    Performance comparison of blind and non-blind channel equalizers using artificial neural networks

    In digital communication systems, multipath propagation induces Inter Symbol Interference (ISI). To reduce the effect of ISI different channel equalization algorithms are used. Complex equalization algorithms allow for achieving the best performance but they do not meet the requirements for implementation of real-time detection at low complexity, thus limiting their application. In this paper, we present different blind and non-blind equalization structures based on Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) and, also, we analyze their complexity versus performance. Since the activation function at the output layer depends on the cost function with respect to the input, in the present work we use mean squared error as loss function for the output layer. The simulated network is based on multilayer feedforward perceptron ANN, which is trained by utilizing the error back-propagation algorithm. The weights of the network are updated in accordance with training of the network to improve the convergence speed. Simulation results demonstrate that the implementation of equalizers using ANN provides an upper hand over the performance and computational complexity with respect to conventional methods

    Shadow AI: Cyber Security Implications, Opportunities and Challenges in the Unseen Frontier

    The progression of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies has reached a level that greatly enhances the different organizational sectors by facilitating them with the means to advance and improve systems and processes. Shadow AI implies the usage of AI tools and systems by individuals within an entity, respectively, without permission thereby implying that these tools were not directly monitored or controlled by the centralized IT or security department. It also contributes to significant cyber risks such as data and security breaches, abuse of compliance, and, in general, an increased threat landscape. This paper highlights into the emerging global security trends and Shadow AI while also covering the unique positioning within the threat landscape concerning unauthorized computation of sensitive data, safety vulnerabilities of the unmonitored AI models, and model poisoning alongside data leakage-marked out. Moreover, this paper covers how Shadow AI distracts the attack landscape while increasing the level of security problem for the organization. Shadow AI, however, can be employed to increase the ability to respond to threats, locate irregularities, and increase the range of options available for cyber solutions even with all its risks

    Coffee and turmeric bio-based shape-stabilized composite PCMs for thermal and solar energy storage applications

    Bio-based shape-stabilized composite phase change materials (ss-PCMs) are emerging as sustainable solutions for thermal and solar energy harvesting. However, typical shape-stability issues, poor thermal/optical properties, and complex synthesis methods hinder the use of such materials at large scale. This study reports the design of nanofiller-loaded bio-based composite PCMs with enhanced thermo-optical and mechanical properties (shape-stability). Incorporating a 25 wt% biomass-derived porous matrix (coffee/turmeric powder) significantly enhanced the material's structural integrity by effectively controlling PCM leakage while achieving a high latent thermal energy storage (TES) capacity of ~130 J/g. Graphene-loaded ss-composite PCMs demonstrated a significant photothermal conversion efficiency enhancement (106 %) and effective thermal management (TM) potential (superheat degree reduced by ~10 deg C) compared to pristine PCM, due to the improved photo-thermal properties and power density. Thermal cycling (up to 500 cycles) and load-bearing capacity tests (~212,566 and ~31,242 N/m2 across the phase transition zone) confirm the high reliability of the proposed novel ss-composite PCMs in terms of thermal and shape stability. These results highlight their strong potential for long-term TES applications, with stable performance even under adverse environmental conditions such as humidity and wetting. This research contributes to the design of bio-compatible (possibly edible) substance-based strategies for creating cost-effective composite PCMs with enhanced thermo-optical and shape stability characteristics, offering significant advancement for latent TES systems and TM technologies

    Assessment of Cardiovascular System Abnormalities in Patients with Advanced Primary Hyperparathyroidism by Detailed Echocardiographic Analysis: A Prospective Study

    ABSTRACT Aim Recognizing the paucity of data regarding the incidence of cardiovascular abnormalities in severe primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT), a prospective study was done for left ventricular (LV) systolic and diastolic function by echocardiography in patients with hyperparathyroidism (HPT) before surgery. Materials and methods A total of 18 consecutive patients with HPT and an equal number of age- and sex-matched controls were studied by two-dimensional and Doppler echocardiography. Results Patients with HPT had higher systolic and diastolic blood pressures (BPs). Despite severe bone disease, nephropathy, and vitamin D deficiency, none had metastatic calcification in myocardium. There was no significant increase in LV systolic dimensions and volume, but decreased ejection fraction (EF) and significant diastolic dysfunction were observed. Conclusion Despite an asymptomatic cardiac status, there were decreased EF and significant diastolic dysfunction.
