H. L. Mitchell papers, 1910-1977
This collection contains personal and professional materials relating to the life of H.L. Mitchell, co-founder of the Southern Tenant Farmer Union (STFU). Materials include correspondence, publicity materials, new clippings, and general union papers. Because Mr. Mitchell was a national organizer for the AFL/CIO, the papers cover a broad range of unions, including unions for workers in dairy fish, rice, and sugar. The National Farm Labor Union and the National Agricultural Workers Union are two of the unions included in the collections as successors to the STFU. Non-union topics include material from the National Sharecroppers Fund, Socialist Party, and information relating to lectures given by Mr. Mitchell at colleges and universities. The collection includes materials on the following political parties and union organizations: Southern Rural Welfare Association, Communist Party of the United States of America, Farm Security Administration, National Sharecroppers Fund, Southern Mutual Help Association, Works Progress Administration, Highlander and Hudson Labor Schools, Southern Tenant Farmers Union (including the National Farm Labor Union, the National Agricultural Workers Union, and the Association of Members and Friends - Historic STFU), AFL-CIO affiliate unions (including the Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butchers Workmen of North America, Union Local 300 of Metairie, Louisiana, Dairy Workers, Fisherman, Rice Workers, Sugar Workers, Tractor Drivers, and the United Farm Workers).UALR.0076 A-76

Harry Leland "Mitch" Mitchell was born in Halls, Tennessee, on June 14, 1906. He began farm work when he was eight years old, attending school during off-season. He was married in 1925 to Lyndell Carmack, with whom he had two sons and a daughter. He married Dorothy Dowe, an STFU officer, in 1951. Before founding the STFU, Mitchell worked as a sharecropper in Tennessee and Mississippi and ran a dry cleaning business in Tyronza, Arkansas from 1927 to 1934. The Southern Tenant Farmers Union was founded in Tyronza in July of 1934 by 18 men, 7 of them black and 11 white. As one of the first integrated unions, it represented the sharecroppers and tenant farmers of the South. Mr. Mitchell served as the executive secretary of STFU from 1934 to 1939 and 1941 to 1944. At its largest in 1938, the STFU had 31,000 members. Mr. Mitchell went on to serve as a national organizer and made numerous appearances at colleges and universities throughout the United States. H.L. Mitchell died August 1, 1989. Arrangement: Series I - (2 doc. boxes). Materials relating to personal and profession business and organizations not pertaining to specific labor unions. Performance Impairments in Single-Mode Radio-Over-Fiber Systems Due to MAC Constraints

Abstract:
This paper investigates performance impairments due to constraints imposed by the MAC layer when single-mode fiber (SMF) is used to extend the reach of an IEEE 802.11 network. It is shown that data throughput decreases as fiber length increases. It is also noted that the network fails long before physical layer limitations set in due to the timeout values defined within the MAC protocol. This study is based on both variants of the IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function. Moreover, both UDP and TCP packet transmissions are taken into account. An experimental enquiry is initially developed to provide a set of validation points before extending these results by simulations using the OPNET platform. Finally, an analytical approximation is presented to these results that allows designers of Radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems to quickly and accurately predict the data throughput given the specific parameters of their network. To our knowledge, this is the first analysis of this kind for a long reach fiber system

Architecture to integrate multiple PONs with long reach DWDM backhaul
This paper demonstrates the feasibility of an architecture that consolidates a number of deployed Passive Optical Network (PON) infrastructures into a long-reach, high-split ratio system which further increases equipment sharing between users. The demonstrated system allows the use of uncooled lasers with possible wavelength drift across a CWDM band (20 nm) with optical amplification and narrow optical filtering with no performance degradation. A complete study of potential implementations was performed with experimental results showing that a target performance of 10-10 could be achieved over 120 km of standard fiber with transmitter wavelengths from 1542 to 1558 nm and DWDM backhaul wavelengths from 1520 to 1535 nm. This gives the potential to support up to 2560 users
