Multidimensional scaling approach for clustering electoral wards in Hampshire

    No full text
The aim of this research is to develop a methodology for clustering and classifying electoral wards in Hampshire on the basis of their social characteristics. To do this we use MDS analysis which makes it possible to present complex statistical data in graphical form, which can be easily understood by decision makers with little or no statistical knowledge. The technique facilitates the highlighting of pockets of relative deprivation by means of social maps, in such a way that similarities and dissimilarities between different areas can be emphasised. The data (variables) that are employed in this study are derived from the decimal population Census (1981). It is felt that there is a need for better socio-spatial reporting and data collecting in order to improve the range and quality of the data and therefore provide a more informative guide to combat the pockets of relative deprivation.</p
