Estimations of Nitrogen Concentration in Sugarcane Using Hyperspectral Imagery

    No full text
This study aims to estimate the spatial variation of sugarcane Canopy Nitrogen Concentration (CNC) using spectral data, which were measured from a spaceborne hyperspectral image. Stepwise Multiple Linear Regression (SMLR) and Support Vector Regression (SVR) were applied to calibrate and validate the CNC estimation models. The raw spectral reflectance was transformed into a First-Derivative Spectrum (FDS) and absorption features to remove the spectral noise and finally used as input variables. The results indicate that the estimation models developed by non-linear SVR based Radial Basis Function (RBF) kernel yield the higher correlation coefficient with CNC compared with the models computed by SMLR. The best model shows the coefficient of determination value of 0.78 and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) value of 0.035% nitrogen. The narrow sensitive spectral wavelengths for quantifying nitrogen content in the combined cultivar environments existed mainly in the electromagnetic spectrum of the visible-red, longer portion of red edge, shortwave infrared regions and far-near infrared. The most important conclusion from this experiment is that spectral signals from the space hyperspectral data contain the meaningful information for quantifying sugarcane CNC across larger geographic areas. The nutrient deficient areas could be corrected by applying suitable farm management

Estimating Canopy Nitrogen Concentration in Sugarcane Using Field Imaging Spectroscopy

The retrieval of nutrient concentration in sugarcane through hyperspectral remote sensing is widely known to be affected by canopy architecture. The goal of this research was to develop an estimation model that could explain the nitrogen variations in sugarcane with combined cultivars. Reflectance spectra were measured over the sugarcane canopy using a field spectroradiometer. The models were calibrated by a vegetation index and multiple linear regression. The original reflectance was transformed into a First-Derivative Spectrum (FDS) and two absorption features. The results indicated that the sensitive spectral wavelengths for quantifying nitrogen content existed mainly in the visible, red edge and far near-infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Normalized Differential Index (NDI) based on FDS(750/700) and Ratio Spectral Index (RVI) based on FDS(724/700) are best suited for characterizing the nitrogen concentration. The modified estimation model, generated by the Stepwise Multiple Linear Regression (SMLR) technique from FDS centered at 410, 426, 720, 754, and 1,216 nm, yielded the highest correlation coefficient value of 0.86 and Root Mean Square Error of the Estimate (RMSE) value of 0.033%N (n = 90) with nitrogen concentration in sugarcane. The results of this research demonstrated that the estimation model developed by SMLR yielded a higher correlation coefficient with nitrogen content than the model computed by narrow vegetation indices. The strong correlation between measured and estimated nitrogen concentration indicated that the methods proposed in this study could be used for the reliable diagnosis of nitrogen quantity in sugarcane. Finally, the success of the field spectroscopy used for estimating the nutrient quality of sugarcane allowed an additional experiment using the polar orbiting hyperspectral data for the timely determination of crop nutrient status in rangelands without any requirement of prior cultivar information

Extraction of Mangrove Biophysical Parameters Using Airborne LiDAR

    No full text
Tree parameter determinations using airborne Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) have been conducted in many forest types, including coniferous, boreal, and deciduous. However, there are only a few scientific articles discussing the application of LiDAR to mangrove biophysical parameter extraction at an individual tree level. The main objective of this study was to investigate the potential of using LiDAR data to estimate the biophysical parameters of mangrove trees at an individual tree scale. The Variable Window Filtering (VWF) and Inverse Watershed Segmentation (IWS) methods were investigated by comparing their performance in individual tree detection and in deriving tree position, crown diameter, and tree height using the LiDAR-derived Canopy Height Model (CHM). The results demonstrated that each method performed well in mangrove forests with a low percentage of crown overlap conditions. The VWF method yielded a slightly higher accuracy for mangrove parameter extractions from LiDAR data compared with the IWS method. This is because the VWF method uses an adaptive circular filtering window size based on an allometric relationship. As a result of the VWF method, the position measurements of individual tree indicated a mean distance error value of 1.10 m. The individual tree detection showed a kappa coefficient of agreement (K) value of 0.78. The estimation of crown diameter produced a coefficient of determination (R2) value of 0.75, a Root Mean Square Error of the Estimate (RMSE) value of 1.65 m, and a Relative Error (RE) value of 19.7%. Tree height determination from LiDAR yielded an R2 value of 0.80, an RMSE value of 1.42 m, and an RE value of 19.2%. However, there are some limitations in the mangrove parameters derived from LiDAR. The results indicated that an increase in the percentage of crown overlap (COL) results in an accuracy decrease of the mangrove parameters extracted from the LiDAR-derived CHM, particularly for crown measurements. In this study, the accuracy of LiDAR-derived biophysical parameters in mangrove forests using the VWF and IWS methods is lower than in coniferous, boreal, pine, and deciduous forests. An adaptive allometric equation that is specific for the level of tree density and percentage of crown overlap is a solution for improving the predictive accuracy of the VWF method

The methodology is divided into five subsections: 1) extracting and bias correcting climatic data in the period of A.D. 2020–2100 from MPI-ESM-MR model under moderate greenhouse gas emissions (RCP4.5) and very high greenhouse gas emissions (RCP8.5). The climatic data are extracted and bias corrected by CMhyd model; 2) estimating the future streamflow under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 using SWAT model; 3) analysis of flood magnitude and frequency using Log Pearson type III distribution of annual maximum streamflow obtained from SWAT model and historical annual maximum streamflow during the period between A.D. 1993–2019. The peak flows were estimated for different return periods such as 25, 50, 100, and 200 years; 4) simulating the hydraulic characteristic s (i.e. flood depth and flood velocity) of each return period using HEC-RAS; and 5) assessment levels of flood prone areas using Flood Hazard Rating (FHR) by ArcGIS. The results indicate that the flood risk areas due to climate change under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 are more likely to increase, and the flood risk areas under RCP8.5 will be higher than RCP4.5 on average approximately 7.44%. This difference value suggests that under RCP8.5 condition, the degree of management should be greater than the one of RCP4.5. The upper and downstream areas are susceptible to high flood risks while the central area is more likely to experience moderate risks under the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 conditions. The rainfall in dry season increased by 9.27% (RCP4.5) and 1.27% (RCP8.5). In rainy season, it was found to increase by 17.42% (RCP4.5) and 21.98% (RCP8.5). The dry season streamflow under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 increased by 8.16% and 4.07%, respectively. In rainy season, runoff increased by 13.43% (RCP4.5) and 18.11% (RCP8.5). The results obtained from this study are particularly useful in providing preliminary information to relevant agencies and people in the community for preparing and dealing with floods events, especially land use management
