Cissus quadrangularis: A comprehensive review as an emerging biomaterial for periodontal regeneration
Cissus quadrangularis (CQ) is known for its use as a folk medicine for pharmacological properties such as antimicrobial, antiulcer, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, antihemorrhagic, antiallergic, antidiabetic, and antioxidant properties. It is known for its significant role in fracture healing and bone regeneration. To date, it is safe without any adverse effects when used within normal limits. It contains phytoconstituents such as carbohydrates, phytosterols, flavonoids, triterpenoids, glycosides, tannins, saponins, proteins, Vitamin C, alkaloids, and calcium. The alveolar bone is the tooth-supporting apparatus comprising the alveolar bone proper, cortical bone, crestal alveolar bone, and trabecular bone. Periodontal disease is a polymicrobial host immune-mediated inflammatory disease that destroys supporting structures of the teeth. Periodontal regeneration regenerates the lost periodontal structures. It can be using bone grafts. Periodontal tissue engineering is surging in regenerative medicine. It is a triad that includes cells, scaffolds, and growth factors that help to form newly aligned functional periodontal structures. Plant medicine is an alternative medicine that overcomes the side effects of modern medicine. Plant extracts can be used as bioactive scaffolds for regeneration. CQ can differentiate human-derived mesenchymal stem cells into osteoblast and regenerate bone. This review elaborates on the use of CQ as a bioactive compound for periodontal regeneration
TO DETERMINE THE EFFICACY OF 0.12%CHLORHEXIDINE MOUTHRINSES IN REDUCING VIABLE BACTERIAL COUNT IN DENTAL AEROSOLS WHEN USED AS A PREPROCEDURAL RINSE DURING THE PANDEMIC ERA -A PROSPECTIVE CLINICAL PILOT STUDY
Background: In dentistry , aerosols being the major concerns that brings about transmission of infectious agents and harmful to patients and dentists . Thus the vigilant use of barriers, appropriate immunisation procedures all could safeguard the dental fraternity from the ill effects of aerosols.
Aim: To Determine The Efficacy of 0.12% chlorhexidine mouth rinse as preprocedural rinse in reduction of bacterial aerosol contamination generated during Ultrasonic scaling in a closed operatory and compared with1% Povidone iodine rinse and without preprocedural rinse.
Materials and Methods: Thirty patients were selected from Department of Periodontics, Sree Balaji Dental College and Hospital, Chennai. The subjects were grouped into A -10 patients each receive 1% POVIDINE IODINE mouth rinse and Group B of 10 patients received 0.12% CHLORHEXIDINE mouth rinse respectively as a pre-procedural rinse. Group C 10 patients without preprocedural rinse. The aerosols produced by the ultrasonic unit were collected on blood agar plates placed at 8 standard positions around the dental chair. These plates were sent for microbiologic analysis for the assessment of bacterial Colony Forming Units (CFUs) was evaluated and statistically analysed.
Results: The significance of the study was both the mouthrinses reduced the bacterial colony forming units (CFUs) in aerosol samples. 0.12%Chlorhexidine mouth rinses were found to be superior to 1%Povidone iodine in reducing aerosolized bacteria when used preprocedurally.
Conclusion: The study highlights the efficacy of preprocedural mouth rinses , during any dental treatment which generates aerosols, reduces the risk of cross- contamination within the dental operatory
Two Different Methods for Collection of Gingival Crevicular Blood to Estimate Random Blood Glucose Levels—A Comparative Study
Mari's novel T shaped incision in frenotomy technique with bilateral pedicle flap- an aesthetic approach
Background: Aberrant frenum attachments often lead to mucogingival deformities, culminating in both functional impairments and aesthetic concerns. Traditional frenectomy procedures are associated with extensive incisions and resultant wound defects. To address these challenges, a novel T-shaped incision technique has been developed. This method enhances accessibility for removing vestibular and frenal attachments while creating a tripod layer of flaps, thereby promoting primary closure and improved blood supply for healing by primary intention. Case management: This innovative technique is particularly suited for managing frenum variations such as bifid frenum, persistent tectolabial frenum, double frenum, and wider frenum. The procedure involves crafting two horizontal and two converging parallel incisions that form a “T'' shape, facilitating effective fiber detachment. Bilateral pedicle flaps are then employed for primary closure, which concurrently enlarges the zone of attached gingiva. Conclusion: The T-shaped incision approach presents an advanced method for treating abnormal frenum attachments, ensuring efficient fiber separation and fostering healing by primary intention
In-silico study on biomolecules derived from Cissus quadrangularis towards anti-inflammation
Objective: CD 163 protein is a macrophage-specific protein and hemoglobin scavenger receptor. Elevated expression of CD 163 protein in macrophages is an important feature indicating that tissues are subjected to inflammation. It can be an effective diagnostic biomarker for inflammatory diseases like gingivitis and periodontitis. Cissus quadrangularis is used as a potent alternative medicine to control inflammation and heal fractured bones. It has high osteogenic potential by increasing osteoblast mineralization. Being a natural product with a wide range of benefits can lead to drug development for its high anti-inflammatory and anti-osteoporotic properties. Studies have shown that Cissus quadrangularis has significant anti-inflammatory potential and can be used as a potential target for therapeutic agents. The objective of the study is to explore the interaction of the phytonutrients derived from Cissus quadrangularis with CD 163 protein to establish the anti-inflammatory activity by in silico approach. Materials and methods: The biomolecules derived from the plant Cissus quadrangularis namely β-Sitosterol, luteolin, piceatannol, quadrangualrin, resveratrol, and tannins were subjected to molecular docking using Autodock of 4.0 PyRx software. Results: The study results showed drug-likeness and binding affinity between biologically active Cissus quadrangularis molecules against inflammation associated with CD 163 protein. Conclusion: It can be concluded that the biomolecules derived from Cissus quadrangularis exhibited anti-inflammatory potential and thus it can be further explored by invitro analysis in developing a new drug
