapyr required at least six hours between herbicide application and onset of simulated rain to obtain wore than 50% control. Increasing the volume and intensity of simulated rain adversely affected the activity of imazapyr. Lowest percentage of control was obtained at 10 mm and 50 mm/h for volume and intensity of simulated rain respectively. Greater uptake of IfC-imazapyr was recorded in plants pretreated with simulated rain than those without exposure to simulated rain. Tzventy-four hours after treatment, uptake was 78.7% and 70.5% for those exposed to simulated rain and without simulated rain respectively

    Cracking potential of alkali-activated concrete ïnduced by autogenous shrinkage

    Alkali activated concrete (AAC) has not received broader industry acceptance, one reason of which lies in the uncertainties in the durability against shrinkage and potential cracking. Many studies reported that AAC exhibit larger autogenous shrinkage than OPC concrete. However, it is unable to deduce that AAC should show higher cracking potential than OPC concrete only based on the higher autogenous shrinkage of AAC. The cracking potential of concrete is determined by multiple factors including autogenous shrinkage, creep/relaxation, elastic modulus, and tensile properties of the concrete. However, very few studies have considered these parameters. Furthermore, the influence of precursors (e.g. slag or fly ash) on the cracking potential of AAC induced by autogenous shrinkage is also rarely studied. The aim of this study, therefore, is to investigate the autogenous shrinkage-induced cracking potential of slag and fly ash-based AAC. The free autogenous shrinkage of the specimens is measured by Autogenous Deformation Testing Machine (ADTM). The autogenous shrinkage-induced stress and cracking of the concrete under restraint condition is tracked by Thermal Stress Testing Machine (TSTM).     Isolation and identification of lactic acid bacteria from Indonesian fermented foods as ?-aminobutyric acid-producing bacteria

    ?-aminobutyric acid is the most abundant inhibitory neurotransmitter in brain and has various physiological functions. The aim of this study was to isolated and screened GABA-producing lactic acid bacteria originally from Indonesia. Twelve fermented foods were considered in this study and the ability of LAB as GABA-producing bacteria were analyzed using TLC cellulose plates and pre-staining chromatography method. Six isolates (IFK-10, IFK-11, IFK-12, FN-12, FN-14, FN-15) were able to convert MSG to GABA during 24 h of cultivation. Two strains IFK10 and IFK-11 showed the highest amount of GABA concentration i.e 2.68 and 2.06 mg/ml, respectively. These strains were identified as Lactobacillus plantarum IFK-10 and Pediococcus pentosaceus IFK-11. Two strains of LAB from Indonesian as GABA-producing bacteria have a promising prospect and could support the development of functional foods
