In Vitro Susceptibility Testing of Aspergillus and Non-Aspergillus Filamentous Moulds to Antifungal Agents: Evaluation of Three Different Methods
Abstract Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the suitability of Sensititre YeastOne (SYO) method for susceptibility profiles' determination of non-Aspergillus moulds and of E-test for Aspergillus spp. and non-Aspergillus moulds, in comparison with the M38-A reference broth microdilution (BMD) method. Material and Methods: A total of 33 clinical isolates of filamentous fungi were tested. Results: The agreement between E-test and BMD at ± 2 dilutions was 82.4%, 83.3% and 82.4% for amphotericin B, itraconazole and voriconazole, respectively. The agreement between SYO and BMD at ± 2 dilutions was 76.5%, 66.7% and 88.2% for amphotericin B, itraconazole and voriconazole, respectively. The majority of differing results are due to higher MICs with the reference method. In particular, SYO was unable to detect some of the potentially amphotericin B resistant strains. We found that both E-test and SYO method were reproducible and served as suitable methods for antifungal susceptibility testing of moulds. Conclusion: In conclusion, both E-test and SYO method are promising, but require further investigation to identify the optimum conditions for their use in testing of susceptibility profiles of filamentous fungi to antifungal agents
The Landscape of the Mind: A Conversation with Bernard Tschumi
Bernard Tschumi, a world-leading architect, author and theorist is in discussion with Gordana Korolija Fontana-Giusti. The conversation that took place in Tschumi ‘s Manhattan office explores the nature and various aspects of contemporary cities in Europe and America focusing on the reasons why they are still different, despite appearances and global tendencies. The collocutors acknowledge the role of different histories and contexts, and the effects of distinct urban and transient spaces. They highlight the roles of diverse phenomena such as the conceptual art, the writings of radical thinkers, 1960s student protests and other events. They revisit the interplay between architecture and philosophy in the work of Michel Foucault and Jacques Derrida among others, focusing on the concepts such as ‘space’, ‘event’, ‘programme’, ‘power’ and ‘deconstruction’. During the course of their dialogue various landscapes of the mind emerge
Publication ethics: The editor-author relationship
Publication is considered the end point of the research project. New scientific results may be assessed, corrected and further developed by the scientific community only if they are published. Guidelines on responsible research and publication are now set, to encourage and promote high ethical standards in the conduct of research and in biomedical publications. They address various aspects of the research and publishing including duties of editors and authorship determination. This paper brings a short survey of editor-author relationship in the process of publication
Featured topic: A silent judge of art – friar Vinko Fulgencije Fugošić (1916–2003) - Summary
The fact is that it has been too little said, written, or rather thought about uncle friar, i.e. Vinko Fugošić, a Franciscan, an artist and a travel writer. He himself appreciated the silence and didn’t let himself get carried away by titles, achievements and performances. Nevertheless, the man, who has left his mark by brush, pen or word in virtually every church and chapel on the island of Krk as well as in many other sacred constructions throughout the Adriatic area, deserves something more than just silence. He was the silent type, he was an artist, passing judgments only and just in the field of art – which earned him his another name: a silent judge of art. Friar Vinko Fulgencije Fugošić (Gostinjac, 19th July 1916 – Crikvenica, 2nd August 2003) was known to broader public mainly as a visual artist, a master of portraits and landscapes, the author of ideas for numerous church interiors, finally as a (travel) writer. Therefore, in this set of featured articles Tomislav Galović and Perica Dujmović deal with his figure and work from the scholarly perspective whereas Gordana Gržetić depicts friar Vinko solely as a human being as seen through testimonies and memories. In addition to an outline of friar Vinko’s life and work, the following pages offer also lesser known details from his childhood, youth and the environment he grew up in, and memories of individuals who had shared this and that period of his life with him
Cluster algebras of infinite rank
Holm and Jørgensen have shown the existence of a cluster structure on a certain category D that shares many properties with finite type A cluster categories and that can be fruitfully considered as an infinite analogue of these. In this work we determine fully the combinatorics of this cluster structure and show that these are the cluster combinatorics of cluster algebras of infinite rank. That is, the clusters of these algebras contain infinitely many variables, although one is only permitted to make finite sequences of mutations. The cluster combinatorics of the category D are described by triangulations of an ∞-gon and we see that these have a natural correspondence with the behaviour of Plücker coordinates in the coordinate ring of a doubly-infinite Grassmannian, and hence the latter is where a concrete realization of these cluster algebra structures may be found. We also give the quantum analogue of these results, generalising work of the first author and Launois. An appendix by Michael Groechenig provides a construction of the coordinate ring of interest here, generalizing the well-known scheme-theoretic constructions for Grassmannians of finite-dimensional vector spaces
