    Heutagogy approach using trello online learning on the critical thinking skills amongst students with different learning styles

    Trello online discussion has become one of the important strategies for the University Utara Malaysia Management Foundation Programme student to teach other students to think critically in conveying their ideas and become more proactive and creative in critical thinking subject. In a heutagogical approach, learners become highly autonomous and self-determined while learning online. They use Trello online discussion tool as self-determination learning. Trello enable the learners to use their capacity and capability with the goal of producing learners. Trello online learning was conducted to examine its effectiveness in enhancing macro critical thinking among active-reflective learning style. The students discuss and write their ideas in Trello. Ideas that are posted in Trello will be displayed in front of the class so that the entire learners in the class could see the given ideas. Paul's model was used to analyze learners' critical thinking in Trello online discussion

    By nature, lecturers have flaws or imperfections, and that also includes how they think. The right way of thinking does not mean how fast it can solve a problem as it will lead to a short-term decision, but it is more important how efficient and effective the alternatives are when making a decision. Lecturers sometimes become stereotyped, prejudiced, and heuristics (also known as cognitive bias). Their behaviour will lead the mind to have unfair and biased alternatives when handling students. These are considered a flaw of the mind as the mind influenced by the cause of irrational decision making. As a result, the decision made would not solve the problem entirely and have some defects in some aspects

    Operationalizing computerized testing in mathematics competition

    This chapter seeks to take a modest and yet formative approach in proposing computer-based test (CBT) as the inevitable next wave in digital assessment. The major section reports on the practical design of developing and administering CBT in a mathematics competition by HOTS educational innovation development (HEID) in a mathematics competition. This chapter describes the CBT developmental process undertaken by HEID, which focuses on constructing multiple-choice test items, administering CBT, and scoring the test. While CBT offers the possibility of improving assessment, the process of preparing items and conducting online competition have nevertheless encountered several challenges such as getting quality test items, school and teacher readiness, seat time in front of computer, computer compatibility, and internet speed. As with many other educational reforms at infancy, more research in the area of implementing CBT to facilitate international competitions is needed in landscaping the assessment platform of Education 4.0

    This article attempts to examine the effectiveness of the use of concept map cognitive strategies and cooperative learning to improve comprehension, short-term knowledge, and ability to solve a given problem based on the topics taught in the form of essay questions at the end of the lesson or test for Form Four History subject. This study also aims to see the difference in performance between male and female students who use concept map cognitive strategies and cooperative learning than male and female students who do not use cooperative learning. A total of 60 students from secondary schools in Penang were taken as a sample. This study used a quasi-experiment with a 2x2 factorial design involving t-test at a 0.05 significance level. The results showed that students who learn to use concept maps learning strategies and cooperative approach can improve performance achievement in the subject of history. Students not only can improve the understanding of the topic being taught, but also can use the new knowledge gained from cooperative learning to solve problems with more confidence. Therefore, learning using concept maps and cooperative strategy is proposed to be practiced in the teaching and learning of History subject in form 4

    The arrival of Indian laborers to Penang occurs rapidly during the British occupation. Many Indian workers were brought in by 1820s. The economic and social crisis in India have affected the demographics of Penang following the arrival of Indian labor in 19th century. Penang as Straits Settlements state was a well-known port in Southeast Asia. Labor from India was used by the British to develop the plantations of rubber, oil and transportation. There are various aspects that affect the lifestyle of Indian labor, such as politics, cultural belief, economic and social. However, this study focuses on the inclusion of Indian labor and migration patterns after the opening of Penang and social influences such as the caste system, economic activities such as plantation workesrs in the plantation sector which is practiced in India for Indian workers living in Penang. In addition to the caste problem, this study also explained injustice zamindar against the Indian labor. Reference for this article consists of oral sources, documents, manuscipt and books. The findings of this study show that before 1930, the influence of social (caste system) and employment practices in India still has an influence on Indian workers in Penang. The scope of this study includes the social impact of the caste system and the economy as well as Indian labor migration patterns involving agents working under the system of “indenture”and “kangani”. In conclusion, this article describes the social and economic impact from India against Indian in Penang before 1930

    Reading is one of the main literacy skills for second or foreign language learners to obtain knowledge.However one must not only be able to read, but one must also have good reading habits.Educators are confronted with a constant struggle to motivate students to learn in all content areas, including reading.This study concentrates on an investigation of the effects of reading aloud on students‟ reading performance particularly in English context.Acknowledging the importance of reading, this paper attempts to demonstrate that effect of Reading Aloud approach on students Reading Attitude (RA-RAT) is a viable method to improve students‟ English reading habits at initial stage.This study examined 80 Year 5 students‟ reading preferences and their responses towards the program as two criteria.A posttest: School Based Oral Assessment (SBOA), questionnaire, observation and interview were used for collecting data.The results indicated that there is effectiveness of reading aloud approach on the overall students‟ reading achievement, students‟ reading ability, as well as students‟ attitude towards reading aloud approach.The finding also shows there is significant difference in overall reading performance between male students in the experimental group who had participated in a reading aloud activity as compared to male students in the control grou

    PBwiki (Peanut Butter wiki) is an asynchronous online learning that integrates collaborative learning.By using this web-based software tool, students can create, add, remove and edit content in hypertext quickly and easily.In this paper, a study on the teachers’ pedagogical roles on students’ critical thinking skill in a PBwiki environment will be discussed.The students’ learning style (active or reflective learning style) as a moderating variable was investigated to identify whether PBwiki online learning influence their critical thinking in essay writing.A total of 120 Form Six (Grade 12) students from two high schools in Penang were involved in this 2x2 factorial quasi-experimental study.These students have to write and edit their essays in General Study’s subject with the assistance of pedagogical role online teachers (PROT).Felder and Soloman (2001) instrument were used to measure the moderating variable.Paul’s (1993) model were used to analyze student’s critical thinking in online General Studies essay writing.The findings shows that students who received the PROT treatment performed significantly better in critical thinking score and enhanced students’ critical thinking in General Studies essay writin
