Satellite-enabled interactive education: scenarios and systems architectures
There are specific sectors of the economy that can benefit from satellite-based tele-education. Areas, such as maritime and agriculture, share common needs for both broadband connectivity at remote geographical areas that cannot otherwise be covered, and for innovative content for tele-education purposes. Furthermore, each area has special requirements with regard to the type of content to be delivered. In this paper we propose a set of architectural designs and case scenarios that will realise such interactive end-to-end education systems based on satellite communications. Services requirements in this setting are also identified and discussed

A child of the Academy? : investigating Euclid's philosophical background
A prevalent idea among contemporary scholars is that Euclid belonged to, or was heavily influenced by the Platonic philosophical tradition. To a certain extent, this impression is not new; the quest for Euclid's philosophical background was probably triggered and enhanced by his late commentators, Greeks and Arabs, who appear confident that he had one. For instance, al-Qifti writes: 'Euclid...called the author of geometry, a philosopher of somewhat ancient date...' and al-Nadim in the Fihrist names Euclid as '...one of the mathematical philosophers...' Proclus, five centuries earlier than al-Nadim, was more specific: '[Euclid] was a follower of Plato by choice, and familiar with this philosophy'. In this paper, I propose to explore the extant accounts on Euclid's philosophical background. (Michalis Sialaros, University of London
Post - Independence Cypriot Dramaturgy (1960 Onwards)
How did playwriting evolve in Cyprus since independence (1960 and afterwards)? There is a systematic absence of studies on the subject. The author of this article analyzes the work of some of the most important playwrights of the period (Rina Katselli, Michalis Pitsillidis, Panos Ioannidis, Michalis Pasiardis and Yiorgos Neophytou) and describes their main carcteristics. Even though the writers of the 1960s continue to write in the naturalistic mode, others courageously follow more contemporary trends. How did playwriting evolve in Cyprus since independence (1960 and afterwards)?
Inverse identification of buffeting and self-excited wind loads on the hardanger bridge from acceleration data
The traditional wind load assessment for long-span bridges rely on assumed models for the wind field and aerodynamic coefficients from wind tunnel tests, which usually introduces some uncertainties. It is therefore desired to develop tools that can utilize full-scale vibration response data from existing bridges in order to study the wind loading in detail for in-situ conditions. This paper presents a novel case study of inverse identification of dynamic wind loads on the 1310 m long Hardanger bridge, a suspension bridge equipped with a network of accelerometers. The identification method used is an extented Kalman-type filter for joint input, state, and parameter estimation. A system model considering the still-air modes in addition to a quasi-steady submodel for the self-excited forces of the bridge is presente. The coefficients for self-excited lift and pitching moment are considered unknown and are jointly estimated with the buffeting forces.Dynamics of StructuresOffshore Engineerin
The Reader as Author and the Ontological Divide: Rome Total War™ and the Semiotic Process
The aim of this paper is to focus on some crucial problems concerning the understanding of the new cultural form called "computer games". There are affinities between most computer games (at least the most popular ones) and the literary or cinematic text in that a story of some sort is involved in all of them. In the comparison between cinema texts and computer games there is even the shared modality of an audiovisual mode of representation. However, there is a great deal of difference in the way the reader / viewer in literature and cinema and the player in computer games interacts with the respective text in question: modes of identification with characters, immersion in the fictional and game world, passive or more active degrees of interaction, etc. The question is whether semiotics as a viable methodology can assist in the explication of such textual relationships where the player (as reader of her text) assumes authorial characteristics and to what extent such activity affects the ontological status of player (as reader-cum- author) vis-a-vis the real / fictive gameworld. To limit my scope I elect to examine simulation and strategy games, also called "god-games", which offer an omniscient third-person point of view and a flat grid-like gameworld; in particular I focus on a strategy, turn based, simulation game, Rome Total War™, which offers an additional research parameter, that of History
Optimized design for grating-coupled waveguide-enhanced Raman spectroscopy
We report a new design optimization process for planar photonic waveguides applied to waveguide-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (WERS) that combines the optimization of both the surface intensity performance and the grating coupling efficiency. We consider the impact of film thickness on the grating coupling efficiency of two materials with different refractive indices, namely tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5) and silicon (Si). We propose a new figure-of-merit (FOM) that takes into account both the coupling efficiency and surface intensity dependence for Raman excitation on the film thickness. Our study shows that the optimum surface-sensitive waveguide thickness is thinner than the optimum coupling efficiency thickness for both material systems. As an example, for a tantalum pentoxide waveguide operating at 785 nm, our optimization strategy proposes a 20% increase in waveguide core thickness relative to the optimum surface-sensitive thickness to achieve the best performance in WERS applications. Art History and Karaoke: Six Hands and a Cheese Sandwich
We cannot precisely say what is not appropriation. Impossible to draw a categorical line. Appropriation is practiced everywhere and all the time, also by people who never have heard the word. As someone said before, no author has his complete meaning alone
