Synopsis:
THE GARDENER is a new tragi-comedy by Lab Ky Mo which examines the trafficking of illegal Vietnamese migrants into the UK to work on Cannabis farms, often as domestic slaves. When a boy is smuggled over from Vietnam, he finds himself locked inside a house in suburban England and forced to work as an urban ‘gardener’ – to look after and feed a house full of cannabis plants. He sees no one other than his minder whose job it is to look after and feed the boy – with nothing more imaginative than instant noodles. When the boy has the temerity to complain about his poor diet, it not only questions the dynamic of their prisoner/warder relationship but it also precipitates a chain of events that ultimately threatens their entire, closeted world.

"DISPLACED" A photographic Exhibition by LAB KY MO
In conjunction with REFUGEE WEEK, I present 3 projects focusing on refugees from across Europe. I did not knowingly search out refugee projects to exclusively work on. I only spotted connections and parallels between these three projects after the fact, for this exhibition. Certainly the tragedy of the Essex 39 moved me, as it did many others. However, I am unsure as to why I felt compelled to draw their portraits – maybe it was a way for me to process the unspeakable tragedy. Photographing refugees in Calais, France and Medyka, Poland introduced me to other displaced peoples on the move, this time face to face and in the flesh. Again, I am unsure as to why I felt the urge to take these portraits; I had to travel some distance in order to do so. Seeing these projects side by side makes me reflect on my own origin story – being the child of immigrants, maybe I am drawn to people on the move. Maybe by recording their portraits and stories, I am meditating on my own journey to where I am now
