    The importance of having data-sets.

    No full text
Much scientific research is based on the gathering and analysis of measurement data. Scientific data-sets are, at least, intermediate results in many scientific research projects. For some time data-sets weren’t even published and even if they were published it was mostly as a (not re-usable) by-product of the publication. But an interesting phenomenon might be observed here: data-sets (often in combination with models and parameters) are becoming more important themselves and can sometimes be seen as the primary intellectual output of the research. Publishing and preserving data-sets should therefore seriously be considered. This will especially be the case if the data cannot be reproduced (as they result from unique events) and will be necessary in the future for longitudinal research or to test or check future insights

As time progressed, bridges that were rated using the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) analytical load rating methods began to show lower load capacities than those that the bridges have proven to carry through load testing alternatives. This is especially true for reinforced concrete (RC) slab bridges which have complicated load path distributions and often benefit from load tests. This has resulted in unnecessary roadway restrictions, bridge closures, and other inconveniences to the communities that rely on these bridges for daily commute. Consequently, to provide better accuracy, the AASHTO Manual for Bridge Evaluation (MBE) offers the option of conducting load rating using field testing as an alternative to analytical computing rating factors for bridges. In this study, diagnostic and proof load field tests are performed on two RC slab bridges to study the feasibility and constraints of using bridge load testing as a load rating method. AASHTO MBE and Effective Strip Width (EW) load rating approaches are used to compare results with AASHTO analytical load rating procedures. The results demonstrate the advantages to load testing over less reliable analytical load rating procedures. To reduce the complexity, time, and cost associated with instrumenting bridges for load testing, the study explores the feasibility of performing load tests using image-based techniques. Images of loaded bridges captured using consumer-grade cameras are used to monitor the displacement of the bridges during testing. The results from the field and laboratory studies show compelling results when compared to conventional Linear Variable Differential Transformer (LVDT) sensors. Furthermore, the studies show that image-based bridge monitoring techniques have great potential in conducting quick and cost-effective field-based load ratings of bridges. The research also investigates alternative approaches to field tests for structural monitoring of bridges. A satellite image-based technique is explored to evaluate the potential of this technology to measure small displacements in bridges. Moreover, the technique is applied to three different bridges to validate the approach and the simplicity of its application for bridge monitoring. The results show promising potential in the method to be used as a structural health monitoring strategy for bridges

Abstract: In this dissertation we conducted a case study in order to reflect on the social movement process of a literary work in the early twentieth century, taking as object the reception criticizes the novel Memories Registrar Isaias Caminha, Lima Barreto (1881 -1922). Both the construction of our object of research on the choice of the novel in question were carried out during the development of our empirical research before directed to research the relationship between science and literature in the life of that writer. It happens that the interest on the case of Memories came when we began to investigate the process of intellectual insertion of Lima Barreto and its relation to the way in which his works were received by his contemporary critics. In this sense, the critical reception of Memories in required special attention: First, because it is the work with which Lima Barreto chose to launch his writing career; second, because this attempt to launch and state were established in three corresponding to the work publications times (1907, 1909, 1917); third, because the last edition of the work was funded by the author, as it seems to have made an author's reaction to the way his novel had been read and suitable for its contemporary interpreters. In this sense, the main question of our research interest revolves around the tense negotiation process between cultural producers who held different positions in the world of letters, and the corresponding editions of the work in question. Lima Barreto not exempted to participate in the different stages of this process of negotiation and dialogues with different agents, and strategies exercised by him around the dispute over the valuation of his work takes a heuristic character for understanding that process. We use primary sources such as diaries, correspondence, and chronic writer's works as well as the periodicals of the time in order to recapitulate the stages of that negotiation. Finally, we focus on the agencies of the various cultural producers involved in that process and in particular the Lima Barreto, in order to understand to what extent the public sense of a work is built on dissent on the type of valuation (social, polítical , literary) possible to be awarded. The objective of the present research was the study of tassel characters (weight, lenght and number of branches) in maize and their relationship with plant efficiency for grain yield. Material used comprises half sib families from each of the following populations: Composto Dentado Branco, Composto Flint Branco and variety Centralmex. Such progenies were evaluated in yield trials in 10 x 10 lattices with three replications in 1974/75. After the most intense phase of the pollination period, a sample of tassels was collected from each plot and evaluated for the following traits: weight, number of first branches and lenght. At harvest time, data were taken for grain yield. Analysis of variance and covariance were performed and the following parameters were estimated: coefficient of heritability for the individual traits and additive genetic correlation and phenotypic correlation for combinations of the studied traits. Direct and correlated response from selection were calculated using variance and covariance estimates. Estimates of heritability coefficients were of high magnitude, i.e., 36.1%, 45,8% and 28.8% on the average for weight, number of branches and lenght of tassel, respectively. The relatively high values for heritabilities indicate that phenotypic selection can be quite effective for such characters. Estimates of additive genetic correlation showed to be negative for tassel weight and grain yield (rA -0.143) and for number of branches in the tassel and grain yield (rA -0.650). However, estimates of partial additive genetic correlation indicated that number of branches is primarily correlated with grain yield and that the negative correlation between tassel weight and grain yield results from the positive correlation between number of branches and tassel weight (rA = 0.477). Direct and correlated response from selection indicates that selection toward the decrease of number of branches in the tassel probably leads to significant increase in grain yield, Such a selection can be easily and effectively performed in the field because this trait can be evaluated visually without the need of tassel remotion, and also due to its relatively high heritability
