Corporate social responsibility reporting amongst petrochemical firms in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA): practice and perception
No full textThe purpose of this study is to look into the disclosure of corporate social responsibility (CSRD) in the context of petrochemical companies in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). In doing so, it responds to a gap in the literature by addressing four main research questions including: 1) In the Saudi petrochemical companies' annual reports, what is the extent and nature of CSRD ?. 2) To what extent did CSRD increase in volume over the period 2012-2017 in the annual reports of the Saudi petrochemical companies? 3) What are the institutional drivers which may drive trends of CSR disclosure in KSA petrochemical sector? 4) What is the relationship between CSRD of petrochemical companies operating in KSA and firm performance? The study is the first to examine the Islamic context, particularly the link among CSRD and company performance in the context of the Saudi petrochemical sector to see how the study assess the patterns, drivers and implications of CSR disclosure in KSA petrochemical sector.
The study applied institutional theory to understand the drivers and pressures that may have the impact on CSRD trends by considering the multilevel forces to answer the aforementioned research questions relating to the practice and perception of CSRD in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Institutional theory is used to describe a broader aspect of an organisation form used to adopt legitimacy. However, the author focused on the multilevel model of Institutional Forces and the Drivers for KSA' Petrochemical Industry from the institutional theory angle. The Institutional Forces (Coercive, Memetic, and Normative) have demonstrated how pressures interact and interfere with each other at the same level and at times between several levels, as well as how the strength and influence of each pressure varies depending on the level in which it is placed. For instance, in the study the influence of institutional pressures was investigated at four distinct levels including the global industry, national, and company levels. At all the levels, three institutional pressures were evident. Sharia Law emerged as a coercive pressure at all the four levels. On the other hand, reporting initiative, as a mimetic pressure was evident across the levels. Ethics emerged as a normative force at all the levels. The most apparent conclusion is that the Islamic culture, which has its origins in Sharia law, has a significant impact on the petrochemical sector in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The extent and nature of CSRD in the sector was investigated by applying quantitative content analysis to the annual reports published by six sampled companies over the period 2012-2017. The resulting word counts gave an initial overview of general trends in overall CSRD and the four selected disclosure categories (environmental, social, human resources and products and services disclosure). These data were then subjected to descriptive, correlation and regression analysis to test the hypothesised link between CSRD and financial performance.
The quantitative findings revealed that all the sampled companies engaged in all four categories of disclosure, and that the volume of this disclosure rose over the study period. Furthermore, a significant positive link was found between CSRD and financial performance over six years, as measured in Return on Assets (ROA), Net Profit Margin (NPM) and Tobin's q. The analysis of the link between CSRD and ROA, NPM and TBQ showed that all the disclosure categories impacted on financial performance in different ways, with environmental and social disclosure having the greatest impact on ROA and environmental and human resources disclosure having the greatest impact on ROE. All disclosure categories were positively correlated with TBQ. The positive relationships help to assess the patterns, drivers and implications of CSRD disclosure in KSA petrochemical sector. The results thus support the hypothesis that there is a relationship between CSRD and financial performance over the period 2012 to 2017
Cigarette smoking among female students in five medical and nonmedical colleges

Methods: This is a type of cross-sectional study. A sample of 1,070 female students was selected by a nonrandom and convenient sampling method from five colleges (Medicine, Business and Administration, Computer Sciences, Education, and Languages and Translation) of King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. A self-administrated questionnaire was used to determine the personal, social, and educational characteristics of the respondents. In addition, questions about their smoking types, status, duration of smoking, knowledge about the ill effects of smoking, daily cigarette consumption, and reasons for quitting smoking were included. Results: The students' response rate was 85%. The prevalence of current smoking was 4.3% and 5.6% for cigarettes and water-pipes, respectively, whereas 3.9% of the participants were ex-smokers. The prevalence of current smoking was highest in the College of Business and Administration (10.81%) and lowest in the College of Medicine (0.86%). The majority (77%) of the smokers' parents (current and ex-smokers) were also smokers. More than half (54%) of the smokers started their smoking habit for entertainment, and 44.4% of the participants did not know that smoking causes serious health problems. The most common factors for quitting smoking were health concerns (54%), religious beliefs (29%), and parent's advice (17%). Conclusion: The study concludes that the prevalence of smoking varies in different subject streams and that family and friends have a great influence on individuals starting or stopping smoking. Extensive health education programs are needed to educate young women on the health hazards of smoking and help stop them from smoking. Modeling of Botnet Detection Using Chaotic Binary Pelican Optimization Algorithm With Deep Learning on Internet of Things Environment
No full textNowadays, there are ample amounts of Internet of Things (IoT) devices interconnected to the networks, and with technological improvement, cyberattacks and security threads, for example, botnets, are rapidly evolving and emerging with high-risk attacks. A botnet is a network of compromised devices that are controlled by cyber attackers, frequently employed to perform different cyberattacks. Such attack disrupts IoT evolution by disrupting services and networks for IoT devices. Detecting botnets in an IoT environment includes finding abnormal patterns or behaviors that might indicate the existence of these malicious networks. Several researchers have proposed deep learning (DL) and machine learning (ML) approaches for identifying and categorizing botnet attacks in the IoT platform. Therefore, this study introduces a Botnet Detection using the Chaotic Binary Pelican Optimization Algorithm with Deep Learning (BNT-CBPOADL) technique in the IoT environment. The main aim of the BNT-CBPOADL method lies in the correct detection and categorization of botnet attacks in the IoT environment. In the BNT-CBPOADL method, Z-score normalization is applied for pre-processing. Besides, the CBPOA technique is derived for feature selection. The convolutional variational autoencoder (CVAE) method is applied for botnet detection. At last, the arithmetical optimization algorithm (AOA) is employed for the optimal hyperparameter tuning of the CVAE algorithm. The experimental valuation of the BNT-CBPOADL technique is tested on a Bot-IoT database. The experimentation outcomes inferred the supremacy of the BNT-CBPOADL method over other existing techniques with maximum accuracy of 99.50%
A look at the diabetic patient compliance in Riyadh district
No full textThis study was undertaken to investigate the degree of compliance in diabetic patients in the Riyadh District. Data were collected from 170 patients randomly selected from different hospitals using a standard interviewing questionnaire. Eighty four percent of patients were Saudis and 67.6'S were females. The mean age was 71.1 ± 11.8 years and 44.1% were obese. The occurrence of diabetic complications was seen in 45.3^ of the study population. As far as compliance toward treatment is concerned, over half of the patients (60.6^) demonstrated poor compliance while 23.5% complied moderately and only 15.9% appear to be good compilers. Educational status and positive family history of diabetes proved to have significant influence on patients' compliance. On the contrary, over half of the patients have shown a good compliance towards dietary regimen with which age. educational status and family history of the disease have shown a significant impact (p <0.05). In conclusion, the significant degree of non- compliance among diabetics which has been revealed in the present work could be attributed to the combination of literacy and misunderstanding of nature and management of the disease

The notion of “Construction 4.0″ is considered in this study since it enables the greatest utilization of energy and architectural analysis. A case study and a method for building information modelling are used to analyze the concepts of green building. The case study building is represented as a parametric model using the Autodesk Revit platform with the original blueprints and data. Using Autodesk Insight 360, an energy analysis and comparison of optimization case study of the A-Block and Z-Block COMSATS Abbottabad, Pakistan is chosen. This study analyses an academic building's energy performance as a case study to reduce energy usage. By turning the building 360 degrees at 45-degree intervals and utilizing BIM to install energy-efficient construction materials, this study analyses the energy efficiency of an academic building. The average annual energy cost for blocks A and Z is decreased from 228 kWh/m2 to 160 kWh/m2 and 192 kWh/m2, respectively
Enhancing neurological disease diagnostics: fusion of deep transfer learning with optimization algorithm for acute brain stroke prediction using facial images
No full textAbstract Stroke is a main risk to life and fitness in current society, particularly in the aging population. Also, the stroke is recognized as a cerebrovascular accident. It contains a nervous illness, which can result from haemorrhage or ischemia of the brain veins, and regular mains to assorted motor and cognitive damages that cooperate with functionality. Screening for stroke comprises physical examination, history taking, and valuation of risk features like age or certain cardiovascular illnesses. Symptoms and signs of stroke include facial weakness. Even though computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are standard diagnosis techniques, artificial intelligence (AI) systems have been constructed based on these methods, which deliver fast detection. AI is gaining high attention and is being combined into numerous areas with medicine to enhance the accuracy of analysis and the quality of patient care. This paper proposes an enhancing neurological disease diagnostics fusion of transfer learning for acute brain stroke prediction using facial images (ENDDFTL-ABSPFI) method. The proposed ENDDFTL-ABSPFI method aims to enhance brain stroke detection and classification models using facial imaging. Initially, the image pre-processing stage applies the fuzzy-based median filter (FMF) model to eliminate the noise in input image data. Furthermore, fusion models such as Inception-V3 and EfficientNet-B0 perform the feature extraction. Moreover, the hybrid of convolutional neural network and bidirectional long short-term memory (CNN-BiLSTM) model is employed for the brain stroke classification process. Finally, the multi‐objective sailfish optimization (MOSFO)-based hyperparameter selection process is carried out to optimize the classification outcomes of the CNN-BiLSTM model. The simulation validation of the ENDDFTL-ABSPFI technique is investigated under the Kaggle dataset concerning various measures. The comparative evaluation of the ENDDFTL-ABSPFI technique portrayed a superior accuracy value of 98.60% over existing methods
Intelligent Intrusion Detection Using Arithmetic Optimization Enabled Density Based Clustering with Deep Learning
No full textRapid advancements in the internet and communication domains have led to a massive rise in the network size and the equivalent data. Consequently, several new attacks have been created and pose several challenging issues for network security. In addition, the intrusions can launch several attacks and can be handled by the use of intrusion detection system (IDS). Though several IDS models are available in the literature, there is still a need to improve the detection rate and decrease the false alarm rate. The recent developments of machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL)-based IDS systems are being deployed as possible solutions for effective intrusion detection. In this work, we propose an arithmetic optimization-enabled density-based clustering with deep learning (AOEDBC-DL) model for intelligent intrusion detection. The presented AOEDBC-DL technique follows a data clustering process to handle the massive quantity of network data traffic. To accomplish this, the AOEDBC-DL technique applied a density-based clustering technique and the initial set of clusters are initialized using the arithmetic optimization algorithm (AOA). In order to recognize and classify intrusions, a bidirectional long short term memory (BiLSTM) mechanism was exploited in this study. Eventually, the AOA was applied as a hyperparameter tuning procedure of the BiLSTM model. The experimental result analysis of the AOEDBC-DL algorithm was tested using benchmark IDS datasets. Extensive comparison studies highlighted the enhancements of the AOEDBC-DL technique over other existing approaches
Global variation in anastomosis and end colostomy formation following left-sided colorectal resection
No full text3427sinoneBackground: End colostomy rates following colorectal resection vary across institutions in high-income settings, being influenced by patient, disease, surgeon and system factors. This study aimed to assess global variation in end colostomy rates after left-sided colorectal resection. Methods: This study comprised an analysis of GlobalSurg-1 and-2 international, prospective, observational cohort studies (2014, 2016), including consecutive adult patients undergoing elective or emergency left-sided colorectal resection within discrete 2-week windows. Countries were grouped into high-, middle-and low-income tertiles according to the United Nations Human Development Index (HDI). Factors associated with colostomy formation versus primary anastomosis were explored using a multilevel, multivariable logistic regression model. Results: In total, 1635 patients from 242 hospitals in 57 countries undergoing left-sided colorectal resection were included: 113 (6·9 per cent) from low-HDI, 254 (15·5 per cent) from middle-HDI and 1268 (77·6 percent) from high-HDI countries. There was a higher proportion of patients with perforated disease (57·5, 40·9 and 35·4 per cent; P < 0·001) and subsequent use of end colostomy (52·2, 24·8 and 18·9 per cent; P < 0·001) in low-compared with middle-and high-HDI settings. The association with colostomy use in low-HDI settings persisted (odds ratio (OR) 3·20, 95 per cent c.i. 1·35 to 7·57; P = 0·008) after risk adjustment for malignant disease (OR 2·34, 1·65 to 3·32; P < 0·001), emergency surgery (OR 4·08, 2·73 to 6·10; P < 0·001), time to operation at least 48 h (OR 1·99, 1·28 to 3·09; P = 0·002) and disease perforation (OR 4·00, 2·81 to 5·69; P < 0·001). Global variation in anastomosis and end colostomy formation following left-sided colorectal resection
No full textnone3427noBackground: End colostomy rates following colorectal resection vary across institutions in high-income settings, being influenced by patient, disease, surgeon and system factors. This study aimed to assess global variation in end colostomy rates after left-sided colorectal resection. Methods: This study comprised an analysis of GlobalSurg-1 and-2 international, prospective, observational cohort studies (2014, 2016), including consecutive adult patients undergoing elective or emergency left-sided colorectal resection within discrete 2-week windows. Countries were grouped into high-, middle-and low-income tertiles according to the United Nations Human Development Index (HDI). Factors associated with colostomy formation versus primary anastomosis were explored using a multilevel, multivariable logistic regression model. Results: In total, 1635 patients from 242 hospitals in 57 countries undergoing left-sided colorectal resection were included: 113 (6·9 per cent) from low-HDI, 254 (15·5 per cent) from middle-HDI and 1268 (77·6 percent) from high-HDI countries. There was a higher proportion of patients with perforated disease (57·5, 40·9 and 35·4 per cent; P < 0·001) and subsequent use of end colostomy (52·2, 24·8 and 18·9 per cent; P < 0·001) in low-compared with middle-and high-HDI settings. The association with colostomy use in low-HDI settings persisted (odds ratio (OR) 3·20, 95 per cent c.i. 1·35 to 7·57; P = 0·008) after risk adjustment for malignant disease (OR 2·34, 1·65 to 3·32; P < 0·001), emergency surgery (OR 4·08, 2·73 to 6·10; P < 0·001), time to operation at least 48 h (OR 1·99, 1·28 to 3·09; P = 0·002) and disease perforation (OR 4·00, 2·81 to 5·69; P < 0·001). Conclusion: Global differences existed in the proportion of patients receiving end stomas after left-sided colorectal resection based on income, which went beyond case mix alone.noneGlasbey, James C; Bim-based energy analysis and optimization using insight 360 (case study)
No full textBuilding information modeling (BIM) is a modern data information platform and management tool that promotes the development of green buildings. In Pakistan, the building sector consumes more than 50 % of total energy consumption and it is growing at annual rates of 4.7 % and 2.5 % in household and commercial sectors, respectively. The energy problem is the biggest single economic drag on Pakistan, the Pakistan BIM Council (PBC) is attempting to implement BIM adoption in the construction industry. Using Autodesk Insight 360 and Green Building Studio, an energy analysis and optimization case study of A-Block COMSATS Abbottabad, Pakistan is chosen. This study explores the energy performance of an academic building as a case study in order to optimize energy use by rotating the building 360 degrees at 45-degree intervals and utilizing BIM to install energy-efficient construction materials. Existing academic buildings have lower energy use and annual cost savings. The annual energy and financial savings are 585.10 kWh and 550 $, respectively. Applying factors to energy analysis can result in improved conceptual design with good environmental effectiveness, thus assisting in the pursuit of environmental sustainability
