TESSEI: The '7-Minute Miracle' (Part 2) - The Secret Behind Organisational Reform
Teruo Yabe; translation: Roman Ditzer
TESSEI is a subsidiary of East Japan Railway Company (JR-EAST) and responsible for the cleaning of the Shinkansen carriages at the Tokyo Station terminus – all in the space of just a few minutes before the trains set off again. During his time at TESSEI, the author succeeded in reforming the company and bringing about a revolution in its corporate culture. Along the way, it was possible to improve and consistently standardise the work processes - which resulted in impressive results. This article is a continuation of a previous publication on reform at TESSEI. The focus here is on management tools. The author argues that corporate reform requires both effective management tools and inspirational leadership. A successful manager masters both skills, always mindful of staff development.

This article is a rare example of a text written by a top manager looking back and describing his leadership philosophy and approach in a turn-around project
The demand of urban residents for the biodiversity conservation in U Minh Thuong National Park, Vietnam
The total economic value of biodiversity provides policy-makers reliable information to estimate welfare losses caused by biodiversity reductions and perform cost-benefit analysis of biodiversity conservation projects. Searching literature reviews on economic-valuation techniques, the contingent valuation (CV) method has been popularly applied to estimate the economic value of biodiversity. This approach is based on a hypothetical scenario in which respondents are requested through questionnaires to reveal their maximum willingness to pay (WTP) for biodiversity conservation. The article used CV to study the Mekong Delta urban households' preferences and their willingness to pay for the program of biodiversity conservation in U Minh Thuong National Park, one of the largest peat swamp forests in Vietnam. Logistic regression was used to predict the probability of respondents willing to pay for the conservation program. The mean WTP was calculated approximately VND16,510 (1.49) after excluding the protest zero and scenario rejecting respondents. Aggregately, Mekong Delta urban residents agreed to contribute about $10.97 million annually for the project of biodiversity conservation

Market Segmentation Analysis of Preferences for GM Derived Animal Foods in the UK
This paper undertakes a detailed market segmentation analysis of the demand for GM derived animal foods in the UK with the aim of illustrating how this analysis can provide distinct information that can assists in evaluating the welfare impacts of proposed changes to the EU's GM labelling policy. The specific modelling approach employed was the latent segment (LS) model which allows for the simultaneous determination and explanation of both segment membership and product choice. Based on psychometric and demographic variables as well as choice data, the LS model was able to identify three distinct and behaviourally consistent consumer segments. Further, the LS model was found to outperform alternative econometric approaches for accounting for preference heterogeneity. Finally, our analysis shows how it can yield distinct information over the segmented nature of the food market that can uniquely assist both European policy makers in designing GM labelling regimes and public awareness campaigns as well as the agricultural and food industry in developing pricing, marketing and new product development strategies.
